Chapter 97 Revealing the Truth

Elizabeth's face went pale in an instant. Sitting there, she felt like the room was spinning. "You... what did you just say?" she stuttered.

"I said, today's my wedding day, and I'm marrying the most powerful man in Sunwillow City, Alexander. Oh, and by the way, he's the father of the baby you're carrying," Clara said with a grin.

She said it like she genuinely thought Elizabeth was her bestie.

Elizabeth just stared at Clara, completely floored. "How is this even possible? Wasn't that guy dead?" she mumbled to herself.

Dead, right?

Elizabeth had always avoided talking about him because she thought he was dead. Every time she thought about it, it felt like her life was just one big tragedy.

She had given herself to a man who was supposed to die.

And now she was pregnant with his kid.

She didn't even know what he looked like, whether he was old or young; she knew nothing at all.

The only thing that gave Elizabeth any comfort was the baby growing inside her. She didn't care if people called the baby illegitimate.

To her, the baby was a precious gift from God.

Elizabeth had no other family in this world. The baby was her only hope. That was why she wanted to move to a big city, so her child wouldn't be ridiculed.

But now, to her utter shock, that man was alive. And it was Alexander? She could hardly believe it.

"Why not?" Clara said, looking at Elizabeth, who was pale and completely stunned.

This was exactly what Clara wanted.

She wanted Elizabeth to be shocked! She wanted her to feel like her life was falling apart!

Even though Elizabeth now knew the truth, it didn't matter. The things she had said at Windsor Manor had already hurt Alexander. If Elizabeth went back to him now, everyone in high society would know she had gone back on her word!

Elizabeth would only embarrass herself.

How hilarious!

Clara was thrilled.

Elizabeth looked at Clara, her face as white as a sheet. "Clara, this joke isn't funny. You're getting married, and I don't want to stand in the way. I can't stop it even if I wanted to, but this joke isn't funny. I'm sorry, I'm leaving this city. I don't want to hear any more of this," she said.

Elizabeth's lips were white.

She tried to stand up, but she was too weak. Clara saw this and raised an eyebrow with a smile. "Elizabeth, you've lived in my house for eight years. My parents treated you like a daughter, and I treated you like a sister. Now that I'm telling you the truth, you think I'm joking? Today is my wedding day. Do I look like I have time to joke with you?"

Elizabeth just sat there, speechless. She knew Clara wasn't messing around.

She just couldn't wrap her head around the truth.

Clara pulled out her phone, opened a video, and handed it to Elizabeth. "Take a look at this."

Elizabeth's eyes drifted to the screen, and when she saw what was on it, her eyes went wide with shock.

The video showed the address of that old, rundown villa she had visited three months ago.

She recognized it right away.

The camera slowly panned inside, into a dimly lit room. Elizabeth saw the room she had been in.

But this time, it wasn't pitch black; there was a dim yellow light.

Under the light sat a thin, bearded man.

As the camera zoomed in on his face, Elizabeth saw clearly—it was Alexander!

It really was him!

Tears started streaming down Elizabeth's face. He had actually been in such a desperate situation?

"See? I wasn't lying, was I? That man is my husband, Alexander. This video was taken half a month before you spent that night with him. My dad filmed Alexander to report his whereabouts to his brother, Brent Windsor. I didn't expect that keeping this video would come in handy today. Do you believe me now?" Clara said, her smile smug and relaxed.

She wanted to see Elizabeth shocked, crazy, helpless, and then lose it completely.

Sure enough, Elizabeth suddenly stood up, screaming hysterically. "Tell me! What is going on? Tell me!"

Elizabeth was falling apart.

"Sit down! Calm down, or the police will come for you. Got it?" Clara signaled to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth forced herself to sit down, tears streaming down her face. She tried to control her expressions but still trembled as she looked at Clara.

Clara blew on her nails and said slowly, "Half a year ago, everyone in Sunwillow City knew Alexander was just an illegitimate child of the Windsor family. He didn't even have inheritance rights. But Alexander's influence in Sunwillow City was huge. Even though he couldn't inherit the Windsor family's assets, he built his own empire. The real heir, Brent, wanted to get rid of Alexander, so he conspired to imprison him."

Clara continued, "Elizabeth, you should know Brent and Alexander have never gotten along. They've been at each other's throats for over a decade. Esme was also imprisoned by Brent and the Windsor family. Brent thought he had everything under control. Most of the high society in Sunwillow City sided with him, with only a third staying neutral. Everyone thought Brent would win. But among these people, there was one very clever person who didn't stay neutral or take sides. This person openly followed Brent but secretly helped Alexander. Guess who this clever person is?"

Elizabeth had already guessed. In a desperate tone, she asked, "This person is Oliver?"

"Correct!" Clara laughed.
