Chapter 56 The First Time Calling His Name So Sweetly
"Got it," Alexander said curtly before hanging up. His deep eyes softened a bit when he looked at Clara, and his tone became much gentler. "You're already carrying my child. How can I let you go back to live there?"
"No!" Clara refused firmly, "Mr. Windsor. We haven't officially married yet. I'm not your wife. Now that I know I'm going to be a mother, I need to set an example for my child. I can't cling to you. I need to learn to be strong and principled. So, until we are married, I won't live with you. But rest assured, I will take good care of our baby. I promise."
Her words were so resolute that for a moment, Alexander felt Clara had changed, becoming more dignified.
Alexander paused for a few seconds, then said in a low voice, "Okay."
Then he looked at Oliver and Lila, and requested, "Please take good care of Clara. In a month, I will marry her. She will be the only mistress of the Windsor Group, and the child in her womb will be the next heir of the Windsor Group."
Oliver, both excited and nervous, said, "Mr. Windsor. As long as you don't mind Clara, Lila and I will definitely take good care of her. The child in Clara's womb is also our grandchild. I never wanted to abort the child. We were just afraid her circumstance would affect you."
Lila interrupted Oliver, "Stop talking!"
Oliver immediately nodded. He urged, "Mr. Windsor, you go ahead. We'll take Clara back first?"
"I'll come to see her as soon as I finish my business," after saying this, Alexander turned and left without saying more.
Gavin, who had been following them, didn't spare a glance at the Guise family and followed Alexander into the car. As the car drove away, Alexander remained silent, and Gavin didn't dare to make a sound.
Gavin's intuition told him that Alexander didn't like Clara at all.
But now she happened to be pregnant with his child.
Alexander's own background was tragic enough. Esme was never accepted by the Windsor family. Although Alexander bore the Windsor name, he was initially not accepted by the family either. They only saw him as an illegitimate child, even less than other illegitimate children, merely providing him with food to survive.
As he grew up, Alexander didn't even have shares in the Windsor Group, let alone the same inheritance rights as his brothers.
This was why Alexander's methods were so ruthless and merciless today. If he weren't like this, he might not have survived by now.
The world had been cruel to Alexander.
So he survived by being even more ruthless than the world.
Alexander knew firsthand the struggle of clawing his way up. Even though he now firmly held the position of head of the Windsor family and no longer needed to cater to others, Esme never had the chance to live as a member of the Windsor family.
Esme's illness was caused by years of worry and hardship.
Therefore, Alexander would not let his child suffer the same fate. Even if the entire Windsor family opposed him, even if the highest elder, Marcus, objected, Alexander would still marry Clara.
Clara's child would be the next heir of the Windsor Group.
Gavin drove Alexander to the Windsor Manor. As expected, Marcus had summoned Alexander to choose a fiancée.
"It's been a while since the last family gathering. You should have made a choice by now, right? Which family's girl do you fancy?" Marcus asked Alexander with a stern face.
Alexander was thirty-two years old. If he had married early and had an ordinary family, his child would be in elementary school by now!
Seeing Alexander remain calm and silent, Marcus felt a surge of anger but tried to restrain himself from any outbursts because he was also afraid of Alexander.
Marcus didn't dare to get angry and could only try to persuade him, "There aren't many families that match ours. The Bell family's daughter, the one who often plays with Owen, Samuel's sister, is twenty-two. There's also the Campbell family's daughter, but I favor the Jones family's daughter the most."
Despite Marcus saying so much, Alexander didn't even lift an eyelid.
Seeing that Alexander neither spoke nor objected, Marcus continued, "The Jones family's eldest son, Preston Jones, has a niece named Elodie. The Williams family in Sunwillow City may not be prominent anymore, but Elodie grew up in the Jones household, raised by Declan. Although she carries the Jones name, she is considered Declan's granddaughter. The Jones family has many male descendants but only one girl. and Elodie is Declan's most cherished descendant."
Marcus added, "If you marry Elodie, with Declan's influence in Sunwillow City and Pariz, the Windsor Group..."
"I won't marry any of the people you mentioned," Alexander suddenly interrupted Marcus.
Marcus was dumbfounded.
All his words were in vain.
"You!" Marcus slammed the table in anger and tapped the floor with his cane, then ranted, "You've grown bold! Now that you control the group, you think I won't dare to hit you! I'm choosing Elodie from the Jones family for your sake! The Jones family may not be as prominent as the Windsor family, but they are the oldest aristocrats in Sunwillow City."
Alexander interrupted Marcus again, "My business doesn't need any external support! So, I won't marry any woman for the sake of an alliance!"
"Then who do you want to marry? You're already over thirty. Who do you want to marry? Tell me!" Marcus was fuming as he demanded for an answer.
Alexander looked at Marcus with cold, hard eyes. "Of course, I'll marry the mother of my child!"
His words had a double meaning.
He not only pointed out the Windsor family's injustice towards his mother but also made it clear to Marcus that from Alexander onward, there would be no distinction in the status of descendants in the Windsor family.
Marcus said guiltily, "Alexander, about your mother..."
"If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving!" Alexander stood up and left. He acknowledged Marcus as his grandfather and never cut off ties with him, but that didn't mean the Windsor family could interfere in Esme's matters.
Leaving the Windsor Manor, Alexander returned to the company. The meeting that was interrupted in the morning continued in the afternoon. The work that had stalled due to Oliver and Clara's pregnancy resumed, and Alexander didn't go out of his way to find Oliver again.
After the afternoon meeting, Alexander went to the hospital to visit Esme.
In the hospital room, he saw Elizabeth already there taking care of Esme. Seeing Alexander arrive, Elizabeth smiled sweetly. "Alexander, you're here."
Alexander remained silent. He was mesmerized by the way she called out to him.
It was the first time she had called his name so sweetly.
