Chapter 69 What Did You Call Me?
Owen was all decked out today, looking super serious. He was definitely in work mode. He had this measuring gadget in front of him and was totally zoned in on the numbers. Standing smack in the middle of the road, he didn't even notice Elizabeth heading straight for him.
When they collided, he shot her a cold look and said in this flat, no-nonsense tone, "Why's it always you? Can't you see I'm working here? How could you just run into me like that? So inconsiderate! I'm really good at keeping my work and personal life separate. So, in the future, when I'm working, don't try to distract me."
He wasn't joking or trying to mock her. He was just super into his work, and her bumping into him clearly ticked him off.
Elizabeth bit her lip and muttered, "I'm sorry!"
She then ducked her head and walked around him, heading towards the construction site. She had planned to tell Owen she'd be getting her paycheck soon and could finally pay back the $3,000 she owed him.
But seeing him so wrapped up in his work and looking all annoyed, she decided to keep quiet and just kept walking, looking all lonely.
It wasn't until Elizabeth was far away that Owen finally relaxed. He glanced over at Samuel in the car and called out, "Samuel, get out here!"
Samuel hopped out and walked over to Owen. "Man, you were really putting on a show back there. You looked like a legit construction engineer. How do you pull that off? You're quite the actor!"
Owen stroked his stubble and said casually, "Did you see that? The way she is now is exactly how she was the first time I saw her—restrained, aloof, pitiful, helpless. I just love her like this!"
Samuel stayed quiet for a bit, then blinked and asked, "Owen, what are you even trying to do? I still don't get it. She's Alexander's woman. Do you really want to mess with her? Aren't you afraid Alexander will come after you?"
Owen looked at Samuel, clearly annoyed. "Esme won't last more than half a month, and even during that time, she'll be out of it most of the time. Alexander doesn't need Elizabeth to comfort Esme anymore. It's been two days, and Elizabeth hasn't been able to get into Esme's room. Do you think Alexander still cares about her? She is just a tool for Alexander to comfort Esme. But she overestimated herself, even going as far as to provoke Alexander's lover."
Samuel stayed silent.
Owen smirked and raised an eyebrow. "Now it's my turn to step in. Look at her now, like a distressed little rabbit. It's kinda amusing."
"If that's the case, why were you so cold to her when she bumped into you just now?" Samuel asked, confused.
"You don't get it, I was just playing hard to get," Owen replied.
"What's the point of playing hard to get with her?" Samuel scoffed.
"That makes it all the more interesting!" Owen laughed, like Elizabeth was just a toy to him.
Samuel chuckled knowingly. "Owen, you really know how to play games."
Owen raised an eyebrow and grinned. "What can I say? This place is crawling with beautiful women. I've seen 'em all! Take Elodie, for example. Samuel, be real with me, do you dig chicks like Elodie? So pretentious, so full of herself, and untouchable. If she were really a Jones family heiress, that'd be one thing, but she's just a foster kid in the Jones family. Seeing her act all high and mighty makes me wanna puke!"
Samuel stayed quiet.
Owen spent the whole day pretending to work on the outskirts of the construction site. When the workday wrapped up, and he saw Elizabeth walking away with a bag on her back, looking all down and out, Owen kept up his act, pretending to be super focused as she passed by. A bunch of his subordinates were hanging around, acting like they needed his instructions.
As Elizabeth walked by, Owen didn't even glance at her, staying locked in on his "work." Elizabeth wanted to say something to him a few times but bit her tongue and headed straight to the bus stop.
This time, she got lucky. The bus pulled up just as she reached the stop, and she hopped on. Not long after, Owen and Samuel tailed her in their car, following the bus she was on.
Just like they thought, Elizabeth headed straight for the hospital.
By evening, Esme's hospital room was dead quiet. It was hard to tell if Esme was asleep or still out cold. Hiding outside the room, Elizabeth could only see Esme hooked up to a bunch of tubes, getting an IV.
Alexander was sitting by Esme's bedside, all suited up. He was hunched over, lying on the edge of her bed.
Seeing this, Elizabeth didn't dare go in. She couldn't bring herself to talk about the contract they had signed with Alexander.
But after not seeing Esme up close for two days, Elizabeth couldn't just leave. She stood quietly by the window outside the room, watching until a doctor came in and told Alexander, "Mr. Windsor, we really need to move Mrs. Esme Windsor to the sterile high-risk monitoring room. In her current state, her fever spikes in the middle of the night when her body is at rest. Even if you stay here overnight, it won't help. You should go home and rest. Only if you rest well can you have more energy to take care of Mrs. Esme Windsor during the day."
Hearing the doc, Alexander stood up and said in a low, raspy voice, "Alright, thanks, doc."
After that, he took one last deep look at Esme, then straightened his suit and got ready to leave.
Elizabeth, hiding outside, bolted out of the hospital. She couldn't let Alexander see her, and she didn't want him to know she had been there. As she ran like crazy, she kept glancing back to see if Alexander had noticed her.
In her rush, she bumped into someone.
Elizabeth spun around and saw she had run into an elderly man in his sixties, super overweight and looking pretty well-off.
"I'm sorry, sir, I didn't mean to," Elizabeth kept apologizing.
The old man furrowed his brows and glared at her. Then, with his chubby hands, he grabbed Elizabeth's arm and demanded, "What did you call me?"
Elizabeth struggled like mad and said, "Who are you? Let go of me!"
