Chapter 470 Expressing Something
Nicole said, "I don't want to talk to you."
Josephine, standing next to Gerald, said, "Mom, you just said you didn't mind if the kids chose not to have children. Gerald already has Ulysses, and you're still dissatisfied with him."
"I'm not asking him to get married and have kids," Nicole said. "I'm asking him to find a companion. In the future, when Ulysses has his own family, he'll be an old man, all alone. How pitiful!"
Gerald said, "Mom, don't worry. When I get old, I'll go to a nursing home, listen to some plays, go fishing. It will be so much fun."
"Who wouldn't want a wife at your age?" Nicole remarked. "All you care about is listening to plays and playing cards. You're not even forty, yet you're behaving like you're eighty!"
Gerald was used to being criticized every day. He said, "I'm going to take a shower and change clothes."
"Whenever we talk about him, he changes the subject," Nicole said. "I really don't know what to do with him."
Josephine quickly said, "Mom, don't worry about Gerald. If it really comes to it, when Gerald gets old, Stuart and I will take care of him."
"People say that couples who marry young can keep each other company in old age. He'll regret it one day!"
Gerald knew Nicole was probably talking about him behind his back. He took off his clothes and put his phone aside.
Just as he put it down, the phone rang, and when he picked it up and glanced at it, he saw it was a message from Kathy.
Since the last time he replied, Gerald hadn't responded to her.
Kathy still sent messages every day. Gerald would look at them when he had time, but sometimes he wouldn't see her messages for two days.
Thinking about what Nicole had just said, Gerald smiled. He put the phone down and went to take a shower.
Claudia woke up feeling a bit groggy. She was dazed for a moment before she remembered she was pregnant.
It seemed to be getting dark outside. She lay there for a while, picked up her phone to check the time, and saw she had missed calls and a message from Jair.
Jair: [Claudia, I called my parents. They will come to Celestia Springs to take care of you. I'm sorry, I'll come to see you as soon as I finish my work.]
Claudia rubbed her eyes and called back.
"Claudia?" It was Jair's mother, Thalia Fairchild, who answered. Her voice was filled with surprise, "You're pregnant?"
"Mom," Claudia called out. Since getting married, she had started calling Thalia that.
Thalia quickly said, "Are you feeling uncomfortable? Is there anything you want to eat? Your dad and I are packing up now, and we'll be there soon!"
"Mom, you and Dad don't need to come. I'm at Josephine's place, and I'm fine," Claudia quickly said. "I'm not feeling uncomfortable."
Claudia was naturally gentle and kind. Since meeting Jair's parents, she had a good relationship with them. But she was still the younger generation, and even though she was pregnant, she didn't feel right having Jair's parents take care of her.
"Claudia, you're carrying a Cook family child. Why be so polite with us?" Thalia said. "Jair is at the military base and can't take care of you. Of course, your dad and I have to take responsibility!"
Claudia couldn't persuade them, so she said a few more words and hung up, then called Jair.
Jair's phone went unanswered. Claudia had no choice but to call Jair's parents again, saying she wanted her own parents to come instead, so they wouldn't have to make the trip.
Jair's parents, though eager to take care of Claudia, understood that her own parents would make her feel more comfortable.
Claudia finally convinced them and then called her own parents, who were enjoying their retirement in the countryside.
Because of Claudia's special condition, the doctor had specifically advised her to rest and take care of the baby, so she couldn't go back to Hustalia for now. Her parents would have to come to her.
Claudia's parents were overjoyed at the news. They had been worried that their daughter might be mistreated after marrying into the Cook family. After all, the Cook family was wealthy.
But they had come to know the Cook family well, and now Claudia was pregnant so soon. This was good news.
When Claudia came out of the bedroom, she had already arranged everything with her parents. They would pack up tonight and come to Celestia Springs tomorrow. Since Jair had a house in Celestia Springs, they would stay there.
When Nicole heard that Claudia was leaving the next day, she expressed her regret. "Since your parents are coming, I won't keep you. But I'll have Blair Ember come over to cook for you. Blair Ember makes great soups, and you need to nourish yourself now."
Claudia wanted to decline, but Josephine said, "Just agree, or my mom won't be at ease."
Claudia had no choice but to agree.
Laura and Steven came to bring Claudia some things and stayed for dinner.
As they were leaving, Nicole said to Laura, "Laura, now that Claudia is pregnant, we're waiting for your good news next."
Laura smiled and said, "Got it!"
Once in the car, Laura asked Steven, "Is that what you're thinking too?"
Steven didn't dare say anything, "What? What am I thinking?"
"Don't pretend," Laura said. "Seeing Claudia pregnant, are you envious?"
"Not really," Steven said. "Other people being pregnant is their business. It has nothing to do with us."
"Alright," Laura said. "If you're envious, just say so. Why are you so afraid to tell the truth?"
Steven laughed, "Yes, I'm envious. So if I say it, will you take pity on me and give me a child too?"
"Keep dreaming," Laura said. "After all, daydreaming isn't illegal."
Steven laughed, "I knew you weren't that kind-hearted."
"Actually, it was really tough for Josephine when she was pregnant," Laura sighed. "Even though she didn't talk about it much, I knew. It's really hard for women to have children. Why can't men have children?"
"If I could have children, we would have had ten by now," Steven said. "It's okay. If you want to have a child, we will. If you don't, we won't."
"Really?"
Steven looked at her, "Yes, really."
"Alright," Laura said. "Since you're being so good, I'll let you daydream a bit longer."
Steven hugged her and laughed, "Okay, then I'll think about having a daughter. She'll be as beautiful as you and have a similar temperament."
"Then I want a son," Laura said. "Boys are tougher."
Steven said, "True, if they make mistakes, you can bear to scold a son, but not a daughter. It's really tough. Should I want a son or a daughter?"
Laura said, "You can think about us having twins, or even triplets, so we have both."
"Forget it, I won't think about it," Steven said. "Being too greedy isn't good."
He kissed Laura, "I'm already very happy that you married me. Everything else will happen naturally."
Laura hummed softly, "That's more like it."
Steven asked, "Now that Claudia is pregnant, should we do something to show our support?"
"What kind of support?"
