Chapter 542 I Have No Temper?
The two had coffee, wandered around aimlessly, and then actually went for a barbecue.
Fortunately, it wasn't a street stall, but the simple plastic tables and chairs still clashed with Gerald's demeanor.
Kathy tasted the food herself and then looked at him expectantly, "Is it good?"
Gerald nodded, "It's pretty good."
Most of the people eating here were young, in their teens or twenties.
Someone like Gerald, in his forties and considered middle-aged, was almost nowhere to be seen.
But he was handsome and had a good demeanor, attracting a lot of attention.
Kathy originally thought having a meal was no big deal, but noticing the looks people were giving Gerald, she started to feel uncomfortable.
Not all of those looks were kind.
Kathy didn't finish her meal and looked at Gerald, who was sitting and eating elegantly, as if he were dining in a high-end restaurant rather than eating barbecue.
Seeing her put down her fork, Gerald asked, "Are you full? You ate so little."
Kathy took his hand and pulled him up, "Let's go."
Gerald was puzzled, "Not eating anymore? We haven't finished..."
Before he could finish, Kathy pulled him out.
Gerald didn't know what was wrong with her.
To be honest, the women he usually interacted with were mostly colleagues and subordinates.
He really wasn't good at figuring out a girl's thoughts.
But seeing Kathy like this, he could guess she was unhappy.
But she was quite happy when they were shopping just now.
Why did she become unhappy halfway through the barbecue?
Kathy pulled him towards the parking lot.
The car was Kathy's. Once they got in, she didn't say anything and just started the car and drove off.
Gerald sat in the passenger seat, watching her drive.
Kathy's face was tense, looking very serious, her lips pressed together, with a determined look.
Gerald asked, "Where are we going? This isn't the way home."
Kathy didn't respond.
At a red light, Gerald took her hand. "What's wrong? Are you eloping with me?"
Kathy didn't look at him, just said, "Yes, I'm taking you away to the ends of the earth, to live in our own world."
Gerald smiled, "Alright, then take me away."
Kathy looked at him, "Really?"
"Really," Gerald said, "Sometimes I also want to be impulsive, not care about anything, not think about anything, find a beautiful place, and live a few quiet days."
Kathy heard clearly that he said it would only be a few days, not a lifetime.
This meant that even if he went to seclude himself, he would only temporarily leave this place.
Eventually, he would come back.
She suddenly lost the courage to continue.
"The light is green," Gerald reminded her, "Go."
Kathy stepped on the gas, and at the next intersection, where she should have gone straight, she chose to turn right.
Gerald didn't ask where she was going, just occasionally glanced at her profile.
Having taken the wrong road, Kathy no longer had a destination, driving aimlessly, not knowing where to go.
She didn't know how long it had been when the car's system reminded her to refuel.
Kathy came back to her senses.
Gerald spoke, "I thought you were going to get on the highway."
Kathy looked ahead, and there was indeed a highway exit.
The two went to a gas station, and Gerald got out of the car, walked a bit away, and took a phone call.
Kathy opened the glove compartment and took out her driver's license.
She always carried her license with her.
She also knew that Gerald's documents were in his briefcase.
Just now, she had wanted to drive straight to City Hall.
But in the end, she hesitated.
After refueling, Gerald's call still wasn't over.
Kathy looked at him through the car window.
Gerald, tall and strong, holding his phone, frowning, not knowing what he was saying to the other person.
After about three minutes, Gerald walked towards her.
Kathy had a premonition that Gerald was likely going back to work.
Gerald got in the car and asked her, "Shall we continue?"
Kathy asked him, "Can you? Is there something at work? Don't you need to handle it?"
Gerald said, "I promised to spend today with you. By the way, your shoulder can't handle long drives, get out, I'll drive."
Kathy shook her head.
Gerald looked at her, "What's wrong? Why are you unhappy? If something's wrong, can you tell me?"
Kathy asked him, "Are you really not going back? Is work okay?"
"It's fine, they'll handle it. They can't wait for me to make every decision," Gerald said, "Before, when I was alone, I could be as busy as I wanted. Now that I have you, I need to make time to be with you. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to you."
"You don't have to do that," Kathy said, "If I cause you to delay your work, I would feel uneasy too."
"Don't think that way," Gerald said, "Since I'm with you, I naturally need to balance work and personal time. Don't overthink it, I know what to do."
"Gerald."
Gerald looked at her, "What's wrong?"
Kathy asked him, "If... I mean, if, that day when you were hospitalized with pneumonia, I didn't visit you, would we never have become a couple?"
"Why are you thinking about this?" Gerald touched her hair, "Let me think, you mean that time with pneumonia. Actually, even if you didn't come, as long as you contacted me later, we would have had a chance to meet."
"So, as long as we met, you would have made me your girlfriend? Why?"
Gerald said, "Why do you think? I wouldn't make someone my girlfriend for no reason."
"What if we didn't meet?"
"Then I would probably find a chance to meet you, either by looking for you myself or through Josephine."
"Why?"
"What do you mean?"
"Why would you look for me?"
"Kathy, do you really not understand, or are you deliberately trying to annoy me?" Gerald pulled her over and rubbed her cheek, "Naturally, because I like you and want to see you, that's why I would look for you."
"Like me?"
"Are you still doubting my feelings for you?"
"I want to ask you a question, can you answer me honestly?"
Gerald looked at her, "Sure. Just to clarify, I haven't lied to you before."
Kathy looked at him, "Are you with me really not because your family is pressuring you to get married, so you just found someone suitable?"
Gerald was silent for a few seconds.
He let go of Kathy's hand and leaned back a bit.
Kathy felt inexplicably nervous.
With a simple movement, Gerald's authority was evident.
He said, "Do you think I don't have a temper?"
