Chapter 186 What's Going on with Robert?
Elizabeth turned her head, seeing Linda striding in.
"Linda," Elizabeth called out.
"Are you the mistress?" Linda asked sharply, her tone as aggressive as if Elizabeth had stolen her man.
After speaking, Linda stared unblinkingly at Elizabeth.
Everyone in the office also turned to look at Elizabeth.
If anyone else had been questioned like this by Linda, they would have been furious.
However, Elizabeth asked with her face remaining calm, "Excuse me, whose mistress are you talking about?"
Linda snapped, "What do you mean!"
Elizabeth said, "If you're asking whether I'm your husband's mistress, sorry, I don't know your husband. Even if I were your husband's mistress, you should go home and deal with your scumbag husband first!"
Falling silent, Linda was so angry that her hair seemed to stand on end, not expecting Elizabeth, this bumpkin, to be so aggressive.
She said angrily, "What are you talking about! I'm not even married yet!"
"Since you're not married, there's no way I could be seducing your husband! You're slandering me!" Elizabeth retorted and didn't even look at Linda, just sitting at her desk.
She wasn't afraid of death, so why would she be afraid of Linda?
It's just a job!
Elizabeth had long thought about it: as long as she was in Sunwillow City, she was doomed to bad luck.
At twelve, she entered the Guise family, treated like a vagrant. After getting out of prison, she was humiliated by Sunwillow City's high society as if she were a prostitute.
Although she was constantly hunted during the six years she was on the run, her work and life were relatively stable. Now that she was back in Sunwillow City, she had just found a job, coincidentally running into Elodie's sister, Harper.
This meant that her work here would never be peaceful.
So Elizabeth didn't plan to stay at this job.
Since she had already decided to quit, who was she afraid of?
Linda's face was extremely embarrassed by Elizabeth's questioning. She retorted, "It wasn't me asking you! Everyone in the cafeteria saw it; it was Harper asking you!"
Elizabeth said sarcastically, "If Harper was asking me, then what are you doing here? Can I say that you're using work hours to gossip instead of doing your job? The company is really unlucky to have hired someone like you!"
Elizabeth might not say much, but every word she said left people speechless.
Linda was left speechless by Elizabeth's retort.
The colleagues also noticed that although Elizabeth dressed plainly, she was not someone to be bullied. She wouldn't let anyone push her around.
Afraid of getting into trouble, the colleagues all kept quiet.
Moreover, Robert in the company seemed to favor Elizabeth a lot.
So, the brewing storm quickly dissipated.
Linda, who had been so arrogant just moments ago, handed Elizabeth a stack of documents, ordering, "Sort out these drafts as soon as possible. You said that you didn't get this job through connections, and that you can draw and understand computers, so you should be able to understand these drafts. Remember, don't make any mistakes. These are architectural designs, as any mistake could be a huge responsibility you can't afford!"
With that, Linda clicked her high heels, leaving the design department with a stack of things.
Elizabeth didn't say anything more, picking up the documents Linda had thrown at her and beginning to sort them out seriously.
As long as no one bothered her, she was happy to work there.
Elizabeth's first day at the company was a mix of emotions. She had originally thought Linda would make things difficult for her, forcing her to work late into the night to sort out the documents. However, to her surprise, as soon as it was 5:30, Linda said, "The company doesn't have a culture of working overtime. Those documents can be sorted out tomorrow. Don't work yourself into having dark circles under your eyes; you won't even be able to be a mistress then. Go home!"
Although Linda's words were harsh, Elizabeth didn't take them to heart.
Like the other employees, she grabbed her bag, leaving the design department. When she reached the front desk, she saw Julia waiting for her.
"Elizabeth," Julia called out excitedly.
"Work's over," Elizabeth said with a smile.
"How was your first day?" Julia asked.
"It was fine," Elizabeth replied.
They entered the elevator together, and as they exited, Julia whispered to her, "Let me tell you, everyone on our floor was talking about Harper today. You know, Harper didn't come back to work all afternoon. She's always been so arrogant in the company, but today was the first time she was so upset. I'm happy about it, but if she continues to work here, you should be careful."
Elizabeth nodded, saying, "I got it; thank you."
"Do you really know Elodie's sister's fiancé, Owen?" Julia asked curiously.
Elizabeth asked, "What did Gavin say?"
With her sharp mind, Julia must have asked Gavin first.
"How did you know I asked Gavin? You can guess everything." Julia laughed. "But Gavin didn't say anything. He just told me to look out for you in the company. If anyone bullies you, I'm supposed to tell him. Are you Gavin's girlfriend?"
Elizabeth remained silent.
Just as she was wondering how to respond, a car stopped in front of them. Julia immediately exclaimed, "Gavin. What a coincidence."
At that moment, Gavin poked his head out of the car, saying, "Julia, take the bus home!"
Elizabeth also smiled slightly, saying goodbye to Julia, "See you tomorrow, Julia." With that, she opened the car door and got in.
Julia was silent.
Watching Elizabeth get into Gavin's car and leave, Julia muttered to herself, "So she really is Gavin's girlfriend. I should take even better care of her."
Meanwhile, Gavin's car had already driven far away.
Alexander, who was sitting next to Elizabeth, was resting with his eyes closed. Elizabeth wanted to ask him something but didn't dare. After a few minutes, she asked Gavin, "Gavin, where's Alice? Kindergarten usually ends at 4:30."
"We'll pick you up first, then go get Alice," Alexander suddenly said from beside her.
Elizabeth was startled, turning to look at Alexander, who seemed indifferent.
Elizabeth bit her lip, saying nothing more.
"How was your first day at work?" Alexander asked nonchalantly.
"It was fine." Elizabeth said. For her, having a job and being self-sufficient was the best.
"Nothing happened?" Alexander asked again.
Elizabeth didn't answer.
Alexander was very capable. Even though it was her first day at work, he probably knew everything that had happened.
After a few seconds, she said softly, "Don't you already know?"
"I want you to tell me yourself. What's the deal with Robert?" Alexander asked calmly.
