Chapter 52 Embracing Her
Elizabeth remained silent, she was a bit startled and needed to compose herself.
Because Alexander enjoyed his solitude. Elizabeth also ate all her meals outside, so the housekeeper, Elara Reed, didn't come often.
She genuinely didn't expect Elara to be waiting for her in the dining room.
Elara, smiling, carried a pot to the kitchen and said, "This chicken is from the countryside, I've been stewing it all afternoon. It will be cooked soon, you should try it, it's really fresh and scrumptious."
Elizabeth smiled lightly, and replied, "Mm, thank you, Elara."
She hadn't had homemade food in a long time, and the native chicken would be good for the baby in her belly.
She was indeed hungry.
Earlier, after arguing with Oliver, Elizabeth didn't feel her hunger.
Dinner was both filling and delicious. Elizabeth's originally sad and lonely mood improved because of the meal and Alexander's attitude towards her during the day. She hadn't slept well in a long time, but that night, Elizabeth slept soundly.
The next morning, Elizabeth didn't dare to come out, afraid of encountering Alexander. Previously, their mutual indifference made it easier for her to interact with him; Alexander ignored her, and she didn't have to greet him with a smile every day.
Now that Alexander's attitude had changed, she didn't know how to greet him.
However, no matter how hesitant, Elizabeth still had to get up, wash up, go to the hospital, and then go to work.
Coming out of the bedroom, the living room was quiet. She glanced around and saw no one.
Alexander must have already left.
Although he was the highest authority in the Windsor Group, he was never idle.
That morning, Elizabeth followed her usual routine; first she visited Esme at the hospital, then went to work. Because Sawyer wasn't there and had praised Elizabeth in front of all her colleagues the previous day, her days at the office were not easy.
Throughout the day, besides doing miscellaneous tasks, she also had to run errands for her colleagues.
When her colleagues once again asked Elizabeth to head to the construction site, she didn't call Owen.
She wasn't the type to take the initiative or advantage, especially not with someone as socially different from her as Owen.
Even though Owen's words were very charming.
He said his piece, but Elizabeth had her own principles that she followed as often as she could.
However, she didn't encounter Owen at the bus stop today.
Waiting for the bus took much longer than Owen's private car. That afternoon, after returning from the construction site, Elizabeth arrived at Esme's hospital nearly an hour later than the previous day.
She thought she wouldn't see Alexander today, but as soon as she walked in, there he was.
"Elizabeth, you're finally here." As soon as Esme saw Elizabeth, she grabbed her hand affectionate;y. She asked with concern,"Alexander has been waiting for you for a long time. Did you work overtime yesterday and couldn't buy clothes?"
Elizabeth nodded in affirmation. She shyly replied, "Yes, Mom, something came up at work."
"Then go now. The earlier you go, the more choices you'll have. Don't forget to have a meal together before shopping," Esme urged.
In front of Alexander and Elizabeth, Esme never mentioned her illness, always urging them to be together.
"Mom, we're leaving now. You take care." Elizabeth reluctantly said goodbye to Esme.
Outside, she couldn't help but look up at Alexander.
Alexander's attitude towards her had taken a complete 180-degree turn in the past two days. She thought he was just in a good mood yesterday, but today he still wanted to buy new clothes for her.
Elizabeth felt inexplicably touched.
In the car, she didn't know what to say.
Fortunately, Alexander was also a man of few words, and neither of them spoke.
Unlike with Owen, where Elizabeth also didn't speak, but Owen would make various small noises to distract her.
But with Alexander it was different.
She already had a calm demeanor, yet his was even calmer..
His eyes didn't even glance at her, as if she wasn't there.
Thus, Elizabeth's hands unconsciously fidgeted at the hem of her clothes. At that moment, Alexander suddenly turned to her and said, "Mind if I smoke?"
Elizabeth, startled, let go of her clothes and quickly nodded. "Go ahead."
Alexander then opened the window, took out a cigarette, and lit it.
His movements were fluid, and as he put the cigarette to his mouth and took a drag, Elizabeth noticed he didn't exhale the smoke.
Just as she was surprised, she discovered from the corner of her eyes that he was exhaling the smoke slowly through his nose, letting it drift out the window.
He was so composed and unperturbed.
It was the first time Elizabeth had seen a man smoke with such hidden dominance, exuding the aura of a mature man.
Elizabeth stared for a few seconds.
Suddenly, she blushed after catching herself looking at him.
A slight tobacco scent wafted into Elizabeth's nose, and she instinctively coughed lightly.
Alexander immediately stubbed out the cigarette, which was still more than half left, and opened the window fully.
At that moment, Gavin frequently checked the rearview mirror. Alexander noticed it, frowned, and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Mr. Windsor, it seems like someone is following us?" Gavin, a former special forces operative with exceptional skills, was Alexander's assistant and driver on the surface, but actually his bodyguard.
"Lead them to a less populated area." Alexander calmly decided.
"Yes, sir!" Gavin swerved the car into a fast lane, accelerating out of the city and onto a secluded road.
Alexander glanced at Elizabeth beside him. Her eyes were surprisingly calm.
"Aren't you afraid?" he asked.
She shook her head, and replied "No."
After a pause, she explained calmly, "I've been to prison. It was pretty harsh there, and I've seen it all."
Alexander then told Gavin, "Find out who they are. If necessary, deal with them on the spot."
"Understood, Mr. Windsor!" Gavin replied.
Alexander had only been in his position for a little over a month, and those who wanted to overthrow him were numerous, both openly and secretly. If they stayed hidden, he would let them be.
But if they dared to follow him from the hospital in broad daylight, he wouldn't show them mercy.
The car stopped on a quiet mountain road.
Gavin got out.
Through the rearview mirror, Elizabeth saw at least two cars behind them, and seven burly men got out, surrounding Gavin.
However, in just ten minutes, all of them were knocked down.
Gavin got back in the car. He reported to Alexander, "Mr. Windsor, it's done."
"Let's go back," Alexander said briefly. Just as he finished speaking, a man suddenly clung to the car door. The window, which had been opened earlier to let out the smoke, was still down, and the man's half-bloody face appeared.
Elizabeth, who had just said she wasn't scared, screamed in fright.
Alexander immediately pulled Elizabeth into his arms.
