Chapter 18 Curled Up in His Bedroom
The man on the other end of the phone, named Peter Carter, was a known scumbag in the Aldoria area. The charges against Elizabeth before and after her imprisonment were all orchestrated by Peter. The Guise family had collaborated with Peter more than once.
This time, Clara decided to do something big.
Originally, on the eve of Clara's marriage to Alexander, the Guise family did not plan to kill Elizabeth. They wanted to avoid causing a scene that could disrupt the wedding, and Clara wanted to personally tell Elizabeth that all the happiness she had now came at the cost of Elizabeth's virginity.
She wanted to Elizabeth to lose her mind in anger.
However, Clara couldn't care less now.
She wanted Elizabeth to die immediately.
However, Peter's asking price was five million dollars.
Clara was shocked. She scoffed, "Peter! Your asking price is too high, isn't it?"
Peter, however, laughed sinisterly. He explained, "I know who you want me to deal with. Not only will I handle her cleanly for you, but I'll also make sure she suffers greatly. Only then can your hatred be truly satisfied, right? And if you want, you can watch me torture her in person. Don't you think this price is worth it?"
Clara agreed on the spot, "Fine! Five million dollars it is!"
Although this amount was not a small sum for the Guise family, Clara thought that as soon as she married Alexander and become the mistress of the Windsor family, five million dollars would just be chump change for her.
After making arrangements with Peter, Clara sneered to herself, "Elizabeth! Everything that should have been yours is mine, mine! And now that you've completed your task, you should go to hell, die!"
Clara glanced maliciously at the Azure Palace Hotel and quickly left. At the Azure Palace Hotel, Elizabeth was pushing Esme's wheelchair out the door.
"Mom, can you come home to stay today?" Elizabeth asked.
Knowing it was impossible, Elizabeth still had to ask.
Esme's illness was so severe that even attending the wedding required the accompaniment of medical staff, and the doctor only allowed her to be out for three hours. After three hours, she had to return to the hospital immediately.
Esme shook her head reluctantly with a smile. She chided gently, "Silly girl, today is your first day of marriage with Alexander. You should spend some quality time together as a couple.. How can I interfere with you young ones? I'll go back to the hospital with the medical staff. You and Alexander should go home."
"Okay, Mom," Elizabeth replied as she watched Esme get into the escort car and watched it drive away. When she turned around, Alexander was nowhere to be seen.
Elizabeth couldn't help but smile bitterly.
She and Alexander were just in a transactional relationship after all.
He was fulfilling his filial duty.
And for her, Esme was the only warmth in her life.
No matter how much Alexander misunderstood her, how harsh or cold he was, she would accompany Esme through the last stages of her life.
Elizabeth, dragging her long wedding dress, walked through the hall towards the dressing room, with a group of waiters giving her strange looks. Elizabeth rushed to the dressing room but did not see the clothes she had changed out of.
A waiter came over and asked her, "Miss, what are you looking for?"
"Have you seen my clothes?" Elizabeth asked.
"What?" the waiter gasped.
The waiter explained, "The black skirt and white shirt were quite dirty. We thought it was trash and threw it away."
Elizabeth was silent.
Without those casual clothes, how could she go out and take the bus?
Was she supposed to take the bus in her wedding dress and crystal high heels?
Elizabeth took out her phone and called Alexander, but he didn't answer the call.
Elizabeth, in her wedding dress, sat alone in the hall, not knowing where to go.
An hour ago, she was still the beautiful bride everyone envied. But now, like Clara, she had become the butt of jokes in this restaurant.
Elizabeth picked up her phone and texted Alexander.
Elizabeth: [Are you not planning to let me return to your place? Please let me know.]
Alexander did not reply.
Elizabeth waited in the hotel for two hours.
It was getting late, and it seemed she really had to take the bus back to Alexander's place in her wedding dress. Just as she was about to get up, a polite voice called out. "Miss Spencer, Mr. Windsor had to leave for something. I'm here to take you back."
Seeing Alexander's assistant, Gavin arrive, Elizabeth finally felt relieved and said, "Okay."
Elizabeth returned to Alexander's place. The living room was quiet, and Alexander was probably already asleep.
Elizabeth was about to go to her bedroom to change out of her wedding dress when she suddenly saw the bracelet Esme had forced onto her wrist.
This bracelet must be valuable, right? Elizabeth wouldn't naively think that Alexander would allow her to keep this bracelet. She took it off and stood outside Alexander's bedroom door, knocking. There was no response.
She knocked again, and the door slowly opened.
Elizabeth peeked inside; Alexander was not in the bedroom.
So he hadn't come back yet.
Elizabeth guessed that Alexander was probably at the Guise Mansion comforting Clara. She was about to turn and leave but thought that such a valuable bracelet should be returned to him for safekeeping. She walked into the room and placed the bracelet on Alexander's bedside table. As she turned to leave, she found the door wouldn't open.
Her heart skipped a beat in panic.
Elizabeth tilted her head to study the hidden lock on the door handle but couldn't find it.
The door looked like any ordinary door, and the handle had no hidden lock, so why wouldn't it open?
She pushed, pulled, and pressed the handle hard, but nothing worked.
In the end, Elizabeth was sweating but still couldn't open the door.
She had no choice but to return to Alexander's bedside table, hoping to find a key or a card in the drawer. As she opened the drawer, a bright knife suddenly shot out, aiming straight at her.
Elizabeth was terrified.
Fortunately, the knife only brushed against her and then retracted automatically.
The knife embedded itself back into the wall, with a line of text above it.
Elizabeth looked closely and saw it read: [The first time is just a scare. If you dare touch anything in this room again, you will be killed by the knife.]
Elizabeth broke out in a cold sweat, barely able to stand. She was so frightened that she almost touched the bed but quickly pulled her hand back.
She didn't dare touch anything and just curled up in the corner by the door.
She thought she was doomed.
Even if the hidden weapons in Alexander's room didn't kill her, Alexander wouldn't spare her when he returned.
Elizabeth curled up in the corner, hugging her knees, and fell asleep unknowingly.
When Alexander returned late that night, he immediately noticed someone had tampered with his door. He pushed it open cautiously and saw Elizabeth curled up in the corner.
