Chapter 40 The Games of the Wealthy

Elizabeth didn't recognize Elodie, but she did recognize Simon.

"Excuse me," Elizabeth said politely.

Simon and Elodie were blocking her way. She sidestepped them and approached the counter, saying, "I'm sorry. Your boss has called me three times. I'm here to pay for the camera today."

The cashier immediately asked, "Miss, what's your last name?"

"Spencer. I rented a digital camera worth $1,500 from you four days ago. I'm here to pay for it today," Elizabeth said again.

"Miss Spencer!" The cashier's eyes lit up, and informed, "Please wait a moment, our boss is looking for you."

Elizabeth remained silent, contemplating.

She knew she was three days late returning the camera and wondered if the owner would accuse her of breaching the contract.

But it didn't matter; she had brought $3,000 with her today. That should be enough to pay everything off, right?

Thinking about the $3,000, Elizabeth felt grateful to Owen once again.

Owen had given her a small stack of money, which she later counted to be over $3,000.

She stood quietly in the rental company's lobby, waiting for the owner to come over. In front of her, Simon and Elodie were both looking at Elizabeth.

Elizabeth pretended not to know Simon.

In reality, she didn't.

They had only met once at The Windsor Manor, where Simon had exchanged numbers with her. She was so desperate to ask a stranger for money.

It was no wonder he was wary of her.

Now, pretending not to know each other was fine.

Unexpectedly, Simon approached Elizabeth first and said politely, "Miss Spencer, don't you recognize me?"

Elizabeth gave a faint smile, her expression distant and indifferent. "I'm sorry, Mr. Jones. I was too forward at The Windsor Manor party that day. I apologize."

Simon was about to say something when a man in his thirties came out from behind the counter. As soon as he saw Elizabeth, he exclaimed, "Miss Spencer, you're finally here."

Elizabeth quickly turned around and said, "I'm sorry, sir. I must apologize. I rented your digital camera that day, but I accidentally lost it. The camera had a $1,500 deposit, and you greatly trusted me. But I only managed to gather the money for the camera after three days. I know I'm three days late. Here, I'll pay you the full amount for the camera, and you can deduct the rental fee as you see fit. Is $3,000 okay? I'm sorry."

Elizabeth didn't know what else to say.

She had delayed twice on the phone, hanging up immediately.

Now, she could only let the owner blame her.

"Miss Spencer, you hung up on me several times without listening. Do you know why I called you? You rented a $1,500 digital camera, but you left without taking it," the rental center owner said with a smile.

Elizabeth was stunned. "What did you say?" she said incredulously.

"I called you twice to tell you this, but you hung up each time before I could finish explaining."

"Are you saying the camera wasn't lost, and I just didn't take it?" Elizabeth repeated. She couldn't believe it, her eyes welled up with tears.

Then Elizabeth smiled genuinely.

She thought in her heart, 'Great.Since the camera wasn't lost, I didn't owe Owen any money.'

"So, I don't have to pay?" Elizabeth asked happily.

"Not even the rental fee," the rental center owner said.

"Thank you. Can I leave now?" Elizabeth asked, looking relieved.

"Yes, Miss Spencer," the owner of the rental center replied with a smile.

Elizabeth let out a sigh of relief and walked out of the rental company with ease.

"Miss Spencer, please wait," Simon called out from behind.

At that moment, Simon seemed to understand why Elizabeth had asked to borrow $2,000 at the Windsor family party.

She thought she had lost the camera and needed to pay for it.

Two thousand dollars was nothing to Simon, not even enough for a meal.

"What's wrong, Mr. Jones?" Elizabeth asked.

"Do you still need money?" Simon didn't know what else to say.

"Didn't you see? I don't need it anymore," Elizabeth said with a smile.

Simon awkwardly explained, "I thought you were just trying to scam money from me, so when you called me the other day, I..."

"It's okay, Mr. Jones. We didn't know each other. It was my fault for being too forward. Anyone would be frightened if a stranger asked for money after just one conversation. I regretted calling you later, realizing it was unfair to you. We met at a party, you were just playing along. I was too naive. Let's not meet again, Mr. Jones," with that said, Elizabeth walked away quickly.

"So similar," Simon said from behind.

"What do you mean, Simon?" Elodie asked, coming up to him.

"Nothing. Elodie, you go back first!" Simon said, then quickly went to get his car and followed the bus Elizabeth had taken.

He followed her until she got off at a private hospital.

Elizabeth had planned to go straight back to work, but with the unexpected $3,000 she had, she felt good. She decided to use her lunch break to buy some delicious food for Esme and eat with her before returning to work.

While buying food at the hospital entrance, Simon appeared in front of Elizabeth again.

Elizabeth was startled. She said, "Mr. Jones, you..."

"May I invite you to lunch??" Simon asked.

Elizabeth laughed at herself. Then she scoffed at him, "Is it because you realized I wasn't trying to scam you, so you think I'm worth knowing? Or, to be blunt, you think I can be your girlfriend for a few days, just for fun? And then, after a month, or a week, or even a day, you'll get tired of me, and when I call you, your secretary will say you're busy? Sorry, Mr. Jones, I don't play those games. I already apologized for asking you for money at the Windsor banquet. I shouldn't have done that. I apologize again."

With that, Elizabeth grabbed her food and left.

Simon grabbed Elizabeth's arm hastily, and insisted, "Miss Spencer, listen to me."

"Let go!" Elizabeth demanded as she looked at Simon with cold anger. "I'm not interested in your rich people's games!"

Not far away, Alexander's car was turning into the hospital. Inside, Gavin said to Alexander, "Mr. Windsor, why is Miss Spencer with Mr. Jones..."
