Chapter 298 New Friends
A week had passed without seeing Harper who had lost a lot of weight.
Elizabeth didn't have much affection for Harper. So when she saw the pitiful state Harper was in, she wasn't too surprised or sympathetic.
But Julia rushed over and grabbed Harper's arm, asking, "Harper, what's going on? I haven't seen you for just two days, and you look like you've lost a lot of weight!"
Harper replied in a low voice, "I'm fine."
Julia asked again, "Do you have something to do here?"
Harper squinted, with a bit of eye gunk squeezing out from her eyes, indicating she was stressed. She wiped it away haphazardly, asking, "Julia, can you lend me a hundred dollars? I haven't eaten in two days."
"What?" Julia looked at Harper in shock, asking, "What's going on? Why aren't you eating at home? Where are your parents? Are they not home?"
Harper said bitterly, "They kicked me out."
Julia asked, "Why?"
Harper bit her lip. "Because..."
She glanced at Elizabeth and then fell silent. After a pause, she respectfully bowed to Elizabeth. "Hello, Mrs. Windsor."
Elizabeth remained silent.
Julia, being impatient, said, "Spit it out! You're practically a homeless person now; what are you hiding? If you don't tell me, I won't lend you a hundred dollars."
Julia had never had any dealings with Harper before.
She didn't think much of Harper either.
But after Harper stopped participating in the plot against Elizabeth, Julia realized Harper was actually quite naive.
She wasn't inherently bad.
And Julia also found that if she cursed at Harper, Harper wouldn't hold it against her. She was a particularly careless and soft-tempered woman.
To be honest, Julia kind of liked Harper.
Seeing Julia scold her, Harper said, "Because I didn't help Elodie disfigure Mrs. Windsor as she wanted, my parents scolded me harshly. Yesterday, after Elodie was kicked out by Mr. Windsor and her bank card was frozen, my parents decided to cut ties with me. They kicked me out yesterday afternoon and didn't even let me take my clothes. I left in such a hurry that I didn't bring my phone or any money. I don't usually have many friends. Julia, I didn't eat yesterday, and I'm really hungry now. Can you lend me a hundred dollars so I can get something to eat?"
At this point, Harper didn't have any high hopes, just wanting a full meal.
Julia was incredibly shocked, asking, "Harper, your parents kicked you out because of Elodie?"
Harper nodded sadly, then she started to cry.
She didn't understand why her parents would abandon their own daughter for Elodie. Without her phone, Harper couldn't even communicate with her parents.
No matter how much she knocked on the door last night, her parents wouldn't open it.
They were really heartless.
"I'll lend it to you," Elizabeth said.
Harper was so scared she stepped back repeatedly. "No, no need, Mrs. Windsor. I'm already grateful that you spared my life."
Elizabeth said calmly, "I used to go hungry too, so I know how hard it is. Julia and I are going to eat; why don't you join us?"
Harper was silent, stunned for a long time.
Then she looked at Julia.
Julia nodded. "Elizabeth is kind and gentle, really nice."
Harper lowered her head and said apologetically, "Mrs. Windsor, I was really blind before. I'm sorry."
"Let's go," Elizabeth said.
Harper followed Julia and Elizabeth, feeling very self-conscious.
Julia wanted to eat at a buffet that cost $999 per person, and Elizabeth really took them there.
Three people meant three thousand dollars.
The buffet was truly large.
The variety of food was overwhelming.
Elizabeth, Julia, and Harper had never been to such a high-end restaurant.
Julia and Harper were stunned, and Elizabeth remained calm.
Elizabeth wasn't particular about food; being able to eat her fill was good enough for her. She didn't have much longing for such high-end restaurants.
However, seeing Harper and Julia excitedly picking out food made her feel happy.
She didn't have friends.
And she wasn't good at making friends.
But she longed for friends.
She was always sincere with people.
Just like now, as long as Julia and Harper were happy, she felt it was worth spending any amount of money.
When Harper and Julia had picked their food and returned to their seats, Harper saw a big bowl of stew.
She couldn't help but exclaim, almost drooling.
Elizabeth smiled and said, "Go ahead and eat."
"Mrs. Windsor, how did you know I love stew?" Harper asked in disbelief.
Elizabeth shrugged, saying, "The first time we argued, you were so stressed, but you still managed to eat a big bowl of stew. So I always remembered. But you haven't eaten all day, try to eat a little less and start with some mild soup."
Hearing Elizabeth say this, Harper suddenly started crying.
Elizabeth immediately fell silent.
Did she say something wrong?
She was never good with words, having always been more about actions than words.
Harper cried, "Mrs. Windsor, I was really awful before. I never realized how kind and good you are. Now I finally understand why Owen likes you so much. He's always protecting you with his life because you once saved him at all costs. Mrs. Windsor, from now on, I'll protect you with my life too."
Elizabeth looked awkwardly at Julia.
She was more familiar with Julia.
She didn't know what to say now.
Julia gave Harper a light punch, saying, "Harper! Elizabeth has Mr. Windsor to protect her; she doesn't need you to protect her with your life. From now on, we're all friends, so stop crying. Don't drop snot into the stew! If you can't eat it, neither can we!"
Harper smiled sheepishly.
Elizabeth also smiled.
"Eat up!" Julia ordered.
"Okay!" Harper immediately picked up her utensils and started eating the stew, taking big, satisfying bites.
Elizabeth and Julia also felt more appetized watching her.
As they were eating, Harper suddenly put down her utensils and took something out of her bag, handing it to Elizabeth.
"Mrs. Windsor, this is for you," Harper said respectfully.
Elizabeth was taken aback, asking, "What is this?"
