Chapter 33 Whose Child Are You Carrying?
The Guise family, hiding in the distance, was paralyzed with fear.
Meanwhile, Alexander had already followed the doctor into the emergency room. Inside, the unconscious Elizabeth lay with her eyes tightly shut, her brows furrowed, and her thick, curled eyelashes were wet with tears. Her once beautiful eyelashes now drooped lifelessly.
Her face, smaller than his palm, was flushed red from the fever.
Alexander approached Elizabeth, who was still muttering deliriously, "Baby, don't leave me, please... don't leave me. I have no family left. I'm so lonely. I need someone to stay with me to survive."
Her tone was so pitiful and sorrowful that even the doctor administering emergency care couldn't help but shed tears.
Alexander watched everything with a cold expression and asked in a deep voice, "Besides using a large dose of antipyretics, is constant tepid-sponging the only option?"
"Yes." the doctor nodded.
"Then, let's do tepid-sponging on her!" Alexander gave an order and started working with the doctor.
This physical means of cooling the body was much better than before, but it still required the accompanying doctors and Alexander to endure the laborious task together. They moved Elizabeth to a more conducive space, and then all the male doctors left the room, leaving only female doctors and Alexander in the emergency room.
One of the female doctors looked at Alexander, signaling him to leave.
Alexander responded, "I'm her husband!"
The female doctor remained silent.
Before she could say anything, Alexander had already started to unbutton Elizabeth's clothes. Some of the female doctors took wet towels, while others took cotton balls, and began to wipe Elizabeth's heat-dissipating areas repeatedly.
After more than an hour, Elizabeth's temperature began to slowly drop.
The doctor then administered some medication that wouldn't harm the fetus. After another hour, Elizabeth's temperature returned to normal, and she was moved from the emergency room to a regular ward.
Elizabeth woke up around noon.
During this time, Alexander had not left the ward.
His assistant, Gavin, came once. He quickly reported some company matters to Alexander and then left in a hurry.
After Gavin left, Alexander's phone kept ringing.
He answered each call one by one.
Alexander instructed, "Just give the order for this matter!"
He commanded sternly, "No room for negotiation. If they don't agree, take over their entire company!"
He responded harshly, "Now they want to beg for mercy? What were they doing earlier? Pack them into containers and send them to the harshest, hottest place abroad for ten years of hard labor!"
Alexander scolded, "Don't call me again for such matters next time!"
Elizabeth was awakened by Alexander's phone calls. She still kept her eyes closed, her face ashen.
She knew her child was still alive.
The high fever hadn't caused her to fall into a deep coma. In her daze, she seemed to hear that due to the child in her womb, they had used alternative physical methods of cooling on her body. In her semi-conscious state, she constantly felt gentle hands wiping her underarms, the insides of her thighs, and the back of her neck to cool her down.
Until her fever subsided.
Elizabeth didn't need to guess to understand why Alexander had saved her. It was simply because she still had some use for Esme.
Thinking about how his large hands had touched her entire body, Elizabeth felt a sense of helpless shame.
She felt like a fish out of water in this city, unknowingly caught in the whirlpool of these wealthy men.
Alexander wielded immense power over her life or death.
Owen was a frivolous rich man who approached her merely for novelty.
And then there was Simon, whom she had only met once.
They were all wealthy and powerful, while she was just a joke in their eyes, a poor source of amusement.
Even though her fever had subsided and she had woken up, Elizabeth knew she still had no way to survive on her own.
Elizabeth had originally thought about returning to Alexander's place and confessing everything to him. She had been framed by someone from the Guise family in order to be imprisoned in their stead, forced to have sex with a dying man, and then got pregnant. The man had died afterward.
But when she saw Clara clinging to Alexander that morning, Elizabeth held her tongue.
She knew that with Clara's relationship with Alexander, she couldn't say anything.
If she did, she would only put herself at risk.
From above, Alexander's cold voice came, "If you're awake, open your eyes. I have something to ask you!"
Elizabeth wearily opened her eyes and met Alexander's cold, knife-like gaze. That gaze was not only cold but also filled with disdain.
Recently, his attitude towards her had improved a lot.
Alexander had lent her fifty thousand dollars, personally rescued her from the kidnappers, carried her home, and even applied medicine to her entire body.
However, at this moment, Elizabeth saw the same look in Alexander's eyes as when she first met him after getting out of prison.
His attitude towards her had reverted to how it was in the past.
In fact, his attitude had nothing to do with her!
Elizabeth let out a cold laugh and looked at Alexander with equally cold and unfeeling eyes. She said nonchalantly, "Mr. Windsor, let's talk things over again."
Alexander was silent, surprised by her attitude.
Elizabeth slowly sat up from the bed and looked at Alexander coldly. "That's right! From the beginning, I approached your mother with a plan. I wanted to marry you! I wanted to enjoy a lifetime of wealth and luxury. I knew you wouldn't love me, so I got pregnant in advance, waiting for the right time to announce it. That way, my plan would succeed!" she lied with a straight face.
"You!" Alexander clenched his fists, and Elizabeth could clearly hear the sound of his knuckles. Then, Alexander grabbed Elizabeth by the neck, and remarked, "You really don't want to live!"
Elizabeth smiled as if relieved, and taunted him, "So, kill me. Mr. Windsor."
Alexander remained silent.
"If you're not going to kill me, then let go of my neck." Elizabeth looked at Alexander with cold eyes as she spoke, "I know my life is like an bug in your hands; you can crush me anytime. But don't I still have some use for your mother?"
"If you strangle me now, your mother might not live past tomorrow. Not only that, but she would also die with regret, wouldn't she?" Elizabeth remarked as she looked at Alexander with a resigned expression.
Alexander gritted his teeth and looked at her. "Are you telling the truth now?" he questioned her.
"Yes!" Elizabeth insisted.
"Clara told me about your past misdeeds. She wasn't lying?" Alexander pressed with doubt.
Elizabeth swallowed, holding back her tears, and said with a cold smile, "She's your fiancée. Haven't you already believed her?"
"Who is the man?" Alexander asked again.
"Which man?" Elizabeth didn't understand who Alexander was referring to.
Alexander glanced at Elizabeth's belly. "Whose child are you carrying?" he clarified,
