Chapter 374 Who Saved Him Back Then
Laura leaned in, her voice low but firm, "Look, I'm being straight with you. Answer my question honestly, and I'll have Steven pull some strings to get you out of here."
Robin, desperate to prove his loyalty, blurted out, "I swear, I'll tell you the truth! If I lie, may I drop dead right here!"
Laura nodded, satisfied. She cut to the chase, "Back at the military base, Angela saved Stuart, right? Did you know about that?"
Robin froze, caught off guard.
Laura noticed his hesitation and pressed on, "You know something, don't you? Spill it, or I'll make sure you rot in here for a few more years!"
Robin hesitated, then asked, "Why are you asking me? What are you trying to figure out?"
Laura replied, "Because you were there. I need to know if Angela really saved him. Does she even have it in her?"
Robin deflected, "Do you know what's going on with Angela now?"
After their last argument, Robin had pleaded with Angela to assist him in getting out, but she disappeared without a trace.
Laura paused, then admitted, "Angela went to Stuart for a project. She said it would be her last dealing with him."
She mentioned the project name, and Robin recognized it. Angela had some nerve, trying to get involved in that.
"But she failed," Laura added. "Oh, and there's some news you might find interesting."
Robin was skeptical. "What news?"
"Josephine isn't a Kalmien."
Robin's jaw dropped, "What?"
Laura continued, "She's actually the lost daughter of the Clarence family. Yeah, that Clarence family. The untouchables."
Robin couldn't quite put his finger on what he was feeling. He'd been infatuated with Josephine for years. Sure, his methods were twisted, but his feelings were real.
He'd even dreamed of getting close to her someday. But now, knowing she was a Clarence, she was even more out of reach.
Seeing Robin's stunned expression, Laura pushed on, "So, Angela probably saw no future and tried to cash in with Stuart. Now, tell me, did she really save him back then?"
Robin took a deep breath, "If I tell you the truth, will you really get me out?"
Laura shot back, "What do you think? Lie to me, and you'll never see daylight again."
Robin clenched his fists, "Alright! I'll tell you! Angela didn't save Stuart!"
Steven's eyes widened. It wasn't Angela?
Laura was equally shocked, "Seriously? It wasn't her?"
She'd suspected Angela wasn't the type to play hero, but she hadn't expected this.
Robin explained, "No, it wasn't her. She was just there. I woke up first, and whoever saved us was already gone."
"So you don't know who it was?"
Robin hesitated.
Laura pounced, "You do know, don't you?"
Robin sighed, "I don't. Angela made me go along with her story, claiming she saved Stuart."
"She made you?" Laura was skeptical, "How? Why would you listen to her?"
"She knew I had a thing for Josephine," Robin admitted, "so she used that to blackmail me."
Laura rolled her eyes, "I don't get it. Why is liking Josephine such a big secret? You and Stuart act like it's the end of the world if anyone finds out."
Robin shrugged, "We were young and stupid. It was all awkward. Anyway, I agreed to keep Angela's secret. She used that to play the hero."
"But that doesn't add up," Laura said, "If she wanted to get close to Stuart, why did she leave the country?"
Robin explained, "Stuart didn't like her. She had no shot with him. I suggested she should just go abroad and let people believe she was his first love, rather than sticking around here with no hope."
It wasn't just talk.
After Angela departed, Robin orchestrated rumors that she was Stuart's first love. The gossip spread like wildfire, and soon everyone bought into it. Naturally, Robin had no intention of confessing to it now.
"She just went along with it?" Laura asked.
Robin nodded, "The whole hero act was fake, and she thought the plan was solid. It made Stuart remember her and brought benefits to the Lopez Family."
Laura scoffed, "She's shameless! After all these years, she probably believes her own lies!"
Robin pleaded, "I've told you everything. Steven, you gotta get me out of here!"
Laura snapped, "What do you mean get you out? You did the crime, now do the time! What do you think the law is for?"
"That's not what you said earlier!"
Laura dismissed him, "I'll have someone send you some food and drinks."
She turned to Steven, "What are you waiting for? Let's go!"
Robin fumed, "Steven! Laura! Get back here!"
Outside, Laura asked Steven, "You're not going soft, are you?"
Steven chuckled, "Even if he was on death row, I wouldn't care. Why would I go soft?"
Laura said, "I can't believe my gut was right! I need to call Jair!"
Steven sighed, "Why are you calling him again?"
"I want him to find out who really saved Stuart! They were at a military base, how could they not know?"
Steven said, "Now that we know it wasn't Angela, isn't that enough? Do we really need to find someone for Stuart to repay?"
"What if it was Josephine?"
Steven laughed, "You're dreaming! That's impossible!"
Laura knew it was a long shot, "I'm just thinking out loud, so what?"
Steven said, "Let's tell Stuart first."
"Right! You call Stuart, I'll call Jair!"
Steven went to contact Stuart, and Laura immediately dialed Jair.
Jair's vacation was ending, and he was gearing up to confess his feelings to Claudia before heading back to the base. He was deep in thought when Laura's call interrupted.
Jair answered, "Ms. Collins, what now?"
Laura said, "Angela didn't save Stuart. Is this how your military base handles things?"
Jair was shocked, "She didn't save him? Then who did?"
Despite the incident occurring at the military base, since those involved were not soldiers, the issue was kept quiet.
