Chapter 203 Elizabeth's Reward
As soon as Elizabeth spoke, everyone present was stunned.
A country bumpkin who rarely spoke, had only been on the job for two days, already suspended for a week, claiming she had a way to fix it?
"Elizabeth, don't try to show off just because Linda attacked you. You shouldn't talk nonsense about construction matters!" Even the usually fair Anna was displeased with Elizabeth, scolding.
Elizabeth replied calmly, "I have conditions for solving this problem."
Anna remained silent.
Elizabeth then looked at Linda, saying, "Linda, the contents of your computer and mine can both prove that I haven't touched your drawings at all. So, I'm actually helping you out of a big mess. I want to know, will you personally pay me, or will the company? You guys can discuss it, okay?"
Linda stammered, "You want compensation? How much do you want?"
"One hundred thousand dollars!" Elizabeth said straightforwardly.
Everyone fell silent.
"Are you crazy?" Linda shouted.
"Do you know how much the loss will be if this mistake isn't fixed?" Elizabeth asked.
Linda fell silent, knowing certainly.
If this mistake wasn't fixed, not only would she be fully responsible, but she might also lose her job. And not just her job; it would be nearly impossible for her to work in the architectural design field again.
To be clear, this was her own fault.
Linda had always proofread her own materials, never having any issues. So, she naturally handed over the recent materials to Elizabeth for proofreading.
Maybe because Linda had been annoyed with Elizabeth lately, she handed over some unmodified design drawings to Elizabeth. By the time Elizabeth returned them after proofreading, Linda had forgotten that some of the designs hadn't been modified yet.
With her many years of design experience, Linda thought there wouldn't be any problems. But within a week, issues arose. Many problems Linda could foresee and take preemptive measures to fix. But Linda was just a designer with little on-site experience.
So when problems arose, Linda couldn't find a solution.
But Elizabeth was different.
She had worked hands-on as an engineer on construction sites for many years. During the construction of a building, unexpected issues always arise, as solutions must be found.
The problem Linda faced was a minor one.
"So, tell me, how do we fix it? If you can solve it well, I..." Linda looked back at Anna, saying.
Should she personally fork out one hundred thousand dollars?
She felt a bit pained.
But if the company really held Linda accountable for this mistake, she would have to accept it. The priority now was to keep her job.
Anna, in a very stern tone, said, "Linda! This mistake is your responsibility. Elizabeth's demand is something you must bear yourself. Even so, when you return to the company, you still need to write a report! The company is already being lenient with you. Otherwise, you know the consequences!"
With the legs going weak, Linda said tearfully, "Ms. Morgan, where am I supposed to get one hundred thousand dollars all at once? My boyfriend just broke up with me, and he no longer provides for me. I have to pay for my car loan and mortgage myself. I can't even make ends meet with twenty thousand dollars a month. Where would I have savings?"
Anna glared at Linda.
Thinking about how the entire design department would be implicated if this issue wasn't resolved, Anna sighed heavily, glaring at Linda again, and then saying to Elizabeth, "Elizabeth, I'm sorry for what happened last week. Linda will pay you the one hundred thousand dollars, but she doesn't have the money right now. You need to come back to the company with me. I'll personally speak to the finance department to get you the money. How about that?"
Elizabeth calmly said, "That's fine."
She didn't care.
As long as she got the money properly.
She wasn't unwilling to help for free, it depended on who she was helping.
She had only worked at this company for two days, having been ostracized everywhere. Now that she was fired, she naturally wanted compensation for solving the company's problem.
"Alright, then please come up with a solution," Anna asked.
"Yeah! Now you should tell us how to fix it. Don't tell us you actually have no idea!" Linda said sharply to Elizabeth.
Everyone looked at Elizabeth.
Especially many in the design department, thinking that if Elizabeth couldn't solve it, they would skin her alive!
Elizabeth smiled calmly, "This is very simple. Just replace the hollow bricks with solid ones to increase the load-bearing capacity by half. This way, the mistake on one side will reduce the load by half, solving half the problem. For the other half, just reinforce the mistake side with fixed piles at a ninety-degree angle, and it will be resolved."
This kind of situation usually didn't occur on large construction sites, so the construction personnel there wouldn't think of it. But now that the problem had arisen, this was the only way to fix it. Elizabeth had spent six years in a small town like Collinsport, where there were countless micro and small buildings. To Elizabeth, this wasn't a big deal.
However, if Elizabeth had drawn the design, she would have anticipated and avoided such issues due to her experience.
What was a headache for everyone else was easily solved by Elizabeth, even impressing Anna.
Anna grabbed Elizabeth's hand, thanking her repeatedly, "Elizabeth, I never realized you had such deep expertise in construction. We really underestimated you."
Elizabeth smiled calmly, "It's nothing, really. I just have a lot of practical experience from spending a long time on construction sites. Ms. Morgan, the money..."
"Alright, come with me to the company to get the money," Anna said, already thinking about how to keep Elizabeth at the company.
After solving the problem, they returned to the company. This time, Elizabeth didn't take the bus but rode in Anna's private car.
As soon as they got out of the car at the company entrance, a high-end sports car suddenly stopped in front of Elizabeth.
"Elizabeth, did your design department go out for lunch together?" Robert asked enthusiastically as he got out of the car.
