Chapter 586 Am I Foolish
The last time Ulysses came home, he looked worried.
This time, he seemed to be in a great mood, full of energy.
Nicole smiled and asked him, "Why are you so happy today ?"
Ulysses said happily. "Izzy forgave me!"
"Who's Izzy?" Nicole asked curiously. "Why haven't you mentioned her before?"
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, Izzy is Isadora. She has a nickname that only her family can use."
"Oh, I see. So, you two made up?"
"Yes, we did." Ulysses sat down next to her. "Grandma, back in your day, were there more men who married into their wives' families?"
Nicole asked, puzzled. "Why are you asking this all of a sudden?"
"Because..." Ulysses scratched the back of his head, a bit embarrassed. "Because Izzy used to want someone to marry into her family."
"Marry into her family? You?" Nicole was furious. "What do you mean? Are you going to marry into her family?"
"No, don't worry," Ulysses quickly said. "Izzy initially had that idea because she thought I was poor. You know, I've always worked part-time jobs, so my classmates all thought I was poor. But after I confirmed my relationship with Izzy, you told me to explain everything to her, and then the incident with the purse happened."
"So she found out you had money? And that's why you two argued?"
"Yes, she thought that with my family's background, I would never marry into her family, so she wanted to break up with me."
"You didn't agree to marry into her family just to make up, did you?" Nicole was furious and slapped him. "What are you thinking?"
Ulysses felt wronged. "Grandma, why did you hit me? I haven't finished talking. I came back to discuss it with you."
"Discuss what? Marrying into her family? No way!"
"Grandma, times have changed. Who cares about that?" Ulysses said. "I specifically asked some married seniors, and they said that after getting married, they live their own lives. They can choose which family to spend the holidays with, and some even have children with their wives' surname. Does that count as marrying into the wife's family?"
Nicole said, "It's not like the old days when marrying into a family meant you belonged to them, even in death, and the children took their surname."
"Exactly, so what's the big deal?" Ulysses said. "Izzy just wants someone to help manage her family's business. Isn't that a small matter? I can ask Uncle Stuart to find someone for her..."
Nicole slapped him on the head. "You're already making arrangements? Do you know what it means to be disgraceful?"
Ulysses covered his head. "Grandma!"
"You said she misunderstood you as being poor, which is why she wanted you to marry into her family. Look at the kind of people who marry into families. Our family may not be extremely prestigious, but if you marry into her family, people will laugh at us!" Nicole was being modest.
If the Clarence Family wasn't prestigious, then what was?
If a heir of the Clarence Family married into another family, then no man in the world would be qualified to marry.
"I understand, Grandma," Ulysses said. "I just love her and want to spend my life with her. I don't care about anything else."
Nicole was so angry that she wanted to hit him again. "You don't care if your children belong to someone else?"
"That's strange. The children are mine. How could they only be hers? Just like Jeffery, he doesn't have the Haustia surname, but it doesn't matter. He's still Aunt Josephine and Uncle Stuart's child."
"Can you compare your situation to Josephine's?" Nicole was furious. "I'm not talking to you. I'll wait for your dad to come back and let him deal with you!"
Kathy knew that Gerald didn't usually interfere with Ulysses.
As long as Ulysses didn't make any major mistakes, he wouldn't get involved.
But she didn't expect that even something like marrying into another family wouldn't bother Gerald.
When they got home, Nicole brought it up. "Listen to this, your son wants to marry into another family. What do you think?"
Gerald looked surprised for a moment, then glanced at Ulysses.
Kathy was shocked. "What do you mean, marry into another family?"
Nicole briefly explained the situation.
Kathy was speechless.
She had heard of men marrying into their wives' families.
But she never thought it would happen to Ulysses.
The Clarence Family was prestigious. How could they let their child marry into another family?
Kathy instinctively looked at Gerald.
She thought Gerald might want to beat Ulysses.
But Gerald was very calm.
Kathy opened her mouth to say something, but didn't.
After all, she was a stepmother, and it wasn't her place to say anything.
Besides, such a big decision wasn't hers to make.
She thought that maybe all she could do was try to calm Gerald down if he got angry.
If Gerald wanted to hit Ulysses, she would help stop him.
But to her surprise, Gerald asked Ulysses, "Have you thought it through?"
Kathy couldn't tell, but Nicole knew very well.
Gerald was her son, and as soon as he said that, she knew what he meant.
She immediately spoke up, "What do you mean! He doesn't know any better, but you're going along with this nonsense?"
Gerald said, "Mom, he's nineteen, an adult. He should know what he can and can't do. Marrying into another family? Fine, but then everything in the Clarence Family will have nothing to do with him."
Ulysses was anxious. "Dad, how can you say that?"
"Do you know what it means to marry into another family?"
"I know, but things are different now," Ulysses said. "Nowadays, when daughters get married, it's not like before. When Kathy married you, did she stop caring about her family?"
Gerald said, "Maybe I'm just old-fashioned."
Nicole felt relieved when she heard that.
She had really thought Gerald was okay with Ulysses marrying into another family.
Ulysses stood up, a bit angry. "It's the modern age, Dad. Why are you so old-fashioned?"
Gerald asked him, "Did your girlfriend explicitly say she wants you to marry into her family?"
Ulysses shook his head. "No. Actually, when she found out our family was well-off, she wanted to break up because she knew I wouldn't marry into her family. But Dad, I really love her."
Gerald asked, "If I told you that you could marry into her family, but you would have no claim to our family's assets, could you accept that?"
Ulysses said directly, "Yes. But does that mean I can't keep the assets already in my name?"
Gerald said, "What if you can't?"
"Then I might feel a bit sad," Ulysses said. "But in the end, I would still choose to be with Isadora. You might think I'm foolish, but to me, she's more important than any assets. Dad, am I foolish?"
