Chapter 304 The Events of That Year
Elizabeth's face turned slightly red, and she said nothing more.
Such a meeting was surely arranged by the powerful; she just needed to attend. She was a very perceptive and sensible person. At the meeting, she wouldn't say anything out of line; she could make herself mute on the spot.
Putting down her utensils, Elizabeth said, "If there's nothing else, you should entertain Alice. She hasn't played with you for several days. She's so spoiled by you that she doesn't want to play those games with me anymore. She wants to play intellectual games with you. You play with Alice, and I'll go work for a while. I have several drawings to finish."
Alexander also put down his utensils and asked her, "Do you like your job?"
Elizabeth pressed her lips together, answering, "Of course!"
"How much do you like it?"
"Do you want me to answer honestly?"
"Of course!"
Elizabeth took a deep breath, saying, "Ever since I was a child, I've always wanted to finish college quickly, to learn as much as I could, and then start working as soon as possible. As long as I had a job, I could leave the Guise Family. I wouldn't have to live in others' house anymore. I could earn my own money to support myself and my mom."
"I've always told myself that as long as I had a job opportunity, I would work several times harder than others. I've always loved working and wanted to be self-reliant, to save up some money. Then, I could go back home and pay my respects to my mom's spirit, telling her that I have a job now. I think work can make a person feel fulfilled and provide the greatest sense of security."
Elizabeth had always lacked a sense of security.
She was fostered in the Guise Family, and everyone there despised her. Shortly after starting college, Elizabeth was imprisoned, and not long after being released, she was hunted down.
Her life had always been turbulent.
So she longed for stability, the kind of stability earned through her own hard work, which gave her the most sense of security.
Thinking about going home to visit her mother, Elizabeth looked up at Alexander, asking, "A week ago, you gave me that five million dollars, saying it was compensation. At the time, I thought you were compensating me because Molly would insult and reprimand me. What was that money really for?"
Elizabeth hadn't touched a single cent of that five million dollars.
"It was for you, pocket money," Alexander said in a different way.
Five million dollars as pocket money?
She really was a rich woman now.
"You're not going to take it back?" she asked incredulously.
"No!" Alexander said.
She treated the money like a hot potato, afraid to take or use it. In the entire Sunwillow City, any woman who could receive five million dollars from Alexander would be overjoyed.
No wonder Owen used to say she was a country girl.
She had never seen so much money, so when she suddenly had it, she didn't even dare to spend it.
She couldn't believe the money was hers.
"Can I take out a bit and go back to my hometown?" Elizabeth finally asked.
Elizabeth had always wished to go back home to visit her mother's grave and move her parents' ashes to Sunwillow City., but for six years, she hadn't been able to fulfill it.
She looked up, hopefully, at Alexander.
She didn't know if Alexander would agree, probably an eighty percent chance he wouldn't.
However, to Elizabeth's surprise, Alexander calmly said, "Of course you can go back to your hometown, but you'll have to wait until I'm done with my current tasks."
Elizabeth was silent.
Did he want to go with her? To her poor, remote hometown?
"Aren't you going to draw your designs?" Alexander asked.
Elizabeth turned and went into her bedroom.
That night, she worked on her drawings until late. She didn't even know when she fell asleep. When she woke up again, she found herself in Alexander's arms.
Elizabeth struggled to get up, but Alexander said in a cold tone, "If you don't want to be tired at night, and if you want to rest well, don't move. If you move again, I can't guarantee I won't punish you like I did yesterday."
Elizabeth was silent.
She didn't dare move again.
That night, she lay in his arms until she woke up the next morning.
When she woke up, Alexander was no longer in bed.
Elizabeth picked up his watch from the table and saw that it was only six in the morning.
Why did he get up so early? Where did he go?
At that moment, Alexander was sitting on the top floor in a robe, taking a call.
At 5:50 AM, his phone had suddenly rang. To avoid disturbing her sleep, he chose to go to the top floor to take the call.
The call was from Gavin.
"Mr. Windsor, Declan arrived in Sunwillow City at nine o'clock last night. As soon as he got off the plane, he called the old house. According to the driver at the old house, Declan seemed quite angry," Gavin said.
"Got it," Alexander responded briefly.
Gavin worriedly asked, "Mr. Windsor, aren't you afraid that Declan and your grandfather might team up and cause more trouble?"
Alexander said calmly, "I've been waiting for an opportunity."
Gavin was silent.
Declan had done favors for the Windsor Family and for Alexander. Moreover, his influence in Pariz was deeply rooted, and Alexander couldn't easily move against him.
Alexander's strategy for dealing with Declan was to wait quietly.
Alexander was setting a trap for Declan, waiting for him to make a mistake.
That was Alexander. He was not only ruthless but also very strategic.
"Alright, Mr. Windsor, there's nothing else. I just wanted to inform you that Declan and Clara have returned to Sunwillow City," Gavin said, preparing to hang up.
"One more thing," Alexander said on the other end of the line.
"Yes, Mr. Windsor?"
"Six years ago, I asked you to investigate the relationship between Elizabeth and the Guise Family. At the time, we stopped the investigation because of Clara's pregnancy. Now, I want you to look into it again. What exactly is the relationship between Elizabeth and the Guise family? What did the Guise family do to Elizabeth?"
Gavin immediately said, "Mr. Windsor, I've already looked into it."
Alexander asked, "What?"
"I thought you might ask me sooner or later, so I checked it out whenever I had the chance."
"Cut the crap! Get to the point!" Alexander immediately said.
"Mrs. Windsor went to prison back then to take the fall for Clara. Her mother's death also seems to be related to Oliver. It appears that her mother had some kind of entangled relationship with Oliver, but I haven't been able to find out the details yet," Gavin explained.
Alexander was silent.
Elizabeth went to prison back then to take the fall for Clara!
