Chapter 50 In a Great Mood
Owen's strong arms lifted her down and set her on the ground, a wicked smile still on his face. He taunted, "Just because I said you wanted to mess around with Mr. Jones at the cruise party, and I didn't heroically save you, you hate me now?"
Elizabeth replied, "I don't."
She really didn't.
What kind of relationship did she have with Owen anyway?
Why would she hate Owen? Elizabeth was someone who could see through everything clearly.
"Elizabeth! Let me tell you, the way you were so focused on money that day, letting others take advantage of you, no one could save you. If I saved you, I'd be making enemies with all the elites of Sunwillow City. Besides Alexander, no one could save you. And anyway, it was just a game. Since you agreed to Elodie, and Elodie paid you. You have no reason to feel wronged," Owen said mercilessly.
Elizabeth, in a calm tone again, insisted, "Mr. Tudor, I really don't hate you."
"Then why did you carry such a big bag, wobbling as you walked, unable to get on the bus, and not call me to give you a ride?" Owen retorted.
Elizabeth was silent.
"Didn't I tell you to come to me if you ever needed anything?" Owen's tone was domineering.
Elizabeth lowered her head.
She didn't know what to say. With her limited eloquence, she couldn't argue with Owen, nor did she want to engage in his sophistry. Owen's sophistry was merely for his own amusement and momentary whims.
And she just needed to remember that Owen had helped her before.
"Get in the car!" Owen commanded domineeringly.
"Okay." Elizabeth obediently got into Owen's car.
The car drove towards the construction site in the south of the city. Along the way, Owen kept howling one song after another like a wolf, not talking to Elizabeth. He occasionally glanced at Elizabeth through the rearview mirror.
Each time, Elizabeth would give him a slight smile.
Owen also smiled subtly, thinking to himself: 'Elizabeth finally knows how to smile. That's progress.'
He was determined to make Elizabeth like him!
The harder it was to make Elizabeth like him, the more interesting it was for him.
When they arrived at the construction site, Owen made a U-turn and drove away. Elizabeth, carrying the big bag of samples, distributed them to the workers in each building. By the time she finished, it was already past one in the afternoon.
Elizabeth glanced at the construction site cafeteria. Most of the workers had already eaten, so she bought a meal and sat by the newly built park outside the construction team department to eat her lunch.
The portions at the construction site were large, and the food was good.
For only five dollars, you get a big meal. Especially since it included a potato.
The potato was a bit sweet and very soft, which Elizabeth loved. There were still plenty of such potatoes left in the cafeteria, and when Elizabeth bought her meal, the staff gave her extra. Now, sitting on the flower bed eating the potato, Elizabeth found it quite delicious.
There were some potato skins, which she carefully picked out. Even if there was a bit of potato on the skin, she didn't waste it and ate it all.
"Is it so delicious?" Owen suddenly sat beside her and asked.
Elizabeth was startled. "Didn't you already leave?" she asked.
He was too carefree. After dropping Elizabeth off, he drove away without a word. Elizabeth was used to his behavior and didn't mind.
But she didn't expect he was still around.
"I brought you here, so I have to take you back. Where would I go if you haven't left yet? Do you expect me to to be like you, with a head full of construction dust, running around this half-finished building delivering samples? You must be kidding!" Owen asked with a smirk.
Elizabeth didn't respond, just continued eating her food.
She hadn't finished separating the potato skins, so she continued picking at it.
"You love potatoes that much?" Owen asked.
"Yes, because they're a bit sweet," Elizabeth said.
"Sweet? It's not chocolate! Give it to me, let me taste it. If I find out you're lying, I won't let you off!"
Owen snatched the lunchbox from Elizabeth's hands, took her utensils, and without caring that they were outside and it was dusty, he picked up a piece of potato and stuffed it into his mouth.
Elizabeth was silent with disbelief.
She stared blankly at Owen.
Owen ate one piece, then another. After finishing, he paused for a moment. "Fuck, I didn't expect the food at the construction site to be this good, and the potatoes to be this delicious."
His expression was exaggerated and crude.
However, Elizabeth laughed.
She laughed sweetly, a genuine smile from the heart.
Owen was suddenly stunned, his eyebrows slightly furrowed.
He had never seen Elizabeth genuinely smile. The most he had seen was her indifferent, cold expression. Even when she occasionally smiled, it was just a polite, shallow smile.
But this time was different.
This time, Elizabeth smiled genuinely, a smile that seemed like...
Owen was caught in a daze, thinking of the sound of a bubbling spring.
Elizabeth's sweet smile was like the sound of a clear mountain stream.
Crisp and clean, with a touch of childlike innocence.
Owen suddenly remembered she had just turned twenty, four years younger than him.
That afternoon, Elizabeth didn't return to the company. Since Owen had eaten her food, he took her to a restaurant and ordered a table full of delicious dishes. She didn't eat much, just quietly and gracefully listened to Owen's nonsense.
Even when Owen spoke crudely, cursed, and said reckless things, Elizabeth didn't mind any of it.
She still listened.
At five in the afternoon, Owen dropped Elizabeth off at the hospital where Esme was, then drove away. Owen wanted to win over Elizabeth, but he didn't dare to mess with her in front of Alexander.
Elizabeth walked into the ward alone and saw Alexander there, feeding Esme freshly cooked porridge.
She suggested kindly, "Alexander, how come you're here earlier than me today? Let me feed Mom." From morning till now, Elizabeth had been in a good mood all day.
Alexander handed the utensils to Elizabeth, and she fed Esme spoonfuls of porridge. With each bite, Esme cheerfully said, "How great would it be if I could live longer?"
"Mom, you'll live to be a hundred," Elizabeth said as she fed Esme another spoonful. "But you have to eat more. Only by eating more can you get stronger, and getting stronger means you'll be living a long life."
Esme repleid, "I'll listen to you, I'll eat more." Knowing her time was limited, Esme was still very happy.
Alexander, standing by, said, "After Mom finishes eating, I'll take you to buy some new clothes."
"What?" Elizabeth looked at Alexander with a surprised expression.
