Chapter 175 Is He Really That Unwelcome?
Elizabeth was taken aback by Alexander's question.
A question out of nowhere!
She asked casually, "What bracelet? You've only given me clothes these past few days, no jewelry."
Was Alexander trying to frame her?
She hadn't taken any bracelet from him!
Alexander's tone was slightly cold, "I'm asking about the bracelet from six years ago!"
Elizabeth fell silent.
The bracelet from six years ago, she had placed it next to Esme's urn before she left Sunwillow City, wanting it to represent her, to stay by Esme's side. It was the only thing she could leave for Esme.
After a pause, Elizabeth said, "I had forgotten about that bracelet until you mentioned it. Six years ago, I tried to return it to you, but you didn't want it. You told me that since Esme gave it to me, I should keep it. Why are you asking about it now? Do you want it back?"
Alexander was momentarily at a loss for words.
But he was holding back a surge of anger!
Elizabeth always liked to misunderstand him.
Six years ago, he said it was hers, so he wouldn't ask for it back. It was a gift from Esme to her, and he had no right to take it back. He was asking about the bracelet to tell her that it was invaluable, far beyond the compensation he had given her in the contract back then.
He just wanted to know if the bracelet was still with her.
If not, where had she sold it?
No matter where the bracelet ended up, he would find a way to redeem it. Alexander couldn't let Esme's keepsake be lost.
After a while, Alexander asked irritably, "Taking it back isn't out of the question! Let's see how you behave. If you do well, I won't take the bracelet back. But it's my mother's keepsake, I need to know if you still have it or if you've sold it for cash!"
Elizabeth was silent.
After a pause, she said in a rather desolate tone, "What do you think of me? Aunt Esme was my only friend and family in this world. She was like a mother to me. I could sell anything but her bracelet. Don't worry, I didn't sell it!"
Alexander said, "It's best if you didn't sell it."
Elizabeth was silent. Just as she was about to hang up the phone, she heard Alice's innocent and excited voice on the other end, "Mom, I got rid of two women for you today."
Elizabeth was so shocked, her voice changing, "Alice, where are you? What did you say? What do you mean you got rid of two women for me?"
Alice said proudly, "Mom, I saw two women at Great-Grandpa's house today who wanted to be my stepmom, so I came up with a little plan to make them fight. They looked so ugly pulling each other's hair, and Gavin took pictures for me. I'll show you when I get home. No one can be my stepmom! Anyone who tries to take Dad from you, I'll get rid of them all!"
Elizabeth was silent.
Oh my God!
"Alice, what have you done!" Elizabeth asked angrily over the phone.
Alice was always fearless. In the two years she had been in preschool in Collinsport, she had gotten into countless fights with little boys.
Of course, every time Alice fought with other kids, it was either because they made fun of her for not having a dad or because they insulted Elizabeth in front of her.
Every time, she bravely defeated the other kids.
She used to fight with preschoolers, but today, escalating to provoking adults?
Elizabeth broke out in a cold sweat.
The adult world was so complicated. How could a five-year-old like Alice understand it? No matter how fierce and brave she was, she couldn't outsmart adults.
Elizabeth was mainly worried about Alice's safety.
She scolded over the phone, "Alice! If you play pranks on adults again, I don't want you anymore!"
Alice was silent. She pouted, about to cry. Sniffling, she said tearfully, "Mom, I just wanted to help you."
"I don't need your help. I don't want you causing trouble outside!" Elizabeth said sternly. She had always been strict with Alice, believing that she needed to be disciplined from a young age.
"But Mom, those two women wanted to take..." Alice explained.
"I'm telling you again that I don't need it! Alice, you have to listen, okay? Don't provoke adults again. If I find out you did something like this again, I will..." Elizabeth said.
"She is my daughter! You can't threaten her like that!" Elizabeth's words were cut off by Alexander's angry voice over the phone.
Elizabeth was silent.
Alexander's tone was icy, "What do you mean don't provoke adults? The two women Alice provoked today were in the wrong first! Do you want Alice to suffer injustice? How are you educating my daughter!"
What angered Alexander more was that Elizabeth said she didn't need it, knowing that Alice was trying to help her get rid of the women around him. She still said she didn't need it.
Was he really that unlikable to Elizabeth!
Just as Elizabeth was about to say something, Alexander had already hung up the phone.
Elizabeth was anxious, worried about Alice causing trouble at the Windsor Manor. Now hearing the news made her even more anxious that Alice had offended two women there.
She had originally planned to have dinner outside after leaving the company, then going to the library to buy some books on architecture and doing some research to prepare for her future work.
But now, she just wanted to get home quickly.
She entered the elevator, pressing the button, and staring at the numbers without stopping. When she reached the first floor, as soon as the elevator stopped, she rushed out, bumping into someone entering the elevator.
The person was holding a stack of documents, which scattered all over the elevator when Elizabeth bumped into him. Elizabeth immediately said repeatedly, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
As she apologized, she bent down to pick up the fallen documents.
While she was picking up the papers, the man she had bumped into also bent down, saying gently, "It's okay. I'll pick them up." He squatted down, helping Elizabeth gather the documents.
Elizabeth was quick, handing the picked-up documents to the man, who took them and glanced at Elizabeth.
The man was stunned, calling out, "Elizabeth!"
Elizabeth looked up sharply, also stunned.
