Chapter 63 Even More Ruthless Than Them
Elizabeth shot her a look and said, "Your plan worked, right? So why are you still hanging around?"
Clara smirked, all smug and sarcastic. "Elizabeth, I thought you had some game. Weren't you all sure Mr. Windsor was into you, thinking you had a shot? But look at you now, just another worker bee. Weren't you here just over twenty days ago?"
Yeah, twenty days ago, Clara had kidnapped Elizabeth.
Elizabeth stared at Clara, wanting to throttle her right then and there.
She despised the Guise family with every fiber of her being. She never got why her mom sent her to live with the Guise family when she was twelve. What was the deal between her parents and the Guises? Sure, her family was dirt poor, but she'd rather beg than live under someone else's roof.
Eight years with the Guises, and she got zero love. Just scorn, pity, and a prison sentence, along with the baby in her belly.
But no matter how much she loathed them, she couldn't touch Clara right now. She wasn't going back to jail, and she didn't want her baby to end in an orphanage.
And then there was Esme.
Poor Esme. Even though the Windsor family had taken her in, only Elizabeth knew the loneliness and sadness in Esme's heart.
Elizabeth couldn't abandon Esme. So, she had to suck it up.
She asked Clara, "I don't get why your family has it out for me. Why do you keep using my mom's grave to mess with me? Clara, you and Alexander are practically a done deal. I'm just here for Esme. Do you really need to push me like this?"
"Push you?" Clara's eyes blazed.
Clara wanted to spill everything she knew, but she couldn't. Not yet. She wasn't Alexander's wife yet, and Elizabeth could still see Esme, so she had to keep her mouth shut for now.
She couldn't tell Elizabeth why she really hated her, but she had to make sure Elizabeth knew just how much.
"Not only will I push you, but I'll push you to your grave! And I'll kill that bastard in your belly! You shameless slut! Don't think I don't know your game. You want to use that bastard to get close to Alexander's mom, then to Alexander, and use the kid to blackmail him. Elizabeth, you're just a jailbird who slept around in prison. You're trash! How dare you try to seduce my fiancé! I'll kill that kid in your belly today! Let's see who saves you then!"
With Alexander backing her, Clara was riding high, especially with Elizabeth out of favor.
But as soon as she finished, she saw Elizabeth grab a brick. Elizabeth raised it and aimed for Clara's belly. "Let's see if Alexander still wants you if I kill the kid in your belly now!"
Elizabeth's face was ice-cold, her voice steady, but her move with the brick was deadly and precise. She aimed right at Clara's belly. If that brick landed, Clara would definitely lose the baby.
Clara screamed and bolted.
Elizabeth just smirked.
That half-brick? Elizabeth had stashed it before hitting the motel yesterday. It was her insurance against the Guise family. She knew they wanted her dead, and with Alexander's protection gone, she was on her own.
To protect herself and her unborn child, Elizabeth had decided last night that if anyone came for her, she'd take them out with a brick first.
And it worked. Clara ran off scared.
Elizabeth tossed the brick aside.
One-time use, though. She had other tricks up her sleeve in her bag.
Watching Clara scurry away, Elizabeth headed to her construction job.
After a day of hard labor, Elizabeth didn't feel worn out. Actually, she felt more relaxed than when she was stuck in an office, always worried about getting the cold shoulder.
Sure, the work was dirty and exhausting, but her mind was at peace. Plus, the cafeteria here served up plenty of food, and she ate her fill.
After work, Elizabeth went to the bus stop. This was the burbs, and the bus only came every half hour. She wanted to get back early to check on Esme, see if her fever had gone down. Anxious, she kept glancing down the road.
But instead of the bus, she saw someone else.
With a cold smile, she said, "Your daughter tried to scare me this morning, and now it's your turn, Oliver. What do I owe the Guise family that you gotta push me to the edge?"
Oliver raised his hand and slapped her hard.
Elizabeth was alone at the bus stop, and Oliver didn't hold back. As he slapped her, he spat, "You ungrateful bitch! You tried to kill Clara's baby with a brick? If Mr. Windsor doesn't take you out, I will!"
He raised his fist to hit her again. But then he saw Elizabeth holding an old-school pencil sharpener knife, longer and sharper than usual, glinting coldly.
Elizabeth lunged at Oliver with the knife, while dialing a number, shouting, "Hello, police? I'm at the bus stop in the south of the city, near the construction site, and someone's attacking me."
Oliver turned and ran, panicked. He didn't get far before stopping, turning back to glare at her, cursing, "You ungrateful bitch, just you wait!"
Watching him leave, Elizabeth's eyes welled up.
Deep down, she had feelings for Oliver because he had paid her tuition for eight years. During those years, she had wished Oliver was her dad.
But that was just a dream.
For Clara, Oliver would do anything to destroy Elizabeth.
Tears streamed down her face.
When Oliver got home, he kept cursing, "That bitch had a weapon. She tried to kill Clara's baby with a brick, and when I slapped her, she pulled a knife on me. She's a sinner, a rebel!"
Next to him, Lila gave a wicked smile and said, "I have a better idea to make her desperate. Just not sure if you're willing to go all the way."
