Chapter 290 Having Sex Once and a Hundred Times
Gerald washed up, changed his clothes, and headed upstairs to knock on Nicole's door.
"Come in," came Nicole's weak voice.
Gerald opened the door and saw Nicole sitting in a wicker chair by the window, staring outside. She was holding a photo frame with a family picture from when his missing younger sister was just a hundred days old.
Gerald grabbed a thin blanket, walked over, and draped it over her legs. "Mom, what are you thinking about again?"
Nicole gave a faint smile. "Nothing much. Why are you home so early today?"
Gerald was usually buried in a mountain of government work. Today was definitely out of the ordinary.
"I wanted to come back and spend some time with you," he admitted.
He squatted down next to Nicole, looking up at her.
Nicole patted his shoulder. "You're all grown up, still acting like a kid."
"No matter how old I get, I'm still your son," he said sincerely.
Nicole touched his hair. "You've really grown up, Gerald. You even have some gray hair."
Gerald chuckled. "Yeah. If we walked out together, people who didn't know us might think we're siblings. They wouldn't guess you're my mom."
Nicole laughed and gave him a playful pat. "You're talking nonsense again."
Making her laugh, Gerald then said, "I'm serious. The Starlight Festival is coming up. How about I take you out for a walk? Maybe buy something?"
Nicole shook her head. "No, there's nothing worth buying."
After chatting for a bit, Nicole finally asked, "You have something to tell me, don't you?"
Gerald said, "Nothing escapes your eyes."
"What is it?"
"It's about the Campbell family."
"The Campbell family?" Nicole asked. "What's going on with them? When I saw them a few days ago, they seemed fine."
"They ran into some trouble," Gerald said. "But it's a minor issue. I can't get involved, so I came to let you know. If Mrs. Campbell comes to you, don't be soft-hearted."
Nicole said, "If it's something you can't get involved in, I understand. Don't worry, I know what to do."
"I'm just afraid you'll be soft-hearted towards Shirley," Gerald said, concern evident in his voice.
"I won't." Nicole's expression turned cold. "That Shirley, if she were my Lily, she wouldn't have turned out like that."
The youngest daughter of the Clarence family, nicknamed Lily, had gone missing.
Gerald was afraid Nicole would think about the past again, so he quickly said, "Mom, let's not think about that. I rarely have free time. Will you come with me to buy some clothes?"
Nicole then looked at him. "Alright."
Gerald helped her up, and as they walked out of the room, there was an old photo on the cabinet by the door. In the photo, Nicole was still young, and Gerald's grandmother was still alive.
During the Campbell family's last visit, Alfonso accidentally spotted a photo in the room and noticed that Josephine bore a striking resemblance to Gerald's grandmother in the picture, which excited him greatly.
Of course, it was quite common for people to look similar in this world. However, when he pondered the situation of the missing daughter from the Clarence family and observed the Todd couple's treatment of Josephine, it was clear she was far from being their biological child.
Thus, convinced of Josephine's potential connection to the Clarence family, Alfonso believed that marrying her and introducing her to Nicole would ensure her well-being due to her and Gerald's grandmother resemblance. That was enough.
But who knew, Josephine completely ignored his advances. Alfonso's initial plan was indeed good.
He knew Stuart was chasing after Josephine again, but she had no plans to forgive him.
Even though they hadn't interacted much, he had a pretty good read on Josephine's character.
If Stuart pulled any stunts now, Josephine would definitely shut him out for good.
Alfonso was ready to swoop in once Josephine and Stuart had a falling out.
As for what would happen if Josephine and Stuart ended up in bed after drinking the aphrodisiac, he didn't care.
Josephine wasn't a virgin, and she had been Stuart's wife. Whether they slept together once or a hundred times, what difference did it make?
He just didn't expect Stuart to catch on to his plan.
Even though he had kept his distance.
The aphrodisiac and the person who administered it had nothing to do with him.
Of course, he didn't realize that Stuart had the highest status in Hustalia. If he wanted to dig up something, how could he not find out?
Not to mention Stuart, even Rex had his own influence in Hustalia.
The person Alfonso hired had already ratted him out completely.
And Rex had also approached Steven, fuming, "Are we still brothers or what?"
He had been busy with Jessica's stuff these past few days and hadn't been around. He didn't expect Alfonso to pull such a dirty trick.
Steven was confused by his outburst. "What are you talking about?"
"Don't act like you don't know about Alfonso's little schemes," Rex said. "He drugged Josephine with an aphrodisiac; why didn't you tell me?"
Steven sighed. "I wanted to help you, but look at me, do I have the power?"
Rex thought for a moment and realized it wasn't Steven's fault.
Because Steven had Laura by his side.
"Are you that scared of her? She's always been like this. Do you really plan to spend the rest of your life with her?" Rex said.
Rex knew all about Steven and Laura.
Although Steven had wronged Laura years ago.
But in Rex's view, Steven had been so humble all these years, he had already made up for it.
Laura was still so bossy and willful, wasn't it just because Steven spoiled her?
Rex thought Steven was quite good at business, but when it came to Laura, he was completely clueless.
Steven remarked, "You're saying that because you haven't really been in love."
Rex replied, "If being in love means suffering like this, I'd rather not love at all."
"Exactly," Steven said. "Then you should back off. Josephine isn't right for you."
"I see you really don't want to be brothers with me anymore." Rex glared at him. "When two people are together, love isn't everything. We're not kids anymore; compatibility is what matters."
Steven smiled. "Even if you don't back off, you won't win. Why bother getting involved?"
Rex retorted, "I'm only a few years older than Stuart. In other aspects, what do I lack compared to him?"
Steven said, "You're not lacking compared to Stuart, but you're not suited for love. If you want to find someone compatible, there are plenty of options. Why insist on Josephine?"
"I just feel comfortable with Josephine," Rex explained. "It's hard to put into words. I just find her amazing."
Josephine had no idea so many people were thinking about her.
When she came out of the hospital, she saw Stuart.
At this moment, Josephine didn't want to see anyone.
She had taken leave and went for a check-up, wishing only to return home and have a good sleep.
But this matter wasn't over yet.
She couldn't just be harmed like this without doing anything.
Stuart saw her and spoke up, "Josephine, we need to talk."
