Chapter 437 I Have Cancer
He turned to Josephine and asked, "Josephine, what do you think?"
Josephine hadn't seriously considered marriage yet, but once she and Stuart reunited, it seemed unavoidable. With Jeffery already part of their lives and the pressure from both sets of grandparents to provide a complete family, marriage appeared to be the next logical step.
However, Josephine was caught off guard by how quickly it all happened. Was this really happening?
She originally thought that it wouldn't matter if they got married a bit later. But thinking about Laura's attitude towards marriage, if the three of them got married together and it could change her mind, maybe it was worth a try.
She spoke up, "I think it's great too. Laura, in that case, why don't the three of us have a wedding together?"
Laura didn't want to get married, but if the three of them did it together, she definitely wouldn't delay the other two's wedding because of her.
Laura didn't expect Josephine to agree so readily. She looked at the two men beside her, then stood up and pulled Josephine aside. "Come on, let's talk alone!"
She pulled Josephine out of the private room and said, "Are you crazy? You and Stuart just got back together, and you're already thinking about marrying him?"
Josephine said, "When you meet the right person, time doesn't matter. I trust him, even if we've only been back together for a day, we can still get married."
"Stuart really knows how to charm you."
"Wasn't it you who suggested we get married together?"
"That was..."
"What was that? Did you think I would refuse?" Josephine looked at her, "I don't care, you said it, so you can't back out now."
Laura said helplessly, "It's a good idea, but think about it, Steven has a lot of friends who overlap with Stuart's friends, especially some business partners. If we have a wedding together, wouldn't it be chaotic?"
"You don't need to worry about that," Josephine said. "I believe Mr. Bailey will handle it well."
Laura felt like she had trapped herself; after all, it was her idea. She said, "I haven't made up my mind yet."
Josephine looked at her, "Laura, honestly, you and Steven can really get married. What are you still worried about? Considering Stuart's age, Jeffery is already over four. Steven is even older than Stuart, and you two aren't even married yet. Isn't he anxious?"
"If he's so anxious to have kids, he can find someone else..."
"Laura!" Josephine glared at her angrily, "Have you considered his feelings when you say things like that? You don't really mean it, so why say it? If Steven really found someone else to have kids with, you'd be crying!"
"Hmph!" Laura lifted her chin, "I wouldn't cry."
"You're just saying that," Josephine said. "It's settled then, the three of us will get married together. If you don't, Claudia and I will wait for you."
"You don't care, you already have a kid, but don't delay Claudia!" Laura got anxious, "Why wait for me!"
"Exactly, if you don't want to delay Claudia, then hurry up and marry Steven!"
In the room, Stuart said, "This is a good idea. What do you think?"
Steven said, "It's a good idea, but don't forget, even though Laura suggested it, she'll probably be the one to oppose it in the end."
"She suggested it and then opposes it? Why would she do that?"
"She probably didn't expect Josephine to agree so quickly."
Stuart couldn't help but feel a bit smug, "Well, what can I say, Josephine and I have a great relationship."
Steven was silent. Stuart was showing off in front of him? Had he already forgotten how dejected he was when he couldn't win Josephine over?
Forget it, he wouldn't stoop to Stuart's level.
"I'm telling you, if we really have a wedding together, you should definitely thank us," Stuart said. "I don't think Laura wants to get married."
Steven was also helpless, "That's true."
Stuart was curious, "I only knew you two had a falling out before and then made up. But because of this, Laura has been mad at you. What exactly happened?"
Steven said, "It's nothing."
Seeing that he didn't want to talk about it, Stuart didn't press further, "I see. It's your business, you two can sort it out."
Steven thought for a moment and then said, "I did make a mistake back then."
Stuart said, "Did you cheat on her?"
Steven said, "It's a matter of principle. If I had made that kind of mistake, do you think with Laura's personality, I'd still be alive?"
Stuart was puzzled, "Then what was it?"
He couldn't think of anything that would make Laura so angry that she couldn't forgive Steven even now.
Steven was silent for two seconds and then asked, "Do you know about thyroid cancer?"
Stuart was stunned. How did they end up talking about cancer?
Although Josephine was a doctor, Stuart didn't know much about these things. He just felt that any disease related to "cancer" couldn't be good—a terminal illness.
Steven continued, "I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer back then."
Stuart was shocked. "You? Cancer? It must have been a misdiagnosis, right?" Looking at Steven, he didn't seem like someone who had cancer.
Steven asked, "Do you think that just because it's cancer, it's always terminal and always fatal?"
Stuart nodded, "Isn't it?"
"That's what I thought back then," Steven said. "At that time, Laura and I had been dating for over a year, and our relationship was at its best. When I found out I had cancer, I was devastated."
Stuart didn't say anything.
Steven continued, "I was devastated, not because I was sick, but because I thought, what would she do without me? If I died young, what would she do alone?"
Steven smiled and continued, "Don't be fooled by how submissive I am now; back then, Laura was really good to me. But the better she was to me, the less I wanted to hold her back after I got sick."
Stuart understood.
As expected, Steven confessed, "So, I told her we should break up," wiping his face as he spoke.
He continued, "If I had told her I was sick and wanted to break up, with her temper, she wouldn't have agreed."
"So what did you do?" Stuart asked.
Steven said, "I staged a scene with someone, deliberately letting her see it, making her think I had cheated."
Stuart was shocked. Thinking about Laura's personality, Stuart thought Steven was really bold!
No wonder Steven had been so submissive to Laura all these years. Even if there was a reason, it was still too hurtful.
He asked, "What happened next? Was it a misdiagnosis?"
Steven said, "No."
Stuart exclaimed, "What?"
