Chapter 268 That's Too Much

Over there, Harper spoke with a tone that carried a hint of guilt and a bit of inferiority, "Elizabeth, are you going to the banquet now?"

Elizabeth had no fondness for Harper at all, so her response was cold, "What do you want?"

Harper stammered, "I know you despise me. I was wrong before; I shouldn't have listened to Elodie and held such a grudge against you. I admit a big part of it was because I was jealous of your beauty and aloofness. I was jealous of you."

"What are you trying to say?" Elizabeth asked coldly.

"I'm sincere now; I don't want to harm you anymore," Harper mustered the courage to say.

Next to her stood Julia, who was almost frantic.

Julia was now with Harper. After harshly reprimanding Harper, she thought Harper would see her as an enemy. Unexpectedly, Harper considered her a friend.

Moreover, Harper was now willing to stop Elizabeth from attending the banquet.

Harper continued, "It's a banquet full of schemes. Elodie, Molly's sister, and everyone you've ever offended will be there. Those women usually don't get the chance, but once they do, they'll make sure to teach you a lesson. Elizabeth, don't go."

Elizabeth was silent, not having expected Harper, who used to target her relentlessly, to help her.

Elizabeth could hear the sincerity in Harper's stammering voice.

She didn't speak because she didn't understand why Harper was helping her.

Harper continued, "I used to be so vain. I thought I was somebody because the biggest shareholder, Mr. Jones, is Elodie's cousin, and he recommended me to the company. I acted like I was rich. But in reality, I'm just a poor employee. To Elodie, my parents and I are just servants. I was so foolish to be her tool. I was too naive and immature. Elizabeth, it's understandable that you don't trust me. I brought this on myself."

Elizabeth remained silent.

"By the way, your good friend Julia is with me," Harper added.

At this point, Elizabeth heard Julia's voice on the other end, "Elizabeth, I'm with Harper. We had a fight, but she finally came to her senses. She's just a poor girl pretending to be rich! But high society still sees her as poor! But now she's convinced, and you can trust her words. So, Elizabeth, can you not go to that banquet? Those women want to teach you a lesson!"

"Thank you," Elizabeth finally spoke.

She said to Julia, "Thank you, Julia. Maybe it's just my fate. My fate might have been sealed when I was twelve, or when I went to prison, or maybe I shouldn't have escaped six years ago. It's a miracle I'm still alive."

Julia was silent.

"Julia, let me speak to Harper," Elizabeth said.

Immediately, Harper's somewhat self-deprecating voice came through, "Elizabeth, I even betrayed Elodie. I'm telling you the truth; Elodie will be at the banquet today."

Elizabeth said calmly, "Thank you, Harper."

With that, she hung up the phone.

Although Harper was arrogant and domineering, it was clear from today that she wasn't inherently bad. If Julia could become good friends with Harper in the future, Elizabeth would feel a bit better.

So be it; Elizabeth didn't want to involve more innocent girls.

After hanging up, Elizabeth urged the driver to go faster.

An hour later, Elizabeth arrived at the hotel entrance.

She was here again after two days.

Two days ago, she was ostracized by a group of wealthy kindergarten parents.

And this time, what fate awaited her?

Elizabeth could already imagine that with a vicious and twisted woman like Molly present, today would be much worse than the small parents' gathering two days ago.

Elizabeth was not wrong.

As soon as she got out of the car, before she could even close the door, more than twenty reporters swarmed in from all directions.

Some held microphones, others had professional cameras, and they surrounded Elizabeth, either pointing microphones at her or snapping photos incessantly.

Elizabeth remained silent, feeling like she was the nation's top idol for a moment.

She sneered self-deprecatingly, "You must have the wrong person; I'm not the idol you all are chasing after."

"Elizabeth, right?" one of the reporters asked.

Elizabeth admitted straightforwardly, "Yes!"

"Elizabeth, how can you be so shameless?"

Elizabeth said, "I don't know."

"Elizabeth, what do you think about the photos of you being held by a man without clothes being uploaded online?"

Elizabeth said, "It's normal."

The reporter was silent, almost at a loss for words!

"Elizabeth, do you have any sense of shame?" another reporter asked more sharply.

Elizabeth said, "Does my lack of shame bother you?"

The reporter was silent.

Instantly, Elizabeth's question left the reporter speechless.

After a few seconds, another quick-witted reporter asked, "Elizabeth, your shameless behavior must have started six years ago, or even earlier. It's said that you began selling yourself in college and successfully deceived old men, right?"

Elizabeth asked, "Are you here to ask for tips?"

The reporter was silent.

Elizabeth continued, "But you're a man, so it won't help you. Unless you're a man with a woman's heart? Do you want to be treated like a woman by men?"

Reporter shouted, "Why are you insulting people indirectly? You're so uncivilized!"

Elizabeth said, "Didn't you say I have no sense of shame?"

The reporter was silent.

And so, a group of reporters followed Elizabeth, asking her all sorts of sharp, blunt, and shameless questions. They didn't even bother to address her respectfully and asked these insulting questions directly.

But they didn't expect Elizabeth to respond so fluently.

But the more she did, the more she attracted reporters. They snapped photos, capturing Elizabeth's profile.

Some quick reporters had already sent the photos to their media outlets, trying to get a scoop.

Surrounded by reporters, Elizabeth entered the hotel lobby and arrived outside the hall designated by Molly.

Molly was waiting outside for Elizabeth.

Seeing Elizabeth arrive, Molly was immediately shocked, "This is so infuriating!"
