Chapter 362 Beware of Sulfuric Acid
Harper even shivered under the gaze of those eyes.
"What's wrong, Harper?" Elizabeth asked with concern.
Harper smiled. "I just suddenly felt a chill. Maybe I didn't wear enough today. I want to look stunning."
Elizabeth sincerely complimented, "You look very beautiful today."
"It's all thanks to you," Harper said, deeply grateful to Elizabeth.
Actually, Harper had worn many nice clothes before.
But most of them were clothes Elodie had worn and discarded, or ones Elodie didn't like in the first place and then gave to her out of charity.
Elodie never took her to the mall to pick out what she liked, like Elizabeth did. How could she have been so blind to cause trouble for Elizabeth, such a good friend who valued her so much?
Which girl in this world would be so generous to buy a trunk full of clothes for her friend without hesitation?
Harper felt that those clothes must have cost several thousand dollars.
And every piece was in a style Harper liked. Although they weren't very expensive, mostly a few hundred dollars per set, and the shoes were about a hundred dollars a pair, Harper loved them.
Today, she had put together an outfit that wasn't too flashy but looked professional, elegant, and clean.
Not only did Elizabeth compliment her, but as soon as she arrived at work in the morning, Julia and other colleagues also praised her.
Harper's face was beaming with a smile.
"Is he good to you?" Elizabeth asked. She had more experience in relationships than Harper.
Harper blushed, and humbly said humbly, "Elizabeth, if this were the old me, I would have accepted Mr. Lavien without hesitation. But now, there's nothing between us."
"You don't want to marry a rich man?" Elizabeth asked.
Harper nodded. "No, I don't."
After a pause, she said, "On Saturday, Julia and I went to the Windsor Manor. Officially, we were Robert's and Simon's dates, but honestly, Elodie and I were worried you'd be at a disadvantage at the party. Now that I think about it, what's so good about high society? It's all scheming and plotting. Luckily, Mr. Windsor protected you at the party, and you managed to get through it. Declan or Marcus—who's the kind one? They're aristocrats, pampered their whole lives, afraid that people like us might diminish their status. I don't want to marry into aristocracy!"
"
Harper couldn't help but put her hands on her hips, looking like a shrew.
Elizabeth laughed. "Shrew! You're showing your true colors."
Harper didn't hide it. "Sure! But if I marry a rich man, I can't even be a shrew. How uncomfortable would that be? I can't scheme and plot, but I'm good at arguing."
"Look at you, taking pride in arguing. You really have no shame," Elizabeth teased.
Harper and Elizabeth, chatting and laughing, walked into a chocolate shop.
Elizabeth picked the best ones and bought two boxes of chocolates for everyone in the design department office. She also bought two boxes each for Harper and Julia.
While waiting in line to pay, Harper's phone rang.
The phone was one Elizabeth had bought for Harper yesterday. Seeing Harper's phone ring, Elizabeth teased immediately, "It must be Mr. Lavien calling. You just got your new number yesterday. Who else could it be? You don't want to marry him, but he wants to be with you. I bet he's asking you out for dinner."
Harper smiled and looked at the caller ID. When she saw the number, her smile faded.
The call was from her mother.
Yesterday, after Elizabeth bought her the phone, Harper had called home.
She really wanted to reconcile with her parents.
She always felt that no matter what, they were her parents. Besides, it wasn't good for her to keep living at Julia's house. However, when her parents received her call, they scolded her harshly.
"You wretched girl! Why are you calling now? Are you here to mock Elodie? Do you want to see how much Elodie has embarrassed herself? You heartless person! Elodie has helped you so much since you were little. I curse you to get hit by a car when you go out!" This was what Ursa had yelled at Harper over the phone yesterday.
Harper had cried under the covers for a long time.
But when she thought about the insults Elizabeth had endured, and how Elizabeth could still hold her head high, work diligently, and not let those negative emotions affect her, Harper became much stronger. She didn't even tell Julia how badly Ursa had scolded her yesterday.
Early in the morning, Harper focused intently on her work, trying her best to keep smiling and not let Ursa's scolding affect her.
However, Harper didn't expect Ursa to call her at this moment.
She covered the receiver and told Elizabeth honestly, "It's my mom. I hope she wants me to come home soon. Elizabeth, I'll go take this call."
Elizabeth nodded. "Go ahead; talk to your mom nicely."
Harper nodded and went out.
Elizabeth continued to wait in line to pay.
This chocolate shop was very famous, and it took a few minutes to get to the counter. After paying, Elizabeth carried two large bags of chocolates out but didn't see Harper at the shop entrance.
Where could Harper have gone while taking a call?
Elizabeth had to carry the two large bags of chocolates, which was exhausting. She couldn't even free a hand to call Harper, so she just carried the bags and walked back to the office. It wasn't until she was about 150 feet from the office that she noticed something was off.
Across from the office building, Elizabeth saw Harper.
At that moment, Harper was still engrossed in her phone call and didn't notice a figure slowly approaching her with a small bottle in hand, ready to pour it on her..
It all happened so suddenly.
No one saw how the woman appeared in front of Harper.
At that critical moment, Elizabeth screamed, "Harper, watch out!"
Harper froze for a moment, then saw the woman with the small bottle pouring something on her face.
Elizabeth reacted immediately. "Watch out for sulfuric acid!"
Harper was already petrified, and at that moment, Elizabeth felt despair.
Then, an arm blocked Harper's face just in time, knocking the small bottle out of the woman's hand. The liquid splashed onto the arm.
"It hurts so much!" Robert immediately cried out in pain.
