Chapter 256 The Party
This hotel was extraordinarily luxurious.
Elizabeth could tell as soon as she reached the entrance that this hotel was far beyond the means of the average working-class person. And today's small party wasn't just about paying fifty thousand dollars; there might be other expenses as well.
Fortunately, she had the five million dollars in compensation that Alexander had given her. If she needed to pay extra, she could manage.
Elizabeth confidently led Alice to the large private room they had reserved.
The large private room was somewhat noisy.
"Mira, is that bag of yours a limited edition? It's so exquisite," Anouk complimented Mira loudly.
"Oh, it's nothing. My husband bought it for me from Accraville. It was quite cheap, just over nine thousand dollars. By the way, your bag looks nice too. What brand is it? It looks like good quality and probably isn't cheap either," Mira said, enjoying the praise while casually complimenting Anouk in return.
"Yeah, mine was twenty-eight thousand dollars," Anouk said nonchalantly.
Mira was left feeling awkward.
It was at this moment that Elizabeth walked in with Alice.
Looking around, she saw that the wealthy women in the room were either wearing flashy furs or dazzling, eye-catching gemstone and diamond jewelry. Some were showing off their expensive brooches worth tens of thousands of dollars, all gathered together, praising each other.
In reality, it was all about subtle competition.
Elizabeth realized that this party wasn't just about excluding the poor mother of the child who had been kicked out.
They were more interested in showing off and competing with each other. Whoever came out on top would gain the most prestige.
When the group of competitive wealthy women saw Elizabeth, they were momentarily stunned.
Elizabeth was wearing a fitted turtleneck sweater and an orange leather skirt.
This outfit was simple and clean, giving off a warm and bright feeling, perfect for attending a cozy event with children.
The clutch she was carrying had no logos, just a simple diamond-patterned design.
If any other woman wore this outfit, it would look extremely ordinary, especially the bag, which looked like cheaply made leather. But in Elizabeth's hands, it had an indescribable mix of ruggedness and softness.
Elizabeth was truly beautiful.
It was an innocent and unselfconscious beauty.
A beauty that was ethereal and serene.
Her beauty made the bejeweled women in the room feel a sense of inferiority.
Anouk, who had just outshone Mira, suddenly felt her superiority vanish in comparison to Elizabeth, nearly grinding her teeth in frustration.
How impressive!
Elizabeth couldn't even afford a pair of earrings!
Not a single piece of jewelry on her, so poor!
Elizabeth hadn't smiled at all, her face stiff. Who knew how many surgeries she had had? Maybe she can't even smile anymore!
"Ms. Spencer, you finally made it. I thought you wouldn't dare to come," Anouk said, rubbing her diamond and looking at Elizabeth with a mocking expression.
Despite the jealousy and hatred from Anouk and the other wealthy women, Elizabeth remained oblivious.
She didn't answer Anouk's question but gently asked Alice, "Alice, do you like playing with these kids?"
Alice nodded happily, saying, "Yes, Mom. Susan, Daphne, and the other kids are all so nice to me."
Elizabeth smiled warmly, "You really like this kindergarten, don't you?"
Alice nodded again, saying, "Of course, Mom. They're all my friends. I love this kindergarten. But Mom, if you don't like me being here, I can transfer."
In the end, Alice's tone was noticeably forlorn.
Elizabeth pressed her forehead against Alice's and said firmly, "Nothing is more important than my baby's environment and friends. As long as you like it, there's no need to transfer."
Since Elizabeth entered the Guise Family as a foster child at twelve, she had rarely made friends.
Clara's friends wouldn't play with her, looking at her with disdain, as if she were a beggar. When Elizabeth finally grew up and went to college, she made friends and treated them sincerely.
However, she was imprisoned in her sophomore year.
Since then, none of her friends or classmates had contacted her.
Elizabeth didn't want Alice to be like her.
"Go play with the other kids. Mommy will stay with the adults," Elizabeth coaxed Alice.
"Okay, Mom," Alice said, skipping off to the children's area.
Elizabeth then looked at the envious and hateful wealthy women and calmly said, "Thank you. If our expenses today exceed fifty thousand dollars, I can cover the extra."
As soon as Elizabeth finished speaking, Anouk angrily questioned, "What do you mean! It's like we're forcing you! If you're so unwilling, why did you come?"
Elizabeth remained composed, "I'm not unwilling. I genuinely thank you."
Anouk sarcastically said, "Not unwilling? So, you really want to join us?"
Elizabeth initially said nothing.
After a pause, she bit her lip, saying, "Yes."
Anouk immediately sneered, "In that case, why don't you come up with a plan on how to keep those poor people pretending to be rich from squeezing into our elite kindergarten to expand their social circles? Our children might be influenced by them! Ms. Spencer, what do you suggest we do?"
Elizabeth was silent.
"Can't come up with anything, can you?" Anouk sneered mockingly, "I think you're just trying to squeeze into our circle by any means necessary. You must have struggled to come up with that fifty thousand dollars, right? By the way, do you have a husband? If you do, why does your child have your last name?"
Elizabeth remained silent.
After a pause, she coldly refused, "Sorry, that's my private matter. I refuse to answer."
Anouk wasn't about to let Elizabeth off the hook. She said viciously, "Won't answer, huh? Let me tell you, you're trying to get your daughter into an elite kindergarten so you can use the opportunity to get close to successful, wealthy men. That way, you can find a rich stepfather for your daughter! Am I right? You look like a gold-digger!"
Elizabeth remained silent.
Anouk said, "Everyone, keep an eye on your husbands. Don't let..."
"Ma'am, here's a fun toy for you," Alice said, suddenly appearing in front of Anouk, smiling and placing something in her hand.
Anouk looked at it with utter disdain, saying, "What is this? Oh my God."
