Chapter 311 Let Me See Jeffery
Josephine walked back into the hospital room and plopped down by the bed, feeling a bit out of it.
Just a moment ago, Stuart had hugged her and started crying for some reason she couldn't figure out. After a bit, he let her go.
She didn't bother asking why and just came back to the room.
Luckily, Jeffery was asleep when she got back, so Stuart probably didn't notice his eyes.
'This can't keep going on,' Josephine thought with a sigh.
The sun was fully up now, and Jeffery woke up, blinking his eyes open and softly calling out, "Mommy."
Josephine's heart ached a little. "Are you hungry? What do you want to eat?" she asked.
Jeffery shook his head. "Not hungry."
People used to say the squeaky wheel got the grease, it was the adults who decided which kid got pampered.
To Josephine, a quiet and sensible kid like Jeffery tugged at her heartstrings even more.
After freshening up, Jeffery put on his contact lenses without a fuss.
Josephine didn't say anything, just gave him a kiss on the forehead.
A little while later, there was a knock on the door. She opened it to find Stuart with breakfast.
"Thanks," Josephine said, taking the food. "Wanna come in?"
"Can I?" Stuart asked.
Josephine stepped aside. "Sure, come on in."
They walked into the room, and Josephine said, "Jeffery, Stuart's here."
Jeffery greeted him politely, "Hello, Stuart."
"Hey, Jeffery," Stuart said, standing by the bed and staring at him. "Feeling any better?"
"I'm fine," Jeffery replied.
Josephine started setting out the food, filling the table with dishes.
"Why'd you get so much?" she asked.
"Jeffery's got a cold. He needs light but nutritious food, so I got a variety, but not a lot of each," Stuart explained.
The dishes were small but still too much for just two people. "Have you eaten?" she asked Stuart.
"Yeah, I have."
Josephine turned to Jeffery. "Do you want to eat in bed or come down?"
"I can come down," Jeffery said, starting to move, but Stuart picked him up.
"Thanks," Josephine said.
Stuart sat on the sofa with Jeffery. "I'll take care of him. You eat too."
Jeffery squirmed a bit. "I can eat by myself. Put me down."
Josephine chimed in, "He can manage on his own."
Stuart reluctantly set him down.
Jeffery sat quietly by himself.
Josephine set up his plate and utensils. "I'll go wash up. You start eating."
"I'll wait for you, Mommy."
"Be good and start eating. You need to get an IV later."
"Okay."
Josephine went to the bathroom, and Jeffery obediently started eating.
Stuart watched him intently.
After a while, Jeffery looked up. "Stuart, can you stop staring at me? It's kinda creepy."
"Sorry," Stuart said, grabbing a tissue quickly.
Jeffery looked at him curiously. "What's wrong? Were you crying?"
"No," Stuart smiled. "My eyes are just a bit uncomfortable today."
"Yeah, they look red and swollen, like you've been crying. Are you sure you didn't cry?"
"Nope."
"Well, you should see a doctor later since we're at the hospital... or you can let my mommy take a look. She's really good!"
Jeffery's face lit up with that pure, innocent look only kids have when he mentioned Josephine.
Stuart couldn't help but pinch his cheek. "Jeffery, you're a good kid."
"I'm not," Jeffery said, looking down shyly. "Don't pinch me. I don't like it."
When Josephine came out, she noticed the atmosphere between them was pretty good.
She knew Jeffery was always well-behaved around her, but he was usually pretty cold towards strangers.
That aloof attitude, honestly, was a lot like Stuart's.
Seeing Josephine come out, Stuart quickly handed her the utensils. "You should eat before it gets cold."
"Thanks," Josephine said, sitting down to eat.
Stuart watched her and asked, "Is it good? How does it taste?"
"It's pretty good," Josephine replied.
"Glad to hear it. It's tough to cook here, or I would've made something for you."
"No need," Josephine said. "It's the 30th today. You should head back early to be with Grandpa."
"I already told Grandpa," Stuart replied, glancing at his watch. "He should be on his way."
Josephine was surprised. "Why'd you make him come all this way?" She reached for her phone.
Stuart stopped her. "Jeffery's sick. Can't Grandpa come to see him?"
Josephine frowned. "Grandpa's old, and Jeffery just has pneumonia."
"Just pneumonia?" Stuart pushed her hand back. "Come on, eat. Let's not argue about this."
Jeffery piped up, "Grandpa?"
Stuart explained, "He's my and your Mommy's grandpa. You should call him Great-Grandpa."
Jeffery nodded. "Oh."
But then he looked at Josephine. "Mommy, Stuart's eyes look sick. Can you check them?"
Josephine hadn't paid much attention to Stuart before, but when she finally took a good look at him, memories of their intimate moments rushed back to her.
Upon hearing Jeffery's words, she lifted her gaze to find Stuart's eyes truly red and puffy.
"What's wrong? Are your eyes itchy? How do they feel?" she asked.
Stuart shrugged. "Maybe last night, my eyes were a bit itchy, and I rubbed them a few times. That's probably why."
Josephine reached out, flipped his eyelids, and said, "It doesn't seem like a big deal. Keep an eye on it, and if it doesn't get better, use some eye drops."
After eating, Stuart helped clean up the table.
A little while later, the doctor came for rounds, and the nurse came to give an injection.
Stuart stepped out to take a phone call.
After the doctor and nurse left, he came back in. "Grandpa's here. I'll go get him."
"I'll go with you," Josephine said.
"Why would you go?" Stuart replied. "You stay with Jeffery. Be good."
He left after saying that.
Josephine was stunned for a few seconds. Stuart's "Be good" seemed to echo in her ears.
"Mommy?" Jeffery called out.
Hearing Jeffery call her, she snapped back to reality. "What's up?"
"Will Great-Grandpa be very strict?" Jeffery asked.
Josephine sat by the bed and held his hand. "Great-Grandpa is very nice. He will definitely like you."
"Then I will like Great-Grandpa too."
When Josephine first came back, she went to see Andrew. At that time, she was also conflicted about whether to tell Andrew about Jeffery.
In the end, she told Andrew that after she left Stuart, she had a child. She didn't have the courage to tell Andrew face-to-face, so she called him later.
Andrew was silent on the other end of the phone for a long time before he finally said, "That's good news. Josephine, you're so wonderful. Your son must be very well-behaved too."
Josephine almost cried at that moment. She still remembered Todd's attitude when she told him about it. That cold, indifferent, and heartless tone still lingered in her memory.
Andrew had no blood relation to her but had always been kind to her. Now he was genuinely happy for her.
Josephine felt a deep sense of guilt. She even thought about finding the right opportunity to tell Andrew the truth. But she hadn't found the right moment yet.
She chatted with Jeffery for a while, but Stuart and Andrew still hadn't come up.
Why was it taking so long? Josephine couldn't help but send Stuart a message, but he didn't reply. That was strange.
Josephine wondered if she should call Andrew. Could it be that Stuart hadn't found him?
Just as she was thinking this, she heard a noise at the door. She quickly got up and opened it.
Stuart was helping Andrew stand outside the hospital room.
Josephine saw him and was momentarily stunned.
The last time she saw Andrew, her eyes had reddened at first sight. Because she had been away for five years, and Andrew had visibly aged a lot.
But today, Andrew looked energetic.
"Josephine!" Andrew's voice was strong and full of energy. "Where's Jeffery? Let me see my great-grandson!"
Andrew had made it clear that even if she and Stuart were to divorce, he would still see her as his granddaughter. Therefore, referring to Jeffery as his great-grandson wasn't out of place.
She quickly said, "He's inside. Please come in, Grandpa."
