Chapter 246 A Very Important Call
Elizabeth's heart sank a little, but her expression remained calm.
She no longer looked at Alexander; instead, her gaze drifted out the car window. When she was still, her expression was both immersed and closed off, as if she lived in her own world, neither fighting nor competing, neither happy nor sad.
Even if someone were to put a knife to her neck right now, she might not even glance at them, let alone show any sign of fear.
Alexander liked her just like that.
Seeing her sitting posture, with her back very straight, Alexander casually draped his arm around her, holding her. She did not resist but leaned into his arm like a docile kitten.
He only said one sentence, "Don't get involved in Molly's affairs."
But she already understood.
The Lavien family were his close friends, so close that a woman like her, who had been taken by him, had no right to interfere. There was even a possibility that because Molly wanted to teach her a lesson, he chose to hide out at The Lavien Mansion in Pariz for a few days.
She thought it was pathetic.
All the way, Elizabeth didn't speak again. Whatever Alice said to her, she couldn't quite remember. Alice, seeing that Elizabeth was always absent-minded, thought Elizabeth was tired. So, she used both hands to massage Elizabeth's legs while saying to Alexander, "Daddy, when I grow up, let's take care of Mommy together. Look how hard she works."
Alexander was silent.
Wasn't it supposed to be that when Alice grew up, she would take care of him and Elizabeth?
Seeing Alexander not speaking, Alice asked again, "What, Daddy, do you have a problem with that? If you don't want to take care of Mommy, I'll find her a boyfriend who's even more handsome than you. There are plenty of handsome men chasing after her."
Gavin, who was driving, laughed.
He had figured out that Alice always stood on her mother's side, even though Elizabeth had ignored her for Alexander a few days ago, almost forgetting her outside. Yet, Alice still sided with Elizabeth.
Gavin sighed again, raising a daughter is really great.
No wonder Alexander went to great lengths to find his daughter.
This time, Alexander's face didn't look so bad.
Gavin drove a bit faster, having been in a good mood lately. Ever since Alexander found Elizabeth and Alice, Gavin felt his work environment had changed dramatically. In the past, driving Alexander every day, the most he heard was Alexander saying, "If it doesn't work out, just handle it! Make sure it's done properly!"
Or Alexander would say, "I'll give you five percent profit. If you agree, sign the contract. If not? Then four percent! Still not agreeing? Two percent!"
Every day, picking up and dropping off Alexander, Gavin had never seen him smile. His face was always cold, and Gavin sometimes worried that he might get facial paralysis.
But now, Alexander was really different.
Although he still didn't smile much, his expressions were much richer. He first had a cold face, then a helpless one, and then, there was even a faint trace of pride.
At this moment, Alexander was indeed hiding his pride, deliberately keeping a neutral expression as he said to Alice, "You can find someone for your mom, but let's see if those men dare to date her!"
His tone seemed casual, but it was extremely domineering.
However, in Elizabeth's ears, it was a reminder of the disparity in status between him and her.
She couldn't escape his control.
He could pamper her, teaching her to drive, marrying her, and even taking her to The Windsor Manor to declare his sovereignty. However, in front of his life-and-death friend Gideon, she was nothing.
Back home, Elizabeth still didn't speak. After dinner, she didn't check on Alice, knowing that every evening after dinner was Alexander and Alice's interaction time. She just took her phone into her bedroom and started scrolling through the parents' group chat messages.
She hadn't checked it for a few days, not knowing that as soon as she joined the group, someone had questioned her. When she didn't respond promptly, a few active women in the group would gossip about her.
They said things like, Elizabeth always went silent when it was time to pay for something.
Some more blunt parents would directly say, "Ms. Spencer, if you have difficulties, please don't join this group and take up a spot, okay?"
The reason for such blunt remarks was a recent event that Mira had mentioned to her a few days ago. The parents were discussing whether to expel a family that pretended to be wealthy from the kindergarten, to keep the kindergarten's environment pure. To make the discussion seem formal, they decided to host a party that was to be held at a very high-end hotel.
Elizabeth had never been to this hotel, but from the way a few wealthy women bragged about it, she knew that a bottle of wine there cost over a hundred thousand dollars, the cutlery was pure gold, and a cake tower cost tens of thousands of dollars. The environment was said to be very beautiful.
These were the hot topics in the group chat a few days ago, but Elizabeth had never participated in the discussions.
In the end, they proposed that each person contribute fifty thousand dollars, twelve people in total, making six hundred thousand dollars for the party.
All the other parents had their money ready, except for Elizabeth, who had not responded.
This was why Angela's mom had blocked Elizabeth at the kindergarten gate and looked down on her when picking up Alice today.
Thinking about it now, Elizabeth realized that Angela's mom had a reason to look down on her.
Since she had agreed to participate in the gathering, why hadn't she paid yet? Even though she knew that the gathering of twelve people was essentially a way for a few wealthy women to show off their wealth, she still had to go.
Adults might have ulterior motives, but the children played together purely and happily. Alice needed friends and a good environment.
Elizabeth had to make sure Alice was stable.
Thinking of fifty thousand dollars, Elizabeth remembered that six years ago, she had also borrowed fifty thousand dollars from Alexander to repay the Guise family when she barely knew him. Now, it was another fifty thousand dollars.
It wasn't much, but for Elizabeth, her entire assets amounted to only a few hundred dollars in her pocket.
To attend Alice's parents' group gathering, Elizabeth had to ask Alexander for money. Thinking of this, Elizabeth opened the bedroom door to find Alexander, only to find Alice alone in the playroom.
"Alice, where's your dad?" Elizabeth asked Alice.
Alice's sweet voice replied, "He said he had to make a very important phone call."
Elizabeth was silent.
