Chapter 486 You Promise Me Not to Get Angry

"Stop being so glib," Josephine said. "Anyway, now that you're pregnant, you need to be careful with your diet and everything else. Especially in the first three months. Don't think I'm just trying to scare you."

"I know," Laura said. "Since you won't help me come clean, I'll wait outside. When Steven arrives, we'll leave."

"You should talk here. At worst, we'll all go upstairs, and the first floor will be all yours," Josephine said. "It's late at night. Can he still drive after hearing this news?"

"Isn't that a bit exaggerated?" Laura asked.

Josephine looked at her without saying a word.

Laura felt guilty. "Alright, I get it."

The reason Steven called Stuart was that he couldn't reach Laura on her phone.

Knowing she was at Josephine's place, he felt relieved.

He had been very busy these past few days, but Laura seemed even busier.

They hadn't had a proper meal together at home for several days.

That evening, he finally got home a little after six, but Laura said she wasn't hungry.

Steven had someone prepare all her favorite dishes, but she said she had no appetite and only drank a little chicken soup.

Seeing that she really couldn't eat, Steven asked if she had snacked in the afternoon.

Laura wouldn't admit it.

Steven had a meeting at seven, and when he finished, he found Laura was gone.

That was when he came looking for her.

He knew he shouldn't doubt Laura's loyalty to their relationship, but he couldn't help it.

Sometimes he was too busy to spend much time with her.

But Laura was someone who couldn't sit still.

She loved excitement and fun.

When Steven didn't have time to accompany her, he always worried someone else might charm her away.

Moreover, these past few nights, Laura wouldn't let him into the bedroom.

Steven was genuinely a bit angry.

After so many years, he was used to sleeping with Laura.

Her breathing rhythm was his best sleep aid.

Now that they weren't sleeping together, he couldn't sleep at night.

In short, he decided to have a good talk with her today.

Whatever the issue, they couldn't sleep in separate beds.

When he arrived at the Haustia Mansion, the servant led him inside. Steven was stunned to see the entire first floor so quiet.

Only Laura was sitting on the sofa, smiling at him.

Steven walked over and asked, "Why did you suddenly come here? Are you hungry?"

"I've eaten," Laura said, waving him over. "Come, sit here."

Steven sat next to her and held her hand. "Where are Stuart and Josephine? Is Mr. Haustia asleep?"

"Probably asleep," Laura said. "They're upstairs. Do you need to see them?"

"Just let them know we're going home," Steven said. "I'm here to pick you up."

"Alright, but before we go, I need to tell you something."

Steven frowned. "Can't it wait until we get home? It's so late, and they need to rest. Let's not disturb them."

He was afraid Laura might suddenly decide to stay at Josephine's for a few days.

After all, she had stayed at Claudia's for several days before.

"Let's talk here," Laura said. "If we fight, someone can pull us apart."

"What fight?" Steven asked. "Why are you being so mysterious?"

"Well..." Laura began, looking at him. "I need to tell you something, but you have to promise you won't get mad."

"When have I ever gotten mad at you?"

"This time is different," Laura said. "Promise me first."

Steven said, "I can promise, but don't ask me to accept something I can't."

Laura knew what he meant.

He couldn't accept breaking up.

Steven had said before that they would be together for life, no matter what.

Even if they stopped loving each other, they would stay entangled until death.

Laura slapped his hand. "What are you talking about? Am I that unreasonable?"

Steven laughed. "Alright, you're not. So, what is it?"

"You promise you won't get mad?"

"I won't get mad."

Laura thought for a moment, finding it hard to say. "I'll show you something."

Steven had no idea what he was about to see.

Laura handed it to him, and he stared blankly. "Is this a pneumonia test? Do you have pneumonia?"

Laura rolled her eyes. "Can't you think of something good?"

Honestly, Steven had never seen a pregnancy test.

As a man, he had no use for it.

Laura was his first woman.

They had always used contraception because Laura didn't want kids.

So Steven always protected her in his own way.

He loved her too much to let her suffer the pain of an abortion.

Since she didn't want kids, he made sure she wouldn't get pregnant.

Because they always used contraception, Steven never thought about what that stick meant.

"What?" He asked. "Who's pregnant?"

If it wasn't a pneumonia test, it had to be a pregnancy test.

Those were the only two things he knew.

"Who do you think?" Laura crossed her arms and looked at him. "Who else could it be?"

Steven looked at her in disbelief. "It can't be... you?"

Laura had been worried he'd be angry.

Now, seeing his reaction, she got angry first. "Why can't it be me? I'm a woman too. I can get pregnant too!"

Steven stared at her in shock.

Seeing his reaction, Laura felt a bit better. "So, am I amazing or what?"

"No," Steven stammered. "We... we used contraception. How..."

"I tampered with it," Laura said proudly. "You didn't notice the condom was leaking!"

Steven swallowed hard. "So, you're pregnant?"

Laura nodded vigorously. "Yes! Aren't you happy? Steven, you're going to be a dad!"

Steven's eyes instantly reddened. He looked down at the two lines on the test.

A huge wave of joy surged in his heart.

He had no particular desire for children. He didn't even like kids.

But he wanted one, a child with Laura.

He always felt Laura was like a breeze, who might leave him at any moment.

But if they had a child, it could keep her tied to him forever.

But Laura had said no, and Steven didn't push her.

But now Laura was pregnant.

Was this real?

Steven could hardly believe his eyes.

"Hey!" Laura was unhappy. "Is that thing so interesting? I'm the one who's pregnant! I'm right here, and you're staring at a stupid stick?"

Steven carefully put the test back in her bag, then reached out and hugged her.

His movements were so gentle that Laura even felt he was trembling.
