Chapter 22 Improved Impressions
"Mom, I'm sorry." Elizabeth's tears fell on the corner of Esme's blanket. She cried hoarsely, "Mom, I just started at the company and have to obey my boss's orders. My boss suddenly decided to send me on a business trip for a few days, so I couldn't come to see you in time and inform you beforehand."
"It's my fault. My health condition is getting worse." Esme, still connected to various tubes, looked at herself and smiled bitterly as she stated, "I don't even know if I can wake up again after closing my eyes."
"Mom, don't say that. I don't want you to leave me. If you leave, I'll be so lonely. I don't have many relatives left in this world," Elizabeth pleaded as she leaned on Esme's nose, crying as if her heart was breaking.
That day, Elizabeth, who had just been rescued, didn't return to her place to rest, instead, she stayed in the hospital to take care of Esme. She bathed her, washed her hair, and trimmed her nails. Esme, who had been on the brink of death, looked much better.
Because Elizabeth took such good care of Esme, Alexander seemed redundant. Most of the time, he just stood quietly on the side, watching Esme and Elizabeth chat and laugh.
It wasn't until the evening, after Elizabeth saw Esme fall asleep, that she left the hospital and returned to the place she shared with Alexander.
At home, before returning to her bedroom, Elizabeth handed the bracelet back to Alexander. She said to him, "This is too valuable. I should return it to you."
Alexander had put the bracelet back on Elizabeth on their way to the hospital. He looked at Elizabeth but didn't take the bracelet. Instead, he said solemnly, "The bracelet isn't for you; it's to comfort my mother's heart."
Elizabeth smiled faintly, replying, "I never expected you to give me anything valuable."
After Alexander saved her this time, Elizabeth spoke more to him, "Mr. Windsor, when Aunt Esme and I first met, she approached me. She saw I was young and pitied me, took care of me, and we gradually became close."
She continued, "Later, when her condition worsened, she couldn't handle heavy work anymore, so I helped her. This is the friendship we built in prison. I was never the scheming fraud you imagined. Please also handle your relationship with your girlfriend Clara. I don't want to face such a deadly situation again."
After saying this, Elizabeth placed the bracelet on the shelf next to Alexander. Without waiting for him to say anything, she turned and went into her bedroom.
Alexander suddenly felt a sense of rejection and distance from her.
His deep, cold eyes couldn't help but glance at her again.
Her short hair was a bit messy, and her slightly swollen cheeks looked crystal clear, making her appear both delicate and endearing. Yet, her expression was neither humble nor arrogant, and her eyes were serene and unperturbed.
She had reverted to that calm and innocent state, as if the events that happened around her had nothing to do with her.
Alexander suddenly wondered, 'After having just survived a a dangerous situation, shouldn't she take this opportunity to act a bit spoiled or flatter me?'
She didn't.
She seemed to live in her own little world.
Such an Elizabeth couldn't possibly be a scheming fraud.
Elizabeth seemed more like a fragile soul, wrapped in a shell, having seen the treachery of the world.
Alexander's heart felt a pinch of sympathy.
At that moment, his phone rang. He picked it up and saw it was Clara calling. He answered in a low voice, "What is it?"
"Mr. Windsor," Clara's teeth chattered as she spoke, "I know I'm doomed this time. I won't attempt anything else. I just want to apologize to you. After explaining, I'll disappear from your sight forever. Mr. Windsor, can you come down to see me one last time? If you don't, I'll stay in the rain until you do."
"Is it raining?" Alexander wondered as he walked to the balcony and looked out. It was indeed raining. Looking down, he saw Clara kneeling in the rain, looking up at his floor.
Alexander grabbed an umbrella and went down.
"Mr. Windsor, Mr. Windsor. You really came down to see me." Clara's lips were purple from the cold. She crawled to Alexander and hugged his leg while she begged, "Mr. Windsor, listen to me. Let me finish. You can kill me afterward, and I'll be willing to perish by your hands, but please give me a chance to explain."
Seeing the groveling and despicable behavior of Clara, Alexander felt immense disgust. Yesterday, he almost kicked her to death.
Ultimately, because she had once saved his life with her virginity, giving him the chance to successfully take control of the Windsor Group, he stopped his foot at the last moment.
But his disgust for Clara grew day by day.
Clara was no longer the obedient and helpless girl from the night she saved his life. Even though he had promised to marry her in two months, she still frequently did things that infuriated him.
Seeing that Alexander didn't intend to leave, Clara lay at his feet, looking up with tearful eyes as she began to explain, "You know, Mr. Windsor. I started liking you while you were exiled abroad by the Windsor family. But I also knew you were destined for great things. Until you gained control of the Windsor family, you wouldn't consider anyone to be your girlfriend."
Clara continued, "I could only wait silently and hope to help you. Finally, one day, I got the chance to save your life. I used my virginity to save you, but I never thought I would ever get to marry you. I knew I wasn't worthy of you but you still promised to marry me. You even set a date for our wedding to be held in two months, yet now you had a wedding with Elizabeth. Who could bear that?"
She added, "I love you so much, Mr. Windsor. Seeing you marry another woman, I couldn't bear it. I just wanted someone to teach Elizabeth a lesson. I didn't expect those thugs to rob her. I didn't know how it ended up like that. I never wanted Elizabeth to die. I just wanted to force her to leave you. I don't want to lose you. I love you, Mr. Windsor. I'm sorry. I will never bother you again."
After saying this, Clara let go of Alexander's leg and crawled away slowly.
Alexander immediately threw away the umbrella and helped Clara up.
Clara instantly threw herself into his arms. "Mr. Windsor, you forgive me, don't you? You forgive me?" she said, her eyes gleaming with a venomous light.
This pitiful and weak act was a trick taught by Lila. It really worked.
Alexander said calmly, "I said I would marry you in two months, and I won't go back on my word. As my fiancée, don't cause me any more trouble."
"Yes, Mr. Windsor. I'll be good. I promise I won't upset your again!" Clara replied and nodded repeatedly.
At that moment, Alexander's phone rang. He picked it up and immediately answered, "Hello."
