Chapter 154 Alice's Gift
Elizabeth remained silent.
"Get in the car!" Alexander commanded in a low voice.
Elizabeth obediently got into the car. Since it was nighttime, Gavin had turned on the heater, in the cramped space of the car, Elizabeth's face quickly turning rosy.
She didn't speak, and neither did Alexander.
Gavin, sitting in the front, was more anxious than Alexander. He glanced at Alexander through the rearview mirror, seeing that Alexander had his eyes closed, resting.
Gavin cleared his throat lightly, saying, "Mrs. Windsor."
Elizabeth looked at Gavin.
"The gentlemen gathering with Mr. Windsor today are his best friends, closer than brothers, even so than Marcus," Gavin said.
Elizabeth couldn't quite grasp the meaning behind Gavin's words.
Six years ago, she was very smart.
Even though she spoke little back then, she could see through many things.
But now, Elizabeth often didn't want to guess.
In the past six years, she had faced life and death several times, With Samuel's legs paralyzed, now he was exiled abroad. She had been captured by Alexander, Alice having fallen into Alexander's hands.
How could she still guess?
Was Alexander good to her?
To be fair, in the past three days, apart from his insatiable demands during sex, he hadn't made her fulfill any other obligations.
For instance, let her accompany some of the guests she mentioned.
Like tonight, not only did Alexander not make her accompany any men, but he also shielded her from Laura's humiliation.
But what did that prove?
Elizabeth couldn't fathom the thoughts of these wealthy people.
Six years ago, Owen was more attentive to her than Alexander is now, but Owen also wanted to toy with her, didn't he?
Elizabeth thought that she just needed to remember one thing: in this high society, she would always be a plaything controlled by others.
Once she understood this, she became even more compliant, saying nothing, just slowly leaning against Alexander's arm.
Alexander didn't object, continuing to rest with his eyes closed.
In fact, he was thinking.
As soon as he entered the nightclub, Alexander received a call from Sierra who said that Marcus wanted to see Alice.
Although the Windsor family once had many family members, now, Alice was the only child left in the youngest generation of the Windsor family.
Now, Marcus was seriously ill in the hospital. He was eager to see Alice upon hearing that Alexander had brought Elizabeth back from a distant place, and that Elizabeth's child indeed bore a strong resemblance to Alexander.
Moreover, he wanted to raise Alice in the Windsor Manor.
This was what Sierra had called Alexander about yesterday. Because Elizabeth was present, Alexander had stepped out to take the call.
At this moment, he was still pondering how to handle this matter.
The car silently arrived at Alexander's residence, Gavin turned around and said, "Mr. Windsor, we're here."
"Okay," Responding lightly, Alexander was about to let Elizabeth get out of the car when he noticed she had fallen asleep. He turned and gently carried Elizabeth out of the car, heading towards his elevator.
Gavin was stunned.
After a while, he muttered to himself, "I really don't know if it's Mrs. Windsor who makes Mr. Windsor sad, or the other way around. Are they in love and hurting each other?"
But it was none of his business.
Elizabeth, being carried into the elevator by Alexander, wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "Actually, this isn't so bad."
Alexander asked, "What?"
Her cheeks being rosy from the lack of ventilation in the car, it felt quite comfortable for her to touch against his cool neck.
He also felt a bit of warmth.
"Actually, you haven't been that bad to me. You haven't made me accompany other men, and you're good to Alice, even letting her go to preschool," she murmured. "I appreciate that."
Remaining silent, Alexander was about to put her down and sternly say, 'You've known me for six years. When have you ever seen me treat a woman this well? Is it wrong to say that it made you foolish to have a child? My own wife and daughter—if I'm not good to you, who should I be good to?'
He thought, 'You two are my wife and daughter. If I'm not good to you, who should I be good to?'
However, before Alexander could say his thoughts, the elevator arrived, with the doors opening instantly.
Standing at the elevator door, outside the apartment, was the small figure of Alice.
Alice widened her eyes, looking at Alexander carrying Elizabeth. She didn't object.
"Is my mom asleep?" Alice asked.
"Put me down, put me down now!" Elizabeth, hearing Alice's voice, immediately blushed even more with embarrassment.
"Mom, you're not asleep?" Alice said, standing on tiptoe to look at Elizabeth in Alexander's arms.
Alexander instantly put Elizabeth down.
"Mom, I had so much fun at preschool today. There are so many fun places, much bigger than my old preschool. But..." Alice's tone turned a bit unhappy.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Elizabeth squatted down to ask.
"It's just that I don't know any of my classmates. I don't have any friends," Alice pouted to say.
"It's okay, Alice. Once you get to know your classmates, you'll make friends," Elizabeth gently comforted Alice.
Alice nodded, saying "Mom, can I bring some treats to preschool tomorrow to share with them? That way, I can introduce myself again."
At four and a half years old, Alice had suddenly entered a new environment where she didn't know any of the children around her, definitely felt a strong sense of loneliness.
Moreover, she really wanted to fit into that environment.
For a child, sharing treats with classmates is the quickest way to make friends.
But even such a small request was hard for Elizabeth to fulfill.
All her money had been confiscated by Alexander to pay off debts, and she was penniless.
Elizabeth felt a pang of sadness, but she continued to gently coax Alice, "Listen, Alice, we can't afford to give gifts to your classmates right now."
Maybe they never would, but Elizabeth couldn't tell Alice that.
Swallowing the strong sense of sorrow, Elizabeth continued, "When we can afford it, I'll buy you lots of gifts to give to your classmates, okay? You don't need to share gifts to introduce yourself and make friends at preschool."
"Mom, are we poor?" Alice, always obedient and understanding, asked.
Elizabeth nodded awkwardly.
"I understand, Mom. I don't need gifts," Alice said, holding Elizabeth's hand. "Mom, don't be sad. I'm not sad at all."
"You can share treats with your classmates," Alexander said calmly from behind.
