Chapter 13 Encountering Clara at the Engagement Party Entrance

Elizabeth's bedroom was a mess.

Upon entering, there was an open plastic bag, like a street vendor's stall, with clothes scattered inside and on the bed. Alexander took a closer look; the clothes were either extremely cheap or worn out like rags.

With the room in such disarray, could it be that Elizabeth had taken his fifty thousand dollars to run away?

There was no emotion in Alexander's eyes. He closed the door, picked up his car keys, and drove straight to the hospital where Esme was.

Elizabeth was not at the hospital.

Alexander took out his phone and dialed Elizabeth's number.

He could tolerate Elizabeth deceiving him, but deceiving Esme, who only had two months left to live, was definite out of the question!

Even if he had to search all of Aldoria, he would find Elizabeth!

However, the phone rang only once before Elizabeth answered.

Her tone was slightly agitated as she spoke to him, "Mr. Windsor, I haven't been to Aunt Esme's today. I'm out dealing with something. Give me a little more time, and I'll be back soon."

"Where are you?" Alexander asked, suppressing his anger.

"I'm... at a construction site in the southwest of Aldoria. I'm..." Elizabeth's words were cut off by Alexander.

Alexander said impatiently, "Get to the Azure Palace Hotel near the hospital within two hours. Elizabeth! Don't think that just because I gave you fifty thousand dollars, I'm soft-hearted! Let me repeat, during the term of our contract, your primary task is to make my mother happy! Otherwise..."

"Azure Palace Hotel, right? I'll be there in two hours!" Elizabeth immediately hung up.

She was at a construction site inspecting the thickness of steel bars, it was the final task for the company she was applying to.

Elizabeth had stayed up drawing until three in the morning and had only slept for two hours before getting up to find something decent to wear. She couldn't find anything remotely presentable, so she settled on a worn out black skirt and a white blouse, paired with high heels, and left early.

Elizabeth walked three miles before taking a direct bus to the location of the job interview.

When she arrived at the company, the recruiter looked at Elizabeth's outfit with suspicion, and remarked snidely, "Miss Spencer, are you here to apply as a designer or a street cleaner?"

Elizabeth blushed slightly.

Without explaining, she took a stack of drawings from her bag and handed them to the recruiter. Elizabeth informed, "These are all hand-drawn by me, with annotations on the side, including the type of steel bars used for different building types and load capacities."

The recruiter was stunned.

After a moment, he said, "I must say, you're very talented."

Elizabeth was overjoyed. She replied, "Thank you, thank you so much!"

"However, we still need to test your on-site skills. If you pass the on-site test, you'll be hired," the recruiter said.

"Sure!" Elizabeth immediately followed the recruiter to the construction site.

Just as Elizabeth finished the on-site test, Alexander's call came in.

Not wanting to waste time and worried about Esme, she hurriedly hung up.

As she was about to leave, Caleb Hernandez, the recruiter, suddenly called out to her, "Elizabeth, can you help me with something?"

Elizabeth stopped and asked, "What do you need, Mr. Hernandez?"

"Help move these small hollow bricks over there," Caleb said nonchalantly.

Afraid of losing the job she had just found, Elizabeth nodded and said, "Okay."

Elizabeth's slender figure moved back and forth carrying the hollow bricks, catching the attention of a man in a sports car by the roadside.

"Those shabby clothes and skirt, short hair without bangs, no makeup, and a cold, plain face. This girl looks like she suppresses her desires to a cruel extent. She probably hasn't even had sex with a man yet. Samuel, what do you think her reaction would be if I slept with her? I bet it would be wild!" Owen Tudor said to Samuel Bell with a playful grin.

Samuel replied irritably, "Owen, can you even count the number of girls you've slept with? This girl looks conservative. Aren't you afraid you won't be able to shake her off?"

"I've never met a woman I couldn't shake off!" Owen scoffed, glancing at Elizabeth.

A hundred or so hollow bricks weren't much, but Elizabeth was pregnant and wearing high heels. She didn't dare carry too many at once, so it took her half an hour to finish. It left her not too tired but her heels were sore.

After moving the bricks, Elizabeth limped to the roadside to wait for the bus.

She waited for over ten minutes.

Seeing that an hour had passed, Elizabeth began to get anxious. A silver-gray sports car stopped in front of her. "Miss, are you heading to the city? I can give you a ride."

Elizabeth didn't respond or look at Owen in the car.

She was very cautious around strangers.

"I'm the son of the owner of this real estate development company," Owen said, then called out to Caleb in the distance, "Caleb, come here!"

Caleb came over, nodding and bowing. He asked, "Mr. Tudor, what can I do for you?"

"Is this the new employee?" Owen asked.

Caleb replied, "Yes, Mr. Tudor."

"It's hard to catch a bus here. I'm heading back, so I'll give this lady a ride," Owen said, looking at Elizabeth again.

"Elizabeth, thank Mr. Tudor," Caleb reminded her.

Elizabeth bit her lip and said, "Thank you."

The car drove towards the city.

Elizabeth remained silent, looking out the window.

"They're using you as free labor," Owen suddenly said.

"What?" Elizabeth asked.

"Do you know why Caleb had you move bricks? It's because your job requires you to both draw and move bricks," Owen said, observing Elizabeth's reaction through the rearview mirror.

Elizabeth's face remained impassive.

It was as if she already knew the nature of her job.

"Do you still want this job?" Owen asked.

Elizabeth simply replied, "Yes."

Owen fell silent.

No woman around him had ever not tried to please him, but this shabby and plain country girl couldn't be bothered to talk to him.

Owen couldn't help but sneer inwardly, 'Sooner or later, I'll get you!'

As for Elizabeth's coldness and plainness, that would be decided in bed!

"Elizabeth, where are you headed? I'll be a good person and take you all the way," Owen asked.

"Azure Palace Hotel, do you know it?" Elizabeth asked. She didn't know why Alexander wanted her to go to the Azure Palace Hotel, but she was sure that was the address.

Owen didn't know either but his car had a GPS.

After setting the navigation, they drove for about an hour before arriving at the Azure Palace Hotel.

Elizabeth was sweating with anxiety. As soon as the car stopped, she got out without saying thank you and ran towards the restaurant entrance.

"Elizabeth! What are you doing here!" Clara exclaimed angrily, dressed in an engagement gown, blocked the entrance, glaring at her.
