Chapter 321 Kneel Down and Beg for Forgiveness
Stuart went quiet for a bit. Josephine started feeling uneasy. "So, you still care, huh?"
Stuart was debating whether to tell Josephine he already knew.
Josephine pulled her hand away. Stuart hadn't decided yet, but on instinct, he grabbed her hand again.
"Josephine," he said, looking into her eyes. "Actually, that day, the nurse told me about Jeffery's eyes..."
Josephine suddenly remembered the nurse who saw Jeffery when he first got to the hospital, without his colored contacts. The next day, the nurse even mentioned it. But back then, Josephine didn't think she'd tell Stuart.
"She didn't mean to spill the beans, just blurted out how gorgeous Jeffrey's brown eyes are. I was like, 'Why brown though?"
Josephine was stunned.
Seeing her reaction, Stuart started to panic. He held her hand and cautiously said, "Josephine, I didn't mean to keep it from you."
Josephine looked up at him, tears in her eyes. "So, you figured it out, and that's why you've been so nice to Jeffery these past few days?"
Stuart quickly said, "No way! I stayed outside the hospital room all night that day, and I had no clue what color Jeffery's eyes were! Josephine, no matter whose kid Jeffery is, it won't change how I feel about you! Josephine, I..."
He paused and then said, "I might be a jerk. I even thought that even if you got married, even if you married that Roy, I'd find a way to win you back!"
"Like you did before, locking me up?" Josephine asked.
Stuart looked at her, clearly seeing the pain and struggle in her eyes.
Without any hesitation, Stuart suddenly stood up and knelt in front of her.
Josephine was shocked. "What are you doing? Get up!"
Stuart knelt there, looking at her as he spoke. "Josephine, I'm apologizing, admitting my mistakes. I did a lot of wrong things back then."
"But you don't have to kneel." Josephine hadn't expected Stuart to kneel before her; it was a gesture she found surprising and significant.
"Get up first."
"No," Stuart said. "I don't know how else to show I'm sorry."
"But you don't have to do this."
"Josephine, in my life, besides my grandfather, you're the only one I've ever knelt to. Josephine, I want you to know that from now on, I will respect you, love you, cherish you, and never let you suffer again."
Josephine wanted to stand up, but Stuart held her tightly.
"I know I shouldn't push you like this. Yes, I was low-key thrilled. Maybe you kept it from me because Jeffery could be mine. But I swear, if you're not up for it, Jeffery will always be solely your son. He will always be Jeffery Kalmien."
Josephine's nose tingled, and tears fell.
Stuart reached out to wipe her tears. "Josephine, it's my fault for making you suffer so much. These five years, you must have been very sad and in pain, and I was so stupid that I couldn't find you."
Josephine shook her head while crying. "No, I've had a fulfilling five years. Stuart, I lived well without you."
"I know," Stuart said, enduring the pain in his heart. "But I can't live without you. Josephine, I don't want you to pity me, but after you left, I haven't had a good night's sleep. I don't even dare to dream because in my dreams, you leave me, you don't want me anymore."
Josephine lowered her eyes. "It was you who didn't want me."
"Josephine," Stuart's heart ached seeing her like this. "I'm a jerk, I'm not a good person. You can punish me however you want. Just, please, come back. Pity me, give me a home."
Josephine couldn't control her tears as she covered her face. She always thought she left because she had no love left in her heart. The remaining shreds of hope and affection had been eroded by Stuart.
These five years, she thought she had lived a carefree life. Occasionally, thoughts of Stuart crossed her mind, but she swiftly redirected her focus, determined not to dwell on the painful memories.
However, after five years, Stuart appeared to have undergone a complete transformation, catching her off guard. The things she once loved but couldn't have—Stuart was now kneeling in front of her, offering them with both hands.
Sometimes, she thought, 'God was quite ironic to me. Was this what it meant to go through suffering before experiencing sweetness?'
Josephine found it all very ridiculous. God was really good at playing tricks on people.
With Jeffery, Josephine felt that life had hope. Thinking back, from childhood to now, there seemed to be nothing she could hold onto. Except for a few good friends, even her family didn't care about her.
Did she get a tragic script in life? Was she now experiencing the happiness part?
Josephine admitted that she had feelings for Stuart. She was indeed weak, having been hurt and humiliated like that, yet she still felt moved by Stuart.
But to say that she would marry Stuart and spend a lifetime together? Sorry, she hadn't thought about that yet. She was very satisfied with her current life.
The home Stuart wanted, she couldn't give. She sniffled, "Get up first."
"I know I shouldn't force you. But Josephine, at least give me a chance to repent, let me..."
"Mommy?" Jeffery's voice suddenly came from behind them.
They both looked over at the same time.
Jeffery was rubbing his eyes, looking over sleepily. "Stuart?"
He had woken up and didn't see Josephine, so he came out.
Josephine hurriedly pulled Stuart. "Get up quickly!" It was too embarrassing for Jeffery to see this!
Stuart didn't move, just straightened his back.
He spoke, "Jeffery, I did something wrong and I'm apologizing to your Mommy."
Jeffery's eyes widened. It was the first time he had seen someone kneel in real life.
He turned to Josephine, "Mommy, what did Stuart do wrong to..." His gaze returned to Stuart. To kneel, it must be something serious.
Josephine couldn't help but glare at Stuart. "Get up!"
Jeffery, realizing he wasn't wearing his colored contacts, gasped and turned to run.
Josephine thought something was wrong and quickly chased after him.
Jeffery buried his face in the blanket.
Josephine walked over and asked him, "Jeffery, what's wrong?"
Jeffery peeked out with one eye and whispered, "Mommy, I forgot to wear my colored contacts. Did Stuart see?"
Josephine's heart ached. She bent down and kissed him. "Jeffery, from now on, we won't wear them anymore."
Jeffery was puzzled. "Why?"
"No reason," Josephine said. "Just listen to me, we won't wear them anymore."
Jeffery obediently nodded. "Okay."
Josephine glanced outside and saw Stuart looking in. She said to Jeffery, "Jeffery, don't learn from Stuart. Don't kneel to others easily, understand?"
Jeffery nodded. "I know, Mommy!"
Josephine had a headache. She hadn't expected Stuart to kneel, and even let Jeffery see it. Fortunately, Jeffery didn't ask much.
But Stuart kneeling outside wasn't a solution either.
She comforted Jeffery, guided him back to bed, then emerged, shut the door, and reiterated to Stuart, "You should go."
