Chapter 17 The Perfect Wedding

Elizabeth instantly understood.

It turned out that Esme had specially arranged it.

Esme had told her a few days ago that she wanted to give her a surprise.

Elizabeth felt a sudden warmth in her heart.

No matter how Alexander treated her, Esme was the only warmth Elizabeth had in this world. Esme had only two months left to live, so for Esme's sake, Elizabeth had to cooperate with Alexander and continue their act.

"Thank you, Mom. I love this surprise so much. Mom, look, this is the wedding dress Alexander prepared for me. Is it beautiful?" Elizabeth asked, lifting her wedding dress.

Esme looked her up and down several times, and then her eyes welled up with tears.

"Elizabeth, I never expected you to be so beautiful. You and Alexander make such a perfect couple," Esme said, her smile widening with joy.

She wasn't lying.

Not only did Esme think Elizabeth and Alexander were a perfect match, but even the restaurant staff thought the newlyweds were a perfect pair.

"Elizabeth, I've never been married in my life, and never worn a wedding dress. I always hoped you could wear a wedding dress and proudly get married. But because of my illness, Alexander didn't want to make it too grand, so he set your wedding here. No one came, but I can still bless you. Is that okay?" Esme asked Elizabeth apologetically.

Elizabeth knew that the reason Alexander didn't want a grand wedding wasn't because of Esme, but because their relationship was just a contract.

But she didn't say anything else, just smiled and said, "Mom, your blessing is enough. I don't know any of those other people. I'll be living with Alexander in the future, not with others. Why would we need so many people?"

Esme was even happier. She raised her wrist, took Elizabeth's hand, and put an expensive bracelet on her wrist, smiling as she remarked, "My daughter-in-law is the most sensible and understanding daughter-in-law. I'm happy. Even if I go to heaven, I'll be at peace."

Elizabeth held Esme's hand and said, "Mom, today is a happy day for Alexander and me. You can't say things like that."

"Okay, let's go in," Esme said with a smile.

Alexander, who was holding Elizabeth's arm, hadn't said much the whole time. He couldn't understand why Elizabeth, who was always so cold and indifferent in front of everyone else, was so talkative in front of Esme. She genuinely made Esme happy.

Alexander's heart was slightly moved.

The two of them walked hand in hand, with Esme in a wheelchair beside them, to the small chapel on the restaurant's rooftop. Everything was already set up and prepared, and there was a pastor at the front of the chapel.

Walking into such an environment, Elizabeth suddenly felt like this was her real wedding. She had a sacred feeling.

She suddenly felt very self-conscious.

Would she ever have a real wedding with the man she loved in this life?

Probably not.

What man in this world would marry a woman who had been in prison, was homeless, couldn't find a job, and was pregnant out of wedlock?

Probably none.

So she decided to treat this wedding as a real one.

In front of the pastor, Elizabeth listened devoutly to the vows.

When the pastor asked her, "Do you take Alexander to be your husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse, to love and to cherish, until death do you part?"

Elizabeth nodded affirmatively and answered, "I do!"

As she said this, her heart was filled with immense sorrow.

In her heart, she silently spoke to her child, 'Baby, did you witness my wedding? I might never get married again in this life. I'll just consider this as finding you a dad, okay?'

The pastor's voice rang in her ears, "The bride and groom may now exchange rings."

The rings were bought by Alexander in advance. Elizabeth didn't know how much they were worth; she just followed the steps and exchanged rings with Alexander. When Alexander lifted her hand to put the ring on her, Elizabeth felt the same sensation she had that night.

There was always an illusion that Alexander was the man she had slept with.

"Now, the groom may kiss the bride," the pastor's cheerful voice brought Elizabeth back to reality.

Elizabeth's mind went blank.

Here, she and Alexander were supposed to kiss?

How could that be!

Even though she had never seen the man who had died, she couldn't kiss two men in such a short span of two months.

She would feel guilty and disgusted with herself.

Instinctively, Elizabeth turned her head to the side. Esme, sitting far away in the audience, thought Elizabeth was just shy and looked at the newlyweds with a kind smile.

Alexander, however, leaned down forcefully, accurately capturing Elizabeth's lips and kissed her.

She had nowhere to escape and couldn't struggle in front of Esme. Being controlled in his arms reminded her once again of the man who had died.

Alexander and that man had the same domineering strength.

After the kiss, Elizabeth's face was as red as blood, and Alexander also felt a strange sense of familiarity with her.

This feeling made him extremely frustrated.

Esme, who was beside them, said, "I wish you both a lifetime of love and happiness."

A wedding witnessed only by the pastor and Esme came to an end, but outside the restaurant, three people were hiding in a corner.

It was Oliver, Lila, and Clara. Having suffered such humiliation, how could they be content?

Especially Clara, who was insanely jealous.

The three of them were plotting in the background. Since Alexander didn't know that it was Elizabeth who saved him with her virginity that day, why did he marry Elizabeth and promise to marry Clara in two months?

There must be another reason.

At that moment, a woman dressed as a nurse passed by them. Lila stepped forward and flattered the nurse, making her very happy. Lila then casually asked, "Why is the newlywed couple having their wedding so inconspicuously? How come they didn't even invite any friends or family?"

The nurse sighed sadly and revealed, "It's quite pitiful. This lady's son is very capable, but she only has two months to live. Her daughter-in-law is her choice, but her son doesn't necessarily like her. They held a low-profile wedding here to fulfill the mother's wish."

Lila was silent.

So that was how it was!

She shared this good news with Oliver and Clara.

Clara became even more jealous. She claimed, "Elizabeth actually won Mrs. Windsor's favor? I will make sure she suffers terribly!"

With that, she took out her phone and dialed a number. "Peter, I need you to deal with a woman for me. Name your price!"
