Chapter 85 Alexander Saved Elizabeth

Elizabeth grabbed the heavy bag stuffed with cash, but her mood was anything but light.

If she had any other choice, she wouldn't have taken the money. A hundred grand wasn't a fortune, but it was enough to crush her pride. But survival trumped dignity. Biting her lip, she clutched the bag and walked up to the stone-faced Alexander. "Thanks."

Alexander stayed silent.

He had planned to give her five million, but she didn't trust he'd follow through!

His expression turned even colder. "No need to thank me."

Elizabeth felt torn.

After the divorce, as she stepped out of City Hall, she knew this was it—no more ties to Alexander. Their marriage had barely lasted two months, filled with nothing but fights and misery.

But somehow, right now, she felt a pang of reluctance. Then, she felt a tiny flutter in her lower abdomen, like a little hiccup from the baby.

The baby was only three months along and couldn't hiccup yet.

But it did have a heartbeat. During a check-up, the doctor had told her, "After three months, you'll start to feel the baby's heartbeat in your belly. Pay attention to when you feel it for the first time."

Elizabeth had been waiting for that moment but hadn't felt it yet. She had asked the doctor, who said, "Just wait a bit longer."

But now, she felt the baby's heartbeat for the first time, as if it didn't want to be separated from Alexander.

Why would it be reluctant?

He had given her a bit of warmth, just for a day or two, gifting her clothes and a computer. But mostly, he had been cold and distant, looking down on her. Why did she feel a bit reluctant to let him go?

She had to leave him right away!

Alexander belonged to Clara!

With that thought, Elizabeth turned and walked away with the money.

"Stop!" Alexander called out from behind her.

Elizabeth stopped but didn't turn around. "Mr. Windsor, what else do you want?"

"What's your deal with Wesley?" Alexander asked.

"No deal at all!" Elizabeth shot back.

"No deal? Then why did he kidnap you while you were pregnant? You even left him critically injured, and Owen almost died because of it." Alexander thought Elizabeth was still hiding something, and he felt like shaking the truth out of her.

When would she finally come clean?

Elizabeth suddenly turned around, tears streaming down her face. "Mr. Windsor, what do you want me to say? Do you want me to say that I knew Wesley a long time ago? That when I was in college, because I thought the allowance Oliver gave me was too little, I messed around with that old Wesley? That I had a dirty relationship with Wesley two years ago? That even during my two years in prison, Wesley provided me with some stuff? That even the baby in my belly is Wesley's? Is that what you want?"

"Mr. Windsor, do you also want to say that the baby in my belly is Wesley's, yet I could still be so ruthless to him, stabbing him and crippling him? Is that it?"

"Isn't it?" Alexander's deep eyes locked onto Elizabeth, asking calmly.

"The truth doesn't matter anymore," Elizabeth snapped at Alexander. "It's got nothing to do with you. Even if I was carrying Wesley's child, it was before we got married. Even if I had a messed-up relationship with Wesley, it doesn't concern you now! We're divorced! My business with the Green family is none of your concern!"

"Then get lost!" Alexander shouted, his anger flaring.

"You were the one who told me to stop!" Elizabeth cried, tears streaming down her face. "Mr. Windsor, I hope we never see each other again!"

With that, she turned and walked away.

She had meant to ask Alexander if she could visit Esme's grave in the future, but in that heated moment, she forgot.

Elizabeth had just taken a step when Gavin grabbed her arm from behind.

Gavin was always the disciplined one. As Alexander's personal bodyguard and assistant, he never spoke out of turn. But seeing Elizabeth and Alexander still at each other's throats even after the divorce, he couldn't stand it anymore.

Alexander had always been ruthless, even to his own family. To get to the bottom of Elizabeth and Wesley's situation, Alexander had even gone to the Guise Mansion demanding answers. But he still hadn't uncovered the truth.

Alexander just wanted to understand what was going on with Elizabeth so he could help her deal with Wesley.

"Mr. Brown, let go of me!" Elizabeth said angrily, glaring at Gavin.

"Ms. Spencer, Mr. Windsor doesn't mean that," Gavin tried to explain.

"Let her go!" Alexander barked.

For the first time, Gavin disobeyed Alexander's order. He kept his grip on Elizabeth's arm and said, "Ms. Spencer, Mr. Windsor is doing this for your own good. Do you think Owen's tough talk alone can control Wesley? Even if Owen can control Wesley, it's only because he's using Mr. Windsor's name to act tough. But you saw it yourself, Wesley was hesitant to confront Owen openly, but he was seething with anger. He even hired a hitman to take out Owen. Wesley, a desperate fugitive, was bold enough to try to kill Owen. Do you think he'd spare you?"

Elizabeth shivered in fear.

She bit her lip and stopped moving.

"Only if you tell Mr. Windsor the truth can he know how to help you and solve this problem," Gavin said earnestly.

Elizabeth paused and said, feeling wronged, "I don't know Wesley at all! I've never known him!"

"Okay, I understand, Ms. Spencer. That's all Mr. Windsor wanted to hear. You can go back now. Don't worry, Mr. Windsor will handle this, and you won't have to worry about Wesley bothering you anymore," Gavin said, conveying what Alexander hadn't.

He knew it was hard to get Alexander to say those words.

Elizabeth turned to look at Alexander, who still wore a cold expression.

He couldn't be bothered to look at her.

Elizabeth's anger faded, and she said sincerely, "Thank you."

With that, she left, feeling sad.

Elizabeth had just taken a step when a woman in her thirties suddenly rushed over. The woman's hair was a mess, and she held a knife, charging at Elizabeth with a fierce look. As she charged, she screamed, "You bitch! You ruined my family, made my son lose his father at such a young age. I'll kill you!"

Elizabeth was frozen in fear.

Just as the knife was about to plunge into Elizabeth's chest, Alexander took a quick step and pulled her into his arms. At the same time, he grabbed the knife with his other hand.

Blood flowed down Alexander's hand.

Elizabeth screamed in terror.
