Chapter 76 I'm Pregnant
In the drizzle, Elizabeth knelt by Esme's grave, holding a black umbrella. A bunch of white and yellow flowers lay in front of the tombstone.
Tears streaming down her face, Elizabeth spoke softly, "Aunt Esme, I'm sorry I missed your memorial. I know life was tough for you, but now you can finally rest, buried with your parents and sister. In another world, you won't be lonely anymore."
"Aunt Esme, I miss you so much. After Mom died, you were my last family, and now you're gone too."
Elizabeth's sobs were so quiet that Alexander and Gavin, who were approaching, didn't hear her. But she heard their footsteps. She turned and saw Alexander's stern face and Gavin's unreadable expression.
Gavin looked stunned, like he wanted to say something but couldn't find the words.
Elizabeth felt a bit awkward.
She stood up, brushed her rain-soaked hair from her forehead, and softly said to Alexander, "I'm sorry, Mr. Windsor. I came to Aunt Esme's grave without your permission. I didn't mean any harm; I just wanted to visit her and bring some flowers. I'll leave now."
No matter how close she was to Esme, Alexander was Esme's son, and since he didn't want to see her, she had to go.
Elizabeth turned to leave. After taking a couple of steps, she turned back and said firmly to Alexander's back, "Mr. Windsor, now that Aunt Esme has passed, let's finalize our divorce as soon as possible. As for the payment promised to me in our contract, I don't want it anymore!"
Not wanting the money?
This statement shocked both Alexander and Gavin.
They turned simultaneously to look at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth's expression remained cold as usual. She said, "You never believed anything I said before. You always thought I had ulterior motives for getting close to Aunt Esme. I've never been able to prove myself."
"I pretended to be an external server at The Windsor Manor's family banquet because Aunt Esme's lifelong wish was to be acknowledged by the Windsor family. When she heard about the family banquet, she wanted to attend but couldn't because she was bedridden. Even if she weren't, the head of the Windsor family wouldn't have let her in. So Aunt Esme asked me to take pictures at The Windsor Manor for her."
"That's the real reason I went to The Windsor Manor. Also, I am greedy. I had just gotten out of prison with no job or savings. I signed a contract with you to take care of Aunt Esme, and you promised to pay me only after the contract ended. I was always short on money, so I borrowed from everywhere, including you. I asked about the contract because I needed the money; I was pregnant and needed to support my child."
"Mr. Windsor, I've explained everything I can. But I don't need that money anymore. I just want you to know that I took care of Aunt Esme for over a month not for the money but because I genuinely saw her as family. I don't want to taint my feelings for Aunt Esme with money. How you view me is your business. I know you're powerful enough to end someone's life at will. If you want to kill me, you can do it anytime. I won't resist. At least then, I can join my mom and Aunt Esme."
Alexander stood there, silent.
He had no idea what to say.
Elizabeth was usually a woman of few words. He'd only seen her talkative twice; once when he treated her well, buying her clothes and a computer, and now.
Her resolute words left him speechless.
"If you don't want my life for now, I'll leave. You can find me anytime if you change your mind." Elizabeth didn't look at Alexander again and walked down the steps.
She never looked back.
"Elizabeth," Gavin called out, unable to help himself.
Elizabeth kept walking.
She held her umbrella, her steps steady, but Alexander's long strides quickly caught up to her.
"Are you here to take my life now?" Elizabeth asked.
Alexander, expressionless, said, "A contract I signed can't be voided. You'll get every dollar you're owed! And your life isn't worth a dime to me! Taking it would be too much trouble!"
Elizabeth suddenly felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
He was still willing to give her the money and let her live. She was grateful for that.
Looking up, Elizabeth smiled slightly and said, "Really, Mr. Windsor, I don't need the money. Taking it would insult my relationship with Aunt Esme. Besides, I want to..."
She stopped mid-sentence.
Lowering her eyes, she said, "I just want us to finalize the divorce as soon as possible."
With that, Elizabeth left.
She wouldn't take Alexander's money.
Because she had decided to start a relationship with Owen.
When Wesley kidnapped her, Owen saved her. When Wesley cornered her for compensation, Owen helped her out.
Owen might be carefree and not serious about her, but in her darkest times, he was the only one who reached out to her.
Owen gave her a stable job, lent her money for living expenses, and helped her with so many things. Elizabeth had made up her mind to be with Owen.
Whether Owen saw her as a one-night stand, a lowly woman, or a temporary fling, Elizabeth didn't care.
She just wanted to be honest and sincere in her relationship with Owen.
After leaving Esme's grave, Elizabeth took a car to the room where she had arranged to meet Owen.
Owen had made her coffee.
Elizabeth just gave a slight smile, shook her head, and said, "Mr. Tudor, I don't drink coffee."
"Elizabeth, you haven't tried it yet, have you? Coffee may be bitter, but it has a rich aftertaste. The more you savor it, the better it tastes. I guarantee you'll want more after this." Owen pushed the coffee closer to Elizabeth.
Since Elizabeth had fiercely injured Wesley, causing him severe and permanent damage, Owen had seen her in a new light.
He was now very attentive to Elizabeth.
If it weren't for Esme's funeral, Owen would have already won Elizabeth over by now.
At this moment, he was almost impatient with anticipation.
But Elizabeth calmly said, "Mr. Tudor, I'm pregnant."
