Chapter 78 Changed the Target
Clara shot Elizabeth a smug look and sneered, "You heard right, I'm getting engaged to Alexander tomorrow! And you, you shameless fraud, you stole my husband for two months! Getting publicly humiliated by Wesley is just your karma! And the worst part? You even stabbed that old geezer. And Mr. Tudor is still protecting you! Couldn't snag my husband, so you went after Mr. Tudor, huh?"
Elizabeth took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm. She smiled at Clara and said, "Congrats on your engagement tomorrow. As the adopted daughter of the Guise family, I'll definitely be there to give you my blessings."
"You wouldn't dare!"
"If you don't leave right now, I will! I've got nothing left to lose thanks to you people. What do I have to be afraid of?" Elizabeth shot Clara a fierce glare and added, "Tomorrow at your engagement party, I'll announce that the baby I'm carrying is Alexander's. Let's see who gets embarrassed then!"
"You!" Clara pointed at Elizabeth, fuming. "You shameless woman."
"Get out now! If you don't, I swear I'll crash the engagement party." Elizabeth's eyes were cold as ice.
Clara turned and bolted.
She had been looking forward to the engagement party with Alexander for two months, living in fear for two months, and she didn't want Elizabeth to ruin it.
Left alone, Elizabeth sat on the edge of her bed, tears of anger streaming down her face. She clenched her fists and pounded the pillow in frustration.
She picked up her phone and dialed Oliver's number.
Elizabeth wanted to ask Oliver why the entire Guise family seemed hell-bent on framing her. But after dialing, she hung up.
She didn't want to provoke Alexander and cause trouble for Owen.
From now on, Elizabeth just wanted to stay by Owen's side and live a good life.
That night, Elizabeth barely slept.
She had a bunch of dreams—some about her time in prison, suffering all kinds of hardships, some about the blurry figure of her unborn child's father, and some about her two months with Esme.
Mostly, she dreamed of the few days of warmth Alexander had shown her, buying her clothes, getting her a computer, treating her like family.
In her dreams, Owen was the only one missing.
But that didn't shake Elizabeth's resolve to be good to Owen from now on.
The next day was Sunday.
Elizabeth got up early and absentmindedly cleaned her tiny room, less than 100 square feet. The place was so small, yet she swept it three or four times. Her neighbor, noticing her repetitive actions, asked, "Elizabeth, what's up? Got something on your mind?"
Elizabeth replied mechanically, "He's getting engaged."
"Who's getting engaged? Your ex-boyfriend? You look like you've lost a lover, poor Elizabeth. It's okay, there will be better guys waiting for you in the future, don't be sad!" The neighbor tried to comfort her.
Elizabeth snapped back to reality, her face instantly blushing.
She forced a smile and said, "No, it's my cousin getting engaged back home today. I couldn't make it back to celebrate with her."
The neighbor smiled and didn't press further.
Elizabeth spent a torturous morning, unable to sit still.
She couldn't stop thinking about how, in some fancy hotel downtown, Clara was probably in her engagement dress, soaking up all the attention with Alexander by her side.
In reality, Alexander and Clara were having their engagement party at a hotel, but it wasn't as grand as Elizabeth imagined. It was the same small hotel where Alexander and Elizabeth had gotten engaged.
The place was tiny.
There were so few guests that they only needed four tables.
These were just some of the top figures in Aldoria.
For instance, the Windsor family, including Owen's parents and Owen himself, the Jones family, and the Bell family were all there. But Alexander's father didn't make it back from overseas.
These were old aristocratic families, and it was only because Marcus insisted that Alexander reluctantly invited them.
If it were up to Alexander, he wouldn't have invited anyone.
He wouldn't even have held an engagement party because his marriage to Clara was a personal matter.
Alexander knew he was marrying Clara because she had saved him and was pregnant with his child.
He had no love for Clara.
In fact, seeing Clara annoyed him in ways he couldn't describe.
But for Clara, this was a huge honor.
The entire upper class of Sunwillow City finally knew Clara's status.
Take Elodie, for example. Normally, she wouldn't even give Clara the time of day. She'd think it was beneath her to let Clara shine her shoes. But now, seeing Alexander with his arm around Clara, mingling with the guests, she was scared stiff.
She had often belittled Clara before.
Now she deeply regretted it.
Elodie forced a smile and said, "Mrs. Windsor, let's have lunch and go shopping together sometime."
Clara replied arrogantly, "We'll see!"
Elodie fell silent.
She was filled with jealousy and hatred but dared not show it. Elodie had always thought she was the most qualified woman to marry Alexander, but she didn't know that Alexander's chosen one was Clara.
It seemed she had no hope of marrying Alexander.
Since she couldn't marry Alexander, Elodie decided to set her sights on Owen.
"Mr. Tudor." Elodie approached Owen with a glass of wine and initiated a toast.
Owen flashed a wicked smile and asked, "Miss Williams, you usually don't even look at me. What's going on today?"
"My grandfather usually keeps a tight rein on me, but today, everyone's happy because of Alexander's engagement!" Elodie said with a charming smile.
"I think it's because you see no chance with Alexander, so you're setting your sights on me?" Owen looked at Elodie with a mischievous grin.
"You're so annoying!" Elodie pretended to be coy and said, "You have such a sharp tongue!"
"Shall we drink a cross-cupped wine?" Owen asked.
"Sure, I'm not afraid." Elodie and Owen went to a corner and really drank cross-cupped wine.
After drinking, Owen took out his phone and dialed a number.
"Mr. Tudor, who are you calling?" Elodie pouted, already starting to get jealous.
Owen touched Elodie's cheek and replied, "Calling your love rival."
Elodie fell silent.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth, who had lost her appetite and hadn't eaten lunch, eagerly answered her ringing phone, "Hello."
"Come out now, I'm taking you somewhere," Owen commanded.
