Chapter 89 Elizabeth Goes Viral
After Samuel and Owen took off, Elizabeth hit the bank first to grab a card and stash the cash. Then she headed to the station to snag a ticket, but the ticket guy told her there were no tickets to her hometown for the next three days.
The earliest bus wouldn't roll out until three days later.
Sure, Elizabeth could catch a bus from Sunwillow City to her hometown, but it'd be a rough ride, taking over a day and costing $400. Plus, it'd be super bumpy.
Elizabeth couldn't deal with the bumps; she had to keep the baby in her belly safe.
After thinking it over for a sec, she told the ticket guy, "Give me a ticket for three days from now."
With the ticket in hand, Elizabeth wandered around a bit. She hadn't had the chance to do that in the two months since she got out of prison.
Mostly because she was broke, and also because she had no time.
After wandering all morning, Elizabeth didn't buy anything for herself. She grabbed a quick lunch and then called Gavin. "Gavin, did Mr. Windsor agree to let me pay my respects to Aunt Esme?"
Gavin's voice was steady on the other end. "Of course he did! Miss Spencer, Mr. Windsor and I have noticed how much you cared for Mrs. Windsor these past two months. You can go pay your respects anytime."
"Okay, thanks, Gavin."
Just as Elizabeth was about to hang up, Gavin called out, "Miss Spencer, wait a sec."
"What's up, Gavin?"
"Miss Spencer, what are your plans next? Do you need…" Gavin was about to ask if Elizabeth needed help finding a job or something.
But before he could finish, Elizabeth cut him off, "No need!"
Elizabeth wanted to cut all ties with Aldoria and not have any more connections with anyone there.
After that, she hung up.
In the afternoon, Elizabeth, dressed in black, showed up at Esme's grave. The photo on the tombstone showed Esme looking kind and gentle, with no hint of sadness.
But Elizabeth knew Esme had a tough life.
"Aunt Esme, please give me strength. From now on, I'll follow your path. I'll raise my child alone and be as strong as you, giving my kid a life without want. Aunt Esme, I'm leaving in three days, and I might not be back for five years. Please don't blame me for not visiting, okay, Aunt Esme?"
The tombstone stayed silent and solemn.
No one answered Elizabeth's words.
Elizabeth pulled out a delicate box from her bag. She opened it to reveal a jade-green bracelet.
Placing the bracelet in front of Esme's tombstone, Elizabeth said calmly, "Aunt Esme, do you remember this bracelet? You put it on me yourself, treating me like your daughter-in-law. But I deceived you. My love for you was real, though. I thought of you as my mother. Even though I can't be your daughter-in-law, I'll always miss you. When my child grows up, I'll come to pay my respects every year. I'll leave this bracelet here with you, as a way of being with you, okay? Please let me call you 'Mom.' Mom, may you not suffer in heaven."
After whispering her goodbyes, Elizabeth gently opened the grave's cover and placed the green bracelet next to Esme's urn.
"Goodbye, Mom," she said softly, then reluctantly left the cemetery.
By the time Elizabeth got back to her place, it was already 4 PM. She thought about grabbing a bite outside to avoid cooking.
As soon as she sat down in a small restaurant, she noticed two women staring at her.
"It's her, definitely her! The background in the photo looks just like around here. It has to be her, no mistake."
"I think so too! Looking at her calm and innocent face, you'd never guess she could seduce men like that."
"I heard both guys are from rich families. One's even the grandson of Marcus, the former head of the Windsor Group."
"The other guy's family might be on the decline, but he's still worth millions. Not someone us regular folks can compare to."
Elizabeth overheard their chat.
They were clearly talking about Owen and Samuel, and the woman they were gossiping about was definitely herself.
Elizabeth quietly walked over to them and asked, "What are you looking at?"
The two women jumped a bit.
One of them, after regaining her composure, said with a mix of envy and jealousy, "I never would've guessed someone from our slum could attract two rich guys. Can you teach us some of your tricks?"
From their looks and talk, the two women seemed like prostitutes. Elizabeth didn't want to engage much; she just wanted to see what they were looking at on their phone.
"Can I see your phone?" Elizabeth's phone was an old model and couldn't download advanced apps.
The two women handed their phone to Elizabeth, who saw a short video app playing a clip.
In the video, Elizabeth was caught between Owen and Samuel, being pulled and tugged like prey. This had happened just this morning. Who had taken this video and uploaded it online?
Elizabeth had no idea.
She only heard one of the women say, "Your video is getting a lot of views and comments, but none of them are good. You might not want to look."
The other woman quickly added, "So what if they are not good? She used her skills to get those men. Who cares what people say? Those comments calling her a slut or a prostitute willing to sacrifice her body are just jealousy! Pure jealousy! They want to climb the social ladder but don't have the skills to seduce even one man, let alone two!"
Elizabeth stayed silent.
She didn't need to read the comments to know what they were like.
But she didn't want to know. Knowing would only add to her mental burden, and she was powerless to change it. She was innocent and had nothing to fear!
Besides, Elizabeth would be leaving Aldoria in three days.
Why should she care about these online videos and comments?
Elizabeth calmly finished her dinner and headed back to her place. People talked about her behind her back, but she pretended not to hear.
Back at her place, Elizabeth closed the door and was about to wash up and go to bed when her phone rang. It was Alexander calling.
She hesitated for a moment and then answered, "Hello?"
