Chapter 308 Who Is Jeffery's Dad?
'Did Josephine take Jeffery to the hot springs again?' Stuart wondered. He tried calling her, but no answer.
After a moment, he decided to call Laura.
Laura picked up and asked, "Mr. Haustia, what's up?"
"Is Josephine with you? I went to her room, but she's not there," Stuart asked directly.
"No," Laura replied. "She should be resting in her room. Don't bother her."
Just as Laura finished speaking, her phone buzzed with a notification. She glanced at it and quickly stood up from the hot spring.
Steven, who was next to her, asked, "Laura, what's wrong?"
"Jeffery has a fever, and Josephine took him to the hospital!" Laura said anxiously.
"What?" Stuart was also worried. "How did she get there? Which hospital?"
Laura immediately got moving. "There's a private hospital nearby. Just use your GPS!" She hung up and rushed to change clothes. Steven quickly followed.
They changed and headed to the parking lot, only to see Stuart's car speeding away. They jumped into their car and followed.
When Stuart arrived, he saw Rex in the emergency room.
Stuart hurried over and asked, "Did you come with Josephine? Where are they?"
Rex had just finished a call. Seeing Stuart, he said, "You came too? Josephine and Jeffery are in the ward."
"I'll go check."
"Forget it. Jeffery just had his blood drawn and fell asleep after the exam."
Stuart felt a mix of emotions. Why was Josephine at the hospital with Rex? Did she just run into him, and he offered to help? Or did she ask him for help?
Thinking about it made Stuart jealous. Why Rex?
Seeing Stuart's expression, Rex didn't hold back. "I can handle things here. Mr. Haustia, if you have other matters, you should attend to them."
"You handle them?" Stuart said coldly. "In what capacity are you handling them?"
"I don't have any official capacity, but it seems neither do you, Mr. Haustia. Or should I say, ex?"
Stuart held back his anger. "Which ward are they in?"
"I already told you, they're resting. Mr. Haustia, don't disturb them."
Seeing Rex's authoritative demeanor, Stuart's irritation flared. "Whether Josephine wants me to see them or not is her call!"
Rex knew that Josephine definitely wouldn't let Stuart see Jeffery right now. Remaining composed and assured, he responded, "Then I'll call Josephine out and see if she needs your help." He walked to a separate ward door and knocked.
Josephine quickly opened the door. "Finished your call?" She then saw Stuart. "Why are you here?"
This starkly different attitude made Stuart nervous. How did it feel like Josephine's attitude towards Rex had changed in just a couple of hours?
Stuart suddenly felt an intense sense of crisis. "Josephine, how's Jeffery? Can I go in and see him?"
"He's fine, already asleep," Josephine said. "No need, you all can go back."
Josephine indeed refused him, but he was relieved that she was also sending Rex away. Both of them were being treated the same.
Rex said, "I'll stay. In case anything happens, I can help."
Stuart also said, "I'll stay. Mr. Armstrong, you have a kid at home; you should go back early."
Rex looked at him. "Mr. Haustia, you really never miss a chance to badmouth me."
Josephine said helplessly, "Stop arguing. It's not necessary. I've already told Laura, and she should be here soon."
Just as she finished speaking, Laura's voice came through, "Josephine!"
Josephine looked over and waved. "I'm here." She then told Rex and Stuart, "So you both can go back now. Thank you."
Laura hurried to check on Jeffery and said to Steven, "You should go back too. We don't need you here." With that, she followed Josephine into the ward and closed the door.
Three men stood outside the door. Before they could say anything, a familiar voice rang out, "How's Jeffery? How is he now?"
Turning around, they saw it was Liam.
"He just had some tests done; the results aren't out yet," Rex said. "Why are you here?"
"Josephine called me. I'm going in to check on him," Liam said, reaching for the door.
Stuart stopped him. "Josephine said we aren't needed and told us to leave."
He had already decided: if he couldn't stay, no one else would get to play the hero either. He planned to leave with them and then sneak back in later.
"Josephine asked me to come," Liam frowned. "We should at least know Jeffery's condition before leaving." He then knocked on the door.
Josephine quickly opened it and saw him. "You're here? Come in."
The three men watched as Liam went inside. Stuart gritted his teeth. "Why does he get to go in?"
Rex said, "Why don't you ask?"
Stuart wasn't stupid; asking would only embarrass himself. Stuart, aware of Liam and Josephine's closeness, felt a pang of jealousy despite knowing there was no romantic possibility between them.
Rex looked at Steven. "You can't even get the same treatment as Laura's partner. That's pretty sad."
Steven said, "Laura and Josephine are like sisters. Josephine is like family to me, so I naturally keep my distance."
Stuart didn't want to listen to their nonsense. Whoever wanted to leave could leave; he wasn't going anywhere.
Rex said, "Shall we go?"
Steven said, "Let's go. With Liam here, and both of them being doctors, everything should be fine."
The two were about to leave, but seeing Stuart not moving, Rex also stayed put. "Why aren't you leaving?"
Stuart glanced at him. "None of your business."
Rex said, "Every time we interact, your immaturity shines through. I seriously wonder how the Haustia Family business grew so large with you in charge."
Steven said, "It's simple. He compartmentalizes his mind for business and relationships. Otherwise, he wouldn't have caused Josephine so much pain in the past."
Stuart's face darkened. "Enough from both of you. If you're done, please leave. Keep it quiet in the hospital."
Rex asserted, "If we depart, we depart together. If you stay, I stay."
"I don't think you're very mature either," Stuart said. "Childish!"
Rex said, "But Jeffery had a fever, and I was the one who brought Josephine and him to the hospital. Don't you wonder why Josephine didn't call you?"
This hit a sore spot for Stuart. Although he didn't know why, it was a fact. When Josephine faced an issue, she didn't think to reach out to him for support, leaving him feeling overlooked. She didn't even plan to tell him when something happened.
Stuart looked dejected and said nothing.
Seeing him silent, Rex turned to Steven. "You go. I'm not leaving."
Steven said, "If neither of you is leaving, why should I go back alone? Forget it, I'll stay too."
The three men, each taller and more handsome than the last, stood there, drawing a lot of attention. People passing by couldn't help but take a few more glances.
After a while, a doctor came over and saw the three of them standing at the door. He asked, "Who is the patient's family member?"
Stuart immediately said, "I am!"
"Are you the child's father?" The doctor handed him a form. "Go complete the admission process. The child has pneumonia."
Stuart was shocked. "What? Pneumonia? Is it serious?"
"Let's start with hospitalization," the doctor said. "Why are you all outside? Who's with the child?"
The doctor said this and pushed the door open. Naturally, Stuart wanted to follow.
Rex grabbed him. "You can't go in!"
The doctor looked and said, "The child's father needs to come in. I need to explain some precautions."
Rex said, "He's not the child's father!"
The doctor was stunned and asked, "Then are you?"
"He's not!" Stuart's voice was even louder.
The doctor was puzzled and looked at Steven.
Steven quickly waved his hands. "I'm not either."
Josephine had already come to the door and said, "Doctor, I'm the child's mother. The father isn't here. Please come in." She let the doctor in, then glanced at Stuart and closed the door.
