Chapter 20 Telling Elizabeth the Truth
"Listen!" Alexander's deep, cold voice said, "If you break into my room again, you will die!"
Elizabeth, like a lost deer, fluttered her long, curly eyelashes anxiously and nodded frantically.
Alexander turned and picked up the bracelet from the nightstand, then carried Elizabeth out of the room and into her own bedroom. He put the bracelet back on her wrist. He said to her, "Wear this when you visit my mother tomorrow; it will make her happier."
"I understand," her small, weak voice caught in her throat as she answered him, trembling.
Alexander turned and left.
Only then did Elizabeth quickly close the door, leaning against it as her legs gave out. She collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath.
She felt as if she had just narrowly escaped death.
Luckily, it was just a false alarm.
Elizabeth calmed herself for a while before taking off her wedding dress and crystal shoes. She washed up briefly and went to bed.
Tomorrow was her first day at work, and she needed to be in good condition.
The next day, Elizabeth got up early and went to visit Esme in the hospital. She made sure to show off the bracelet, her face tinged with a bit of shyness.
Esme was indeed pleased to see it.
After chatting for a while, Elizabeth said, "Mom, I have to go to work today, so I can't stay with you for long. Don't worry, I'll come back to see you tonight."
"Elizabeth, it's only your second day of marriage. Why are you going to work?" Esme asked, puzzled.
Elizabeth replied happily, "Mom! You surprised me with the wedding without any notice. Now it's my turn to surprise you. I just found a job I love in architectural design. You know it's my dream."
"Alright, I'm happy you found a job you love. Go to work, but remember to come back and chat with me after work," Esme said lovingly.
Elizabeth successfully arrived at her new company.
As Owen had told her yesterday, the head of the design department sent her to a construction site on the south side of Sunwillow City to get acclimated. In reality, she was just doing odd jobs there.
But Elizabeth was still happy and contented with it.
She was earning her salary as an assistant designer, which was much higher than the workers on the site. As long as she worked there for a month, she could get paid, have her second prenatal checkup, and buy a ticket to go back home to investigate her mother's death.
So, she didn't mind how hard the work was.
For three consecutive days, Elizabeth did odd jobs at the construction site.
Every morning, she visited Esme, did physical labor during the day, and went back to see Esme after work. After three days of rigorous activities, she was so exhausted that she didn't even want dinner and fell asleep the moment she lay down.
The next morning, she woke up nearly an hour later than the previous day. Elizabeth quickly got up, brushed her teeth, washed her face, and ran to catch the bus. She barely spoke to Esme at the hospital before heading to the construction site.
To avoid being late and to make a good first impression on her boss, Elizabeth ran to the site after getting off the bus.
As she neared the site, she bumped into a stranger.
"Sorry. I'm in a hurry," Elizabeth apologized hastily and left quickly.
The man she bumped into was Peter.
Peter watched Elizabeth's retreating figure with a sinister smile. He muttered to himself, "What a coincidence! I've been looking for you for days, and here you are!"
Peter followed Elizabeth and watched her as she started working at the site. He then called Clara, "Miss Guise, I've found the person you want to kill. Guess what she's doing? She's working as a construction laborer, doing men's work! Are you sure she's the one trying to steal your husband?"
Clara laughed coldly. Then she replied, "Elizabeth working as a laborer? That's hilarious! She does want to steal my husband and ruin my happiness, but how could my fiancé ever be interested in her?"
"Do you still want her dead?" Peter asked.
"Of course! I don't just want her dead; I want her to suffer cruelly. Didn't you say you could let me watch you torture her?" Clara asked, humming a cheerful tune.
"As long as you pay me, you can decide how to torture her!" Peter said.
"That's perfect!" Clara was extremely pleased.
Since Elizabeth was just a doormat Alexander used to comfort his mother, Clara's desire to tell Elizabeth the truth before she died grew even stronger.
She couldn't wait to see Elizabeth's shocked, angry, pained, and helpless expression.
Elizabeth was kidnapped by a van without a license plate while waiting for the bus after work. The van took her to an abandoned warehouse before someone removed her hood.
Elizabeth was terrified.
The nightmare she had in Alexander's bedroom a few days ago had come true; she had really been kidnapped by a gang of thugs.
The leader, a man with dark, rough skin, clearly a criminal, snatched the bracelet from Elizabeth's wrist. He then told his men, "Don't touch her!"
"Peter, she's going to die anyway. Let us have some fun first," one of the men said lewdly.
Hearing this, Elizabeth closed her eyes in despair, tears streaming down her face.
"You'll get your turn, but she's our merchandise for now. Wait until Miss Guise arrives and watches, then you can have your fun. If anyone dares to touch her now, I will beat him!" Peter ordered.
"Yes, Peter!" they replied in unison. No one dared to disobey him.
Peter then left to find out the bracelet's value. He soon learned it was worth millions of dollars.
A jewelry store that didn‘t even ask him where the bracelet came from and just paid for it with cash.
To avoid complications, Peter sold the bracelet immediately.
However, Peter didn't know that the jewelry store had contacted Alexander as soon as he left, "Mr. Windsor, the bracelet has appeared. And we've placed a tracker on the seller. Following him should lead us to Miss Spencer."
"Keep a close watch! I'm on my way!" Alexander ordered coldly over the phone.
This time, he was determined to tear Elizabeth to pieces!
Alexander, along with Gavin and some of his most trusted men, tracked Peter to the abandoned warehouse. They surrounded the warehouse and entered silently.
Inside, Clara was glaring at a pregnancy test result that was found in Elizabeth's bag. After reading it, she slapped Elizabeth hard, and cursed, "Damn it! You're pregnant! Elizabeth, you deserve to die!"
.
Elizabeth was tied to a concrete pillar, tears of utter despair streaming down her pale face. She retorted, "Thanks to your Guise family, I'm pregnant."
Clara suddenly laughed maniacally. Then she asked, "Elizabeth, let me tell you whose child you're carrying. Want to guess first?"
