Chapter 12 A New Opportunity
Upon hearing the news, Elizabeth's heart suddenly ached.
Clearly, she and Alexander were married, yet they were like strangers.
And the person Alexander was getting engaged to was none other than Elizabeth's enemy, Clara.
Yes!
Clara was her enemy, her archnemesis to be precise!
Now, Elizabeth still didn't know the cause of her mother's death. She wanted to have it investigated, but she didn't even have the fare to go home, and she was pregnant.
She couldn't do anything now. She could only endure what was happening.
Lila rushed up to Oliver, excitedly grabbing his hand. She asked, "Oliver, is it true? Is Mr. Windsor really going to have an engagement party with Clara? Aren't they supposed to meet each other's parents first? Does Alexander's grandfather and father both accept Clara and not mind that she's adopted?"
Hearing the word "adopted," Elizabeth felt even more bitter.
She and Clara were both raised in The Guise Mansion.
Clara was adopted at the age of two and was treated preciously by Oliver and Lila as soon as she entered The Guise Mansion. But Elizabeth, who was fostered there at the age of twelve, lived a life worse than a dog for eight years.
Elizabeth couldn't help but lament, 'Why is Clara's fate so good?'
Elizabeth walked out sadly.
"Stop!" Lila demanded as she blocked Elizabeth's way. "Five hundred thousand dollars!"
"What did you say?" Oliver questioned as he looked at Lila in astonishment.
"We raised her for eight years, fed her, clothed her, and sent her to college. We even paid for her sick mother’s treatment. Do you think that money just came out of nowhere?" Lila responded while she glared at Oliver fiercely.
Oliver retorted, "Lila! Don't forget..."
"Forget what? Don't forget that her last name is Spencer, not Guise!" Lila interrupted Oliver.
Oliver immediately fell silent.
Elizabeth looked at the couple acting in concert and felt utterly disgusted. She said calmly, "I've already given you fifty thousand dollars! If you dare to dig up my mother's grave again, I'll kill myself at the gate of The Guise Mansion!"
With that, she walked away without looking back.
After Elizabeth left The Guise Mansion, Oliver yelled at Lila, "How can you be so cruel?!"
"Feeling sorry for her?" Lila sneered, "Oliver, let me tell you! If she ever finds out that Clara is marrying is the man she sacrificed her virginity to save is actually Alexander, do you think she won't hate you? If Alexander finds out, our whole family will be doomed! Do you think I merely asked her for five hundred thousand dollars because I really want the money? I'm forcing her to leave Aldoria."
"Forcing her to leave? Where do you expect Elizabeth to go all alone?" Oliver asked.
Lila remarked, "She can go wherever she wants! As long as she doesn't affect Clara's happiness. Oliver, Clara is the child you've watched grow up. You can't favor Elizabeth over her!"
At the mention of Clara, Oliver immediately forgot about Elizabeth.
He smiled at Lila, and said, "Honey, let's quickly prepare our outfits for Clara's engagement party. We can't afford to look shabby when we engage with the Windsor family tomorrow."
Lila was slightly puzzled. She doubted, "Mr. Windsor and Clara are getting engaged, so why hasn't anyone informed us? Did you hear it wrong?"
"Absolutely not. Alexander likes to keep things low-key. He's a very cold person, especially when it comes to proposing and getting engaged to Clara. He wouldn't personally announce it! The fact that he came to us a few days ago to talk about the marriage was already an exception. Do you expect him to make a big deal out of picking up Clara? No way," Oliver said.
Lila asked, "But we should at least know the hotel for the engagement, right?"
"Of course! I have the address. We'll go ourselves. We mustn't annoy Alexander. Once Clara marries into the Windsor family and has Alexander's child, everything will be fine."
Lila nodded deeply in agreement, saying, "You're right."
While Lila and Oliver were excitedly discussing the engagement party outfits, Elizabeth, who had left The Guise Mansion, wandered aimlessly on the streets. She urgently needed a job and an income.
But where could she find a job?
Her phone rang. She thought it was the hospital calling about Esme. But when she looked, it was an unfamiliar number. She answered, "Hello? Who is this?"
"Is this Elizabeth?" a polite voice asked on the other end.
Elizabeth answered cautiously, "Yes."
"We received your manuscript and resume. Can you come for an interview the day after tomorrow?" the voice asked.
Elizabeth thought, 'The day after tomorrow?
Wasn't that the day of Alexander's engagement party?'
Elizabeth was so excited that she cried, "Yes, I'm available. Thank you, thank you for the interview opportunity. This is wonderful."
Elizabeth took the bus, dropped the stationery store and bought pencils, erasers, drawing paper, rulers, and other supplies. She needed to practice her designs at home. She didn't have a computer, so she had to do everything by hand.
The next day, Elizabeth went to the hospital to see Esme early in the morning and then returned to her place to focus on her drawings. She worked on various design sketches late into the night. Elizabeth knew her chances were slim, but she had to seize this opportunity.
She had no other options.
That night, Alexander came back and saw the light in her room was still on. After another hour or two, he came out of his bedroom to check, and the light was still on. He raised his hand to knock on her door to ask what she was doing.
After thinking for a moment, he put his hand down and went back to his bedroom to sleep.
The next day, Alexander got up very early.
Esme had told him that today he and Elizabeth would have a small wedding ceremony. They didn't need to invite guests; it was just a formality. He was supposed to pick up Esme with Elizabeth and then go to the hotel to prepare.
However, Alexander waited in the living room for about an hour, but Elizabeth didn't come out of her bedroom. Alexander was growing impatient.
He thought, 'Did she usually sleep in late before going to the hospital to take care of Esme?
Elizabeth was really lazy!'
After another hour, Elizabeth still hadn't come out of her bedroom. Alexander's eyes was filled with a murderous coldness. He got up and kicked open Elizabeth's bedroom door.
But when he saw the scene in the bedroom, Alexander was stunned.
