Chapter 11 Elizabeth Blows Up at Alexander
"What?" Alexander thought he had misheard.
"Give me fifty thousand dollars! I promise not to bother the Guise family anymore," Elizabeth said with a calmness as if she were facing death.
Alexander laughed in exasperation.
She really knew how to take advantage of the situation.
"Weren't you the one who promised me yesterday that you wouldn't ask me for money again?" he asked mockingly.
"Do you think a woman like me, with a tarnished reputation and playing hard to get with you multiple times, has any integrity or dignity left?" she asked with a sarcastic smile.
Alexander fell silent.
He almost forgot how shameless she could be.
He sneered at her coldly, "Do you think that if I can get you out of jail, I can't put you back in?"
Elizabeth fell silent.
She knew that playing hardball with Alexander would only lead to her losing.
But she had to find a way to get fifty thousand dollars; she couldn't let her mother's grave be dug up.
"Yes," Elizabeth lowered her eyes and smiled sadly as she said, "Crushing me is as easy as crushing an ant."
With that, she opened the door and walked out.
Alexander called after her, "Where are you going?"
"You have no right to ask," she said.
Alexander forced his way in front of her. He warned her, "I almost forgot, Clara said you were in the prostitution business? I warn you, during our contract period, don't engage in any filthy transactions, or else..."
"Or else?" Elizabeth suddenly exploded. "Do I owe you, Alexander? You said I was scheming to get money from you, did I come to you on my own?
"I only agreed to the deal with you to repay the kindness your mother showed me in prison. That's all!
"I just got out of prison, finally found a job that was about to pay me, but you ruined it.
"I don't even have money for the bus, how am I supposed to live?
"At the Guise Mansion, you heard it too. They asked me to stay even though I didn't want to bother them. They supported me financially when I was younger, and now they want me to repay them with fifty thousand dollars within one day! If I don't, my mother's grave will be dug up! Tell me, how am I supposed to repay that?"
Alexander was shocked.
She had always been so calm.
He didn't expect her to suddenly explode like that.
After yelling, Elizabeth mocked herself, "Why am I telling you about it? To gain sympathy? In your eyes, I'm just an ant you can step on at will. Trying to gain sympathy from you would only make things worse. How stupid of me!"
With that, she ran back to her room, quickly packed her clothes into a plastic bag, and walked out.
Then Elizabeth said calmly, "Mr. Windsor, I want to terminate our deal."
"Unilaterally breaking the contract?" Alexander questioned.
She replied, "I know I have to pay a penalty. I don't have the money. Please give me a week, and I'll come back and let you do whatever you want with me."
Alexander asked with interest, "What are you going to do in that week?"
Elizabeth explained, "First, I'll go to the black market to sell blood, get enough money. Then go back home to pay respects to my mom. After that, you can do whatever you want with me. If you're worried, you can have someone follow me."
With that, Elizabeth opened the door to leave.
But Alexander grabbed her arm.
Alexander handed her a thick envelope, his voice as cold as ever, "Fifty thousand dollars. Don't ask again! Remember to take care of my mother as usual tomorrow."
She stared at him, stunned, unable to react for a long time.
Then Elizabeth took the money, turned, and ran back to her room. As soon as the door closed, she burst into tears.
Her plastic bag was left at Alexander's feet. He kicked it, revealing two pieces of cheap clothing, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a bar of soap, and thirty dollars in change.
Elizabeth cried all night, and the next day her eyes were red and swollen.
Fortunately, Alexander had left early for the office and didn't see her. Elizabeth tidied herself up and went to the hospital to visit Esme.
"Elizabeth, why are your eyes so red?" Esme asked, concerned.
"Nothing, Mom," Elizabeth's eyes reddened again as he replied..
Not wanting Esme to see her tears, she turned and ran out.
Esme immediately called Alexander and questioned, "Alexander, you're always busy with work. Every morning, it's Elizabeth who keeps me company. She's such a good girl. I don't know how much longer I can live, and I hope to attend your wedding soon."
Esme thought Elizabeth was sad because there hadn't been a wedding.
Which girl didn't dream of wearing a wedding dress and walking down the aisle?
Like her, living to the end of her life without ever having the chance to wear a wedding dress?
She wanted to make up for her own regrets through Elizabeth.
"Mom, you're sick. It's not appropriate for Elizabeth and me to have a grand wedding," Alexander tried to comfort Esme.
Esme insisted earnestly, "Alexander, it doesn't need to be grand. Just having a wedding is enough."
Alexander fell silent.
After a long pause, he replied in a deep voice, "As you wish."
Esme immediately felt relieved. She remarked, "Instead of picking a date, why not have the wedding soon? The day after tomorrow is a good day. A small wedding, just notify the wedding planner and the hotel, right?"
The day after tomorrow...
For ordinary people, it might be too rushed. But for Alexander, if he really wanted to have a wedding, it could be done even by tomorrow.
"Okay, Mom," Alexander replied.
Having received the money, Elizabeth managed to compose herself and returned. She smiled at Esme, and said, "Mom, I've had a bit of a cold these past two days, my eyes and nose keep running. I'm sorry to make you worry."
"Elizabeth, I have a surprise for you," Esme said, holding Elizabeth's hand.
"What surprise?" Elizabeth asked impulsively.
"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise," Esme teased, then urged her, "You shouldn't always stay with me. Get some beauty treatments and buy yourself some new clothes these days. Go on."
Knowing she had no money, Elizabeth didn't say anything.
But it was a good opportunity for her to go out and find a job. She needed to become self-sufficient as soon as possible.
In the afternoon, Elizabeth went to the Guise Mansion to repay the money.
While waiting for the bus, Elizabeth overheard some people talking excitedly, "It's so easy for the rich to get things done. They can organize a wedding in just one day."
Someone asked, "Is it that hard? Everything is ready-made now. Organizing a wedding isn't difficult."
Another chimed in, "It must be an engagement, right? For a family like the Windsors, how could a wedding be so low-key?"
Somebody argued, "I think it's an engagement party, not a wedding. If it were a wedding, it would be much grander."
One added, "It's good to be rich. Even an engagement party, such a big event, can be prepared in one day."
Several people waiting for the bus were eagerly discussing the Windsor family's wedding.
Elizabeth thought, 'The Windsor family?'
'Someone related to Alexander?' she wondered.
After last night, Elizabeth's view of Alexander had changed somewhat. She felt he wasn't as cold and heartless as she had thought.
The bus arrived, and Elizabeth took it to the Guise Mansion.
Seeing Elizabeth actually place fifty thousand dollars on the coffee table within a day, Lila was furious. "Did you rob a bank?" she said sarcastically.
"This has nothing to do with you. Please write me a receipt, and we'll be even," Elizabeth said, handing her a pen and paper.
Lila knocked them away and demanded more, "Since you got the money so easily, you can't just repay us fifty thousand dollars! Eight years, five hundred thousand dollars isn't too much, right?"
Elizabeth fell silent.
"Lila, Clara!" At that moment, Oliver burst in excitedly, saying, "Great news! The day after tomorrow, Alexander is having an engagement party with Clara!"
