Chapter 318 Anyway, They Can't Be Together

Two hours ago, the hospital was way quieter than usual for a morning.

Around five, the night shift nurse came in to take temperatures. After asking the usual questions and jotting down the info, she asked, "Why isn't the kid's dad coming in?"

Josephine was caught off guard, "The kid's dad?"

"Yeah, the tall, handsome guy," the nurse chimed in. "I spotted him hanging around outside for a bit. Actually, I caught sight of him in the wee hours too."

Upon hearing this, Josephine dashed to the door, flung it open, and laid eyes on Stuart.

She blurted out, "When did you get here?"

Before Stuart could answer, the nurse came out and said, "The kid's doing well; you can go in now."

Josephine thanked the nurse and, after she left, looked at Stuart.

Stuart rubbed his nose and admitted, "Last night, after you hung up, I came over."

"You waited outside all night?"

Stuart quickly said, "It didn't feel that long; it went by fast."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"You must've been resting," Stuart said. "You've been taking care of Jeffery and are already exhausted. I couldn't do much, so I didn't want to disturb you."

Josephine was silent for a few seconds, then turned around, "Come in, Jeffery's awake."

Stuart reached out and grabbed her hand. "Josephine."

Josephine didn't pull away and looked back at him, "What's up?"

Stuart gently squeezed her fingers, feeling a rush of emotion but couldn't find the words.

From their past closeness to their later distance, to now, feeling like strangers.

Well, that was how it felt a while ago.

And now, holding Josephine's hand, Stuart felt he had made some progress.

Even if it was just a little, for him, it was a big step forward in their relationship!

Josephine saw him staring at her without speaking, his intense gaze making her face feel warm.

She pulled her hand away and turned her head awkwardly, "Are you coming in or not?"

Stuart quickly followed her into the room.

Jeffery had slept a lot yesterday and was in good spirits today.

Stuart asked him, "Jeffery, you feeling better? nywhere still giving you trouble?"

Jeffery said, "I'm fine, no issues."

Stuart noticed that Jeffery was really well-behaved and smart.

From the time Robin kidnapped him, it was clear that despite his young age, he was exceptionally calm and composed in the face of danger. He also proved to be a polite and level-headed kid in his day-to-day interactions.

Stuart couldn't help but look at Josephine, "Thank you."

Josephine was surprised, "Thank me?"

'Thank you for raising Jeffery so well. And, thank you for all your hard work. All these years, I haven't been by your side, leaving you to take care of Jeffery alone,' Stuart thought to himself.

But these words, he only dared to think in his heart; he couldn't say them out loud now.

"Thank you for letting me in," he said. "Otherwise, I'd still be standing outside."

In front of Jeffery, Stuart's gaze was more restrained.

All morning, while Jeffery was getting an IV, Stuart read children's stories to him. His voice was very pleasant—deep and soothing—making the stories even more engaging.

Josephine hadn't rested well last night, and now that Stuart was looking after Jeffery, she felt at ease and gradually fell asleep to the sound of Stuart's voice.

She fell asleep leaning on the edge of the bed.

Stuart didn't catch on at first until Jeffery spoke up, "Stuart, my mom's knocked out."

It was only then that Stuart spotted her.

"She won't like sleeping like this," Jeffery said. "Can you move my mommy to the bed?"

Stuart had already thought of this, but he didn't dare to do it in front of Jeffery.

Now that Jeffery had suggested it, he naturally agreed.

After five years, he once again carried the sleeping Josephine.Josephine was a light sleeper and woke up as soon as he moved her.

Stuart still carried her, looking down at her, and then gently placed her on the nearby bed.

"Sleep," he said, pulling a thin blanket over her. "Don't worry, I'm here."

Josephine turned to her side, touched her chest where her heart was beating, and slowly closed her eyes.

Unaware of the charm he had unintentionally displayed, Stuart returned to Jeffery's bedside and continued to read stories to him in a low voice.

Since Josephine had already informed Laura and Liam, they both knew that Jeffery would be discharged in the afternoon. And then they would go to Liam's hospital.

Originally, Liam had planned to pick them up, but he found out that Stuart had arrived early in the morning.

In the afternoon, after finishing the IV and completing the discharge procedures, Stuart personally drove Josephine and Jeffery back to the city.

Stuart didn't want them to stay at Liam's hospital, which was also where Josephine used to work. But he had no say in the matter.

Now that the situation had just started to improve, he didn't want to strain his relationship with Josephine over this.

Moreover, he was now certain that there was no possibility between Liam and Josephine.

Although he still felt jealous, he couldn't help it.

'Oh well, Liam and Josephine can't be together anyway, so it doesn't matter if I feel a bit jealous,' Stuart thought.

When they arrived at the hospital, not only was Liam there, but Laura brought Steven, and Rex came as well.

He could relax his vigilance towards Liam. But Rex was still a real competitor. Stuart didn't dare to be careless.

Especially since it was Rex who had taken Jeffery to the hospital before. He definitely had ulterior motives and had to be guarded against!

Liam had arranged the best room in the hospital for Jeffery, which not only had a bedroom and living room but also a kitchen where they could cook.

Stuart was quite satisfied. He was ready to show off his cooking skills. So he looked at Josephine, hoping she would quickly send Rex and the others away.

But Rex didn't leave. And Josephine couldn't bring herself to ask him to leave.

In the end, it was Laura who said Jeffery needed more rest and left with Steven.

Before leaving, she glanced at Rex and asked, "Aren't you leaving?"

Rex really had no reason to stay.

But if he left, he wouldn't let Stuart stay either.

He asked, "Mr. Haustia, shouldn't you be leaving too?"

Stuart realized that if he didn't leave, Rex might stay. Just as well, he needed to go back and get some ingredients. So he didn't hesitate and left with Rex.

But Stuart didn't expect that shortly after he left, Angela arrived.

Josephine didn't expect it either.

Angela came in holding a bouquet of flowers.

After entering, she smiled and said, "Long time no see, Josephine. I heard your son is sick, so I came to see him."

Josephine wasn't too close to Angela; they used to be arch-enemies, with Angela siding with Stuart.

But since she came to visit, Josephine couldn't just kick her out. She said, "Thank you. Did you come back from abroad?"

"Yes, I'm back," Angela glanced at Jeffery. "Your son is really handsome, and his eyes are beautiful."

Josephine said, "Jeffery needs rest now, so I won't keep you."

Angela said, "I understand. By the way, I ordered a nutritious meal for Jeffery, which will be delivered later. I wanted to cook something for him myself, but Stuart said my hands are for painting and wouldn't let me cook. I had no choice but to listen to him. He's just too protective of me."

Josephine looked at her, "Are you done?"

Angela smiled, "Alright, I won't disturb you any longer." After leaving the ward, the smile on her face disappeared.
