Chapter 16 The Surprise from Esme
Elizabeth stood before him, having changed out of her tattered skirt and white shirt into a wedding gown and crystal high heels.
These crystal high-heels, made her appear even taller, and accentuated her exceptional long legs.
Elizabeth had just changed her clothes and hadn't put on any makeup yet.
But even without makeup, her natural beauty was enough to leave Alexander stunned.
She had an unintentional coldness, as if nothing in the world concerned her. Wearing this exquisitely crafted wedding dress made her beauty seem even more effortless and unrestrained.
She looked at him innocently and coldly, without saying a word.
A sudden, inexplicable anger surged within Alexander.
His voice was cold and slightly hoarse, "What were you doing this morning? Do you know you almost delayed my important event?"
"Is it our wedding you're talking about?" Elizabeth asked with clarity.
After asking, she continued, "I don't need this wedding! You shouldn't need it either. After all, you're going to marry Clara in two months. By holding a wedding with me in front of the Guise family, they'll see me as a mortal enemy!"
Alexander grabbed Elizabeth's chin, and said, "Listen, whether you owe the Guise family or they owe you, whatever complicated relationship you have, I don't care."
He added, "And Owen! Today was supposed to be our wedding day, yet you came out of Owen's car in disheveled clothes. It seems your past is as messy as a stain!"As Alexander said these words, he felt a strange irritation and anger.
He clearly saw her get out of Owen's car. At that time, he was in his car, on the phone with the hospital, trying to delay Esme's arrival by an hour.
Just after he hung up, Alexander saw Owen get out of the car, too.
In front of so many people, Owen held Elizabeth in his arms, and she seemed to enjoy leaning on Owen's shoulder.
She was truly shameless!
"Mr. Windsor!" she called out to him. Elizabeth's chin hurt from the tightness of his grip.
But she gritted her teeth and didn't cry out in pain. She said calmly, "Between you and me, it's just a two-month contract. When you discussed the wedding with the Guise family in front of me, I didn't interfere. I hope you won't interfere with my personal relationships either."
Alexander laughed coldly and thought, 'You were quite bold. You were actually bargaining with me.'
"Do you think you have any say here?" Alexander asked with a sneer.
Elizabeth replied, "Why not? We're in a partnership. Why shouldn't I have a say?"
"Because I'm the one paying you, and you're the one serving me. You obviously have no say in this! Since you signed the contract, you'll have to marry me honestly, be Mrs. Windsor, and take care of Esme diligently! If I find out about any of your dirty deeds during our marriage, you'll be left with nothing!" Alexander's tone was very calm.
It was almost impossible to discern his emotions.
But Elizabeth knew that Alexander was indeed a ruthless, wealthy, and powerful man.
Otherwise, the Guise family wouldn't fear him so much, acting like slaves in front of him, and Clara wouldn't be so eager to marry him.
Elizabeth bit her lip and softened her tone. "I went to apply for a job at a construction site today. Mr. Tudor is the son of the real estate company owner of that site. When you called me over urgently, I couldn't wait for the bus, so Mr. Tudor offered to drive me here. That's all there is between us."
"What job did you apply for?" Alexander asked doubtfully.
"Bricklaying," Elizabeth said with a hint of melancholy.
She had painstakingly hand-drawn design and construction plans, so perfect and detailed. But because she couldn't provide a degree, the recruiters were reluctant to hire her, wanting her to be an anonymous designer instead.
That meant she wouldn't sign her name on the designs, providing drafts for accomplished designers who would take all the credit.
No matter how well Elizabeth drew, she would be nothing.
Moreover, from Owen's words, Elizabeth learned that a large part of her future work might involve menial tasks at the construction site.
"You went to lay bricks?" Alexander asked in surprise.
"Is Mr. Windsor going to restrict my job too?" Elizabeth asked with a cold laugh.
Alexander's anger had mostly dissipated. He let go of Elizabeth and instructed the makeup artist, "Do her makeup. I'll wait outside."
"Yes, Mr. Windsor," the makeup artist responded, then took Elizabeth to an inner room with a vanity table filled with various makeup and skincare products.
Half an hour later, Elizabeth's makeup was done.
After the makeup artist put on her veil, Elizabeth walked out of the makeup room. Alexander, who was waiting outside, was once again stunned when he saw her emerge from the room.
He had to admit, Elizabeth was very beautiful.
Her natural look had an unintentional, cold innocence, while her made-up look had a high, cold elegance, making her beauty very distinctive.
If Clara, in her wedding dress and heavy makeup, stood in front of Elizabeth at this moment, Clara would undoubtedly be overshadowed by Elizabeth.
After a few seconds of being stunned, Alexander raised his arm and ordered, "Take my arm."
Elizabeth remained silent.
Except for the first day she moved into his place, when they collided in the bathroom, and just now when he forcibly grabbed her wrist and pulled her in. She hadn't had any close contact with him, let alone taken his arm.
They were as awkward as strangers interacting for the first time could be.
Hesitating, Alexander grabbed Elizabeth's arm and forcefully placed it in his.
Elizabeth suddenly felt a sense of disorientation.
She remembered the man in the dark who was about to die. That man had a strong grip and very domineering actions. After being satisfied, he made her turn her back to him, her body enveloped in his embrace.
Elizabeth had no strength to resist and couldn't see him. She only remembered that her arm was lifted in the same forceful way, just like Alexander was doing now.
In Elizabeth's shock, Alexander was already leading her towards the dining hall.
Elizabeth sensed that he wanted her to go with him to meet someone.
As soon as they stood at the entrance of the dining hall, they saw someone pushing a wheelchair towards them. Elizabeth looked closely and saw that it was indeed Esme sitting in the wheelchair.
Esme looked at Elizabeth kindly and asked, "Elizabeth, do you like the surprise I prepared for you?"
