Chapter 514 What the Hell Are You?

"So fast?" Gerald asked curiously, "Have you been up waiting for me?"

Kathy replied, "I don't have the habit of sleeping in. I usually get up around six in the morning."

"That's quite early," Gerald said. "When Josephine stays at home, she's usually still asleep when I leave for work."

"I developed this habit while studying abroad and have stuck to it ever since."

As they chatted and walked, Gerald took her to a small breakfast place he frequented. Though it was small, the food was authentic, and the place had been open for decades.

The shop owner recognized Gerald and asked, "Gerald? Oh, you're not alone today?"

Hearing someone called Gerald so affectionately, Kathy was surprised.

But they surely didn't know Gerald's identity.

If they knew Gerald was an official, they probably wouldn't chat so casually.

"Yes, I'm here with my girlfriend today," Gerald replied.

They had previously inquired about Gerald's family situation and knew his wife had passed away years ago, and he had been single since.

The shop owner's wife had even thought of introducing her divorced niece to Gerald.

Gerald had directly refused, saying he wasn't considering remarriage.

Unexpectedly, he suddenly brought a girlfriend today.

Kathy felt a bit uncomfortable when he directly told them she was his girlfriend. She blushed, greeted them, and quickly found a place to sit.

The shop owner's wife was even more enthusiastic and straightforward. She brought them hot milk and said, "Oh my, Gerald, you have a girlfriend now. That's wonderful! It puts my mind at ease!"

Gerald quickly said, "Thank you for your concern."

"Thank me for what? I didn't do anything," The shop owner's wife said. "But you, that time when some thugs came to cause trouble in the shop, if it weren't for you, we would have been in big trouble! The shop would have been wrecked by them."

The shop owner's wife chatted for a while longer before letting them eat and attending to other customers.

Kathy asked him, "Thugs? You fought with them?"

Gerald smiled, "Why, are you surprised?"

Kathy looked at him, "Not really, just thought someone like you wouldn't get into fights."

"Yesterday you doubted I could drive, and today you say I can't fight," Gerald said. "Seems like we need to spend more time together and get to know each other better."

"So you really fought them? You alone against a group of them?"

"It wasn't a group, just three or four," Gerald laughed. "They were all scrawny and weak."

In fact, those guys were no good. Seeing the shop owners were old and had no young people around, they planned to rob the place.

Because they were addicted to bad stuff and didn't have proper jobs, when their addiction kicked in, they thought of robbing for money.

Gerald happened to come by and sent them straight to the police station.

Now, when he talked about it with Kathy, he made it sound casual.

But Kathy was still worried, "There were several of them, and you were alone. What if they had weapons? It could have been very dangerous!"

"I didn't think much at the time," Gerald said. "I won't do it again."

Gerald could feel that Kathy was genuinely concerned.

After breakfast, Kathy dropped Gerald off at his workplace and then headed to her own job.

On the way, she received a call.

It was from an unknown number, but it was a regular phone number.

Although it shouldn't be a scam or a spam call, Kathy didn't answer.

The call seemed to end, but before Kathy could put down her phone, it rang again.

This time, Kathy answered.

"Are you Kathy?" The voice on the other end asked directly.

There was a familiar arrogance in the tone.

Kathy was taken aback and then asked, "Elara?"

She remembered the voice clearly from the woman she met last night.

"Well, you recognized me," Elara said. "Where are you? Let's meet."

Kathy said, "We barely know each other. There's no need to meet, right?"

"What, are you feeling guilty?" Elara said. "Afraid to come because you know I'm going to settle the score with you?"

Kathy almost laughed, "Why would I feel guilty? I don't even know you. What score do you want to settle with me?"

Elara said, "Let me tell you then! Gerald is the man I have my eyes on. Who do you think you are to be his girlfriend?"

Kathy was silent.

Elara thought she had intimidated her and continued, "If you know what's good for you, you'll leave him immediately! Look at your status. Do you think you deserve him? Your family used to have some money, but now you're down and out. How can you have the nerve to stay by his side?"

Kathy spoke up, "Ms. West, on what grounds are you saying these things to me? Are you Gerald's family? Friend? What is your relationship with him? Does Gerald's business have anything to do with you?"

Elara never expected a daughter from a fallen family to dare speak to her like this!

Her West family was a renowned family in Celestia Springs!

She could crush Kathy with just a finger!

Elara sneered, "What? Are you fighting for true love? Think you're so noble? You're nothing! I've seen plenty of women like you. To you, someone like Gerald is like a pie in the sky, and you dream of getting a bite. I understand, but Ms. Nelson, dreams end! Be realistic!"

Kathy said, "Fine, I'll wait for the day the dream ends. Thanks for the reminder!"

After that, she hung up.

Then, she leaned on the steering wheel, trembling all over.

Even though she knew Elara's words had nothing to do with Gerald.

But she had to admit, Elara's words hit her where it hurt.

Being with Gerald, she already felt inferior and lacked confidence.

Hearing Elara's words made it feel even more like a dream, which would soon end.

Her phone rang again, the same number.

Kathy directly hung up.

A few seconds later, a message notification sounded.

She picked it up and saw it was a message from that number.

Elara: [I advise you to leave Gerald immediately! Otherwise, you'll regret it!]

Kathy closed her eyes, took a deep breath, her eyes reddening, and her throat tightening.

At that moment, her phone rang again.

She didn't want to look, but she picked it up anyway.

This time, it was a message from Gerald.

Gerald: [Did you get to work?]

Kathy held her phone, her fingers trembling.

She struggled to type: [Yes, I'm here.]

Gerald replied: [That's good. I'm quite busy today. I'll contact you after work.]
