Chapter 24 Promise Not to Pester Him Relentlessly
Alexander did not avert his gaze due to Elizabeth's scream. His serious eyes scanned Elizabeth up and down. Elizabeth pushed Alexander hard, picked up the bath towel, wrapped herself quickly, and rushed into the guest bedroom.
As she closed the door, tears streamed down her face.
The sense of shame was something only she knew how suffocating it was.
Wiping away the tears with her wrist, Elizabeth was about to get her clothes when the door behind her suddenly opened. She shuddered in fright and saw Alexander holding a medical kit.
Elizabeth covered her front with the bath towel. "What are you doing?" she asked anxiously.
Alexander said nothing, just raised his hand to control her arm, then flipped her over onto the bed. Before she could react, cool medicine was applied onto her back.
Elizabeth had several marks on her back that she couldn't see herself. She only knew that she felt a stinging sensation on her back while she was showering earlier. Now, with Alexander applying the ointment, the burning sensation was instantly relieved.
Next to be treated were her thighs and calves, all covered with marks. Elizabeth lay on the bed, too ashamed to say a word, her cheeks burning red. She didn't even know how he managed to apply the ointment on her entire back.
Before she could react, he flipped her over again.
At this point, Elizabeth was so ashamed that she wanted to die.
She closed her eyes tightly, clenched her fists, and bit her lip.
She didn't know what would happen next.
Elizabeth didn't have the courage to resist him if he tried to do anything to her. She had seen with her own eyes how ruthlessly he punished those thugs. She had made up her mind that if he sexually assaulted her, she would rush into his room, mess with his mechanisms, and trigger them to kill herself!
She would die right in front of him.
However, as time passed, after all the marks on her body were evenly covered with ointment, Alexander made no further moves.
Elizabeth slowly opened her eyes.
What she saw was Alexander's dark, cold face.
She had never seen Alexander with such an expression before. It was a look of disgust that made her feel like he wanted to kill her.
Elizabeth suddenly remembered that Alexander had always been disgusted with her.
If it weren't for her providing comfort and companionship to Esme, Alexander might have turned her into a corpse long ago.
How could he possibly sexually assault her?
Elizabeth wrapped herself in the bath towel and looked at Alexander with a pale, indifferent expression. She remarked, "I know everything you do to me is because of your mother, so don't worry. I will never cling to you or become obsessed with you just because you touched me. If I go back on my word, I'll get hit by a car when I step out!"
After saying that, she didn't look at him again.
Alexander closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then spoke in an extremely cold tone, "Good to know!"
With that, he picked up the medical kit and turned to leave.
The door closed heavily.
After leaving Elizabeth's bedroom, Alexander went into the bathroom and took a cold shower for over an hour to extinguish the flaming desire within him.
The next day, Alexander rose early, needing to catch an early flight to a neighboring country. He prepared himself some hot milk and a sandwich for breakfast. Elizabeth also got up early, and upon seeing Alexander eating breakfast at the dining table, pretended not to notice him.
"Come here!" Alexander called out in a deep voice.
Elizabeth bit her lip nervously, then asked, "What's wrong?"
Alexander urged, "Eat breakfast before you go out."
"I'm not used to eating breakfast," Elizabeth said flatly, then walked to the entrance to open the door.
She left Alexander alone.
Elizabeth really didn't have the habit of eating breakfast. It wasn't that she didn't want to; during the eight years she stayed at The Guise Mansion, she was ostracized by the Guise family, and they tormented her at every meal she had at The Guise Mansion.
So, every morning, she would leave for school early and often skipped breakfast. If she didn't have money to buy breakfast on the way, she would endure the hunger until it was lunchtime.
Elizabeth left the house and took a bus to Esme's hospital room just as Esme was waking up.
"Mom," Elizabeth said with a warm smile, "I brought you your favorite oatmeal cookies. I'll watch you eat breakfast before I go to work."
Esme, however, put the breakfast aside, grabbed her hand, and asked seriously, "Elizabeth, tell me. What happened these past few days when you didn't come to see me?"
"Mom, what are you thinking? I was on a business trip," Elizabeth said.
Esme shook her head refusing to believe her excuse. She scolded, "Silly child, don't forget, I was in prison for many years. You don't know why I was in prison, but I've seen more evil in people than you have. You can't fool me. Yesterday, when I woke up, I saw your face was swollen, and there were finger marks on it."
Elizabeth remained silent.
With her life experience, it was indeed hard to deceive Esme.
"Was it that Guise family you used to stay with? They saw you not only got out of prison but also married such a good husband, and they were jealous of you? Is that it?" Esme asked.
Elizabeth didn't know how to answer.
Her face was indeed slapped by Clara, and she almost lost her life at Clara's hands.
But Clara was the one Alexander truly liked.
"Mom, it's really not the case. The Guise family wouldn't dare offend me now. You were seeing things incorrectly yesterday. My face was a bit swollen because I stayed up late on the business trip. It's really nothing. Mom, hurry up and have your breakfast. I have to go to work soon and I'll leave after you finish eating." Elizabeth made some excuses to brush off Esme.
Esme didn't ask further and smiled. She said helplessly, "Alright, I'll listen to you."
After watching Esme finish her meal, Elizabeth left the hospital and hurried to the company.
Originally, Elizabeth was supposed to go directly to the construction site to work on odd jobs, but she had been absent for several days. She wasn't sure if the design department would still want her as an employee.
Entering the company and arriving at the design department, Elizabeth nervously approached the design director. She apologized, "I'm sorry, Director. I had some family issues and couldn't request leave in time."
The director sneered, "You think working as a laborer at the construction site is beneath you, so you didn't want this job and took several days off without giving any notice in advance, I bet you were actually looking for another job. When you couldn't find one, you shamelessly came back, isn't that right?"
Elizabeth bit her lip in embarrassment. She replied, "That's not it, Director."
"Get out!" The director angrily drove Elizabeth away, saying, "Someone like you, without even a diploma, can only draw a few sketches. I wouldn't even want you as an assistant! Get out!"
Elizabeth remained silent.
This was a job she had worked hard to get. She never thought she could sit in an office and easily draw sketches.
She was fine with carrying bricks at the construction site; she didn't mind it at all.
"Get out!" the director yelled, picked up a stack of documents and threw them at Elizabeth. Elizabeth turned to dodge and bumped into someone's arms.
"What a coincidence, running into you here," Owen said with a cheeky grin.
