Chapter 483 Are You Hiding Something from Me?
Steven handed him a cigarette, but Stuart declined, "I'd better not. I finally quit. How about you? Still smoking three or four a day?"
Steven replied, "Not necessarily. I've been busy these past two days, so it's been a pack every two days."
"Take care," Stuart said. "Smoking is all harm and no benefit."
"Yeah," Steven's mind was clearly elsewhere, his expression indifferent.
He asked, "Did Josephine say anything when she got back yesterday?"
"Say what?" Stuart touched his nose, feeling a bit guilty.
It wasn't that Josephine didn't want to say anything; she just didn't have the chance.
They had been intimate since she got back, spent half the night together, and then did it again in the morning. After breakfast, he came over.
Josephine didn't have time to say anything to him.
"About my wife, Laura," Steven said, looking at him. "The two of them went to Hustalia for no reason? Don't you think that's strange?"
Stuart said, "Didn't they say they wanted to eat the food there?"
"You believe that?"
Stuart was taken aback.
He did believe it.
So he didn't think much of it.
"So, what are you trying to say?" Stuart asked. "What do you think they went to Hustalia for?"
"I think something's up," Steven said. "But I don't know what."
Stuart laughed, "Suspicion is not a good habit. You should trust her."
"I want to trust her," Steven cursed, "Fuck, but I haven't been in her bed for three days!"
Stuart was surprised, "You guys are sleeping in separate beds?"
"Of course not!" Steven denied, then added, "It started last week. She said she wasn't feeling well and didn't let me touch her. A few days ago, she found another excuse and made me sleep in the next room."
Stuart frowned. "That doesn't seem normal."
"See, I told you," Steven said. "So, their trip to Hustalia can't just be about eating."
"But Josephine didn't say anything to me," Stuart said. "However, when I messaged her, they did seem to be eating together a lot."
"Anyway, Laura's been acting strange these past few days," Steven said. "I asked you out to see if you could find a chance to ask Josephine and see if you can find out anything."
Stuart said, "Okay, I'll ask. But, are you suspecting Laura of having an affair?"
"Of course not!"
Stuart was puzzled. "Then what do you mean?"
"I'm afraid she's hiding something from me," Steven said. "You know about our past. If she really is hiding something, I don't have the right to say anything."
Stuart understood the feeling of being held down for a lifetime because of one mistake.
"But don't overthink it. Laura may seem unreasonable, but she cares deeply for you." Stuart could see that Laura and Steven were a pair of happy couple.
Although Steven always seemed to be the one appeasing Laura, looking like he was suffering.
But they were a couple who willingly played their roles.
It was quite good.
And from what Josephine had told him about their past, Stuart felt that Laura was indeed good to Steven.
Even when Steven was diagnosed with a terminal illness, Laura stayed by his side.
After all, in the face of adversity, some couples chose to escape and protect themselves, which was the norm.
Mutual love and enduring hardship together were rare.
He was grateful that both he and Steven had found it.
After comforting Steven, the two had a meal, and Stuart went straight to the office.
He worked until almost four o'clock, then drove to the Clarence Mansion.
To pick up Josephine and then pick up Jeffery from school.
This kind of life was incredibly happy for Stuart.
Looking at his current life and thinking about the five years of living hell he had endured before, he felt a lot of emotions.
After chatting with Nicole for a while, they left.
On the way to the kindergarten, Stuart asked Josephine, "Did you guys just eat in Hustalia? Didn't meet any friends?"
Josephine said, "It was a last-minute decision, too sudden. Liam was out of town for a meeting, so we didn't see him."
"What about other friends?"
"Other friends aren't as important as the food Laura wanted to eat," Josephine said. "So we just wandered around and ate all day."
"Did Laura say anything?"
"Say what?" Josephine sensed something was off. "Did Steven ask you to meet for something?"
"He said he and Laura have been sleeping in separate beds for seven or eight days."
"Why are they sleeping in separate beds?"
"If I knew, would I be asking you?" Stuart said. "That's why I'm asking if Laura is mad at him."
"I don't think so. Laura didn't say anything."
"Then what's going on with her?"
"Maybe it's her period?"
"I don't know. But it shouldn't be. If it were, Steven wouldn't be reacting so strongly. Besides, she doesn't need to sleep in separate beds for that. It's not like he's an animal who can't control himself."
"Then I don't know," Josephine said. "Laura seemed normal to me, not like she was angry."
"Why don't you subtly ask her?"
"Can't I just ask directly?"
"No, if she finds out Steven asked me to ask you, she might get mad."
Josephine thought about it. With Laura's temper, she might indeed get mad.
She said, "Okay, I'll ask her tonight."
As it turned out, she didn't have to find Laura; Laura came to her.
"What's up?"
Laura called.
Josephine answered and asked what was going on.
Laura asked, "Have you had dinner?"
"Yes," Josephine looked at the time. "It's almost eight."
"What did you have?" Laura asked. "Who cooked?"
"The maid," Josephine said. "Seafood soup, shrimp..."
"No need to list the dishes," Laura said. "Um... has Stuart been cooking for you lately?"
"He cooks occasionally," Josephine said. "Why?"
She sensed Laura was hesitant, something was definitely off.
Laura said, "Do you remember the last time I was at your place, and Stuart cooked Tom Yum?"
"Yes," Josephine said. "You want some?"
"Yes, yes!" Laura said. "I suddenly want some!"
"I remember you didn't like it much last time."
"I didn't like it then, but I do now," Laura said, acting coy. "Please, Josephine, ask your husband to make me a plate?"
"Now?"
"Now! I want it now!" Laura said, sounding pitiful. "I haven't had dinner yet, I'm starving."
Josephine laughed, "I'll ask him to make it. You come over."
Laura was immediately happy, "Great! I'm coming over!"
"Are you coming alone?"
"Yes!"
"What about Steven?"
"Forget him!"
"Laura, tell me the truth, are you hiding something from me?"
