Chapter 429 I Don't Want It
While they were chatting, Claudia's phone rang. It was a client calling.
This was a big client, not only ordering a wedding dress from her but also outfits for all the groomsmen and bridesmaids.
Claudia glanced at the lively scene in the private room, said a word, and went out to take the call.
Seeing Claudia leave, Laura dared to tease Jair, "Mr. Cook, now that Claudia's gone, why does it seem like your eyes are following her?"
Jair chuckled, "Can't help it, I like her."
"Didn't expect you to be so smooth-talking," Laura said. "I always thought you were a tough guy."
Jair said, "I'm tough with outsiders, but of course, I treat my family and loved ones differently."
"But some men only dare to lose their temper with those close to them," Laura said. "We had a neighbor who lost money in business, was very humble outside, but would beat his wife at home. We could hear him yelling from our house."
"Such men do exist," Jair said. "But men who lack responsibility usually don't end up well, right?"
Laura said, "You guessed right. Later, when he was abusing his wife, a neighbor called the police. When the police arrived, his wife had lost too much blood and couldn't be saved. He was sentenced."
Josephine said, "Such men deserve to be punished! His wife was unlucky to have married him."
"No choice, she was deceived," Laura sighed. "So, in some ways, we women are still a vulnerable group. Usually, it's women who suffer from domestic violence."
Stuart and Steven didn't dare say anything. Jair spoke up, "Things are much better now, right? Many women know how to protect their rights. And I've heard that some women abuse men too."
"That's very rare," Laura said. "Claudia is petite and cute. You better not bully her!"
Jair said, "How could I bully her? I can't even pamper her enough."
He then looked at his watch. "Why is Claudia taking so long on the phone?" He got up, "I'll go check."
After he left, Laura said, "Definitely in the honeymoon phase, it's different from long-term relationships."
Steven put his arm around her shoulder, "What's different? I still feel like we're in the honeymoon phase."
Laura said, "Stop it. Looking at Jair and then at you, I don't know why, but I feel a bit disgusted."
Stuart and Josephine exchanged a glance and couldn't help but laugh.
Meanwhile, Jair went out but didn't see Claudia outside the private room. He was about to call her when he heard an argument not far away and recognized a familiar voice. Looking up, he saw Claudia.
Claudia felt quite unlucky. She didn't expect to run into David while taking a call; they hadn't met since they broke up.
David was initially satisfied with Claudia, but her conservatism and refusal to be intimate frustrated him.
Considering himself a normal man with normal needs, he wondered why he couldn't find other women if Claudia wouldn't let him touch her.
Moreover, he believed Claudia was easy to deceive, which made him bold in his actions. David planned to marry Claudia, thinking her personality would prevent her from making a fuss after marriage.. But Claudia broke up with him as soon as she found out, and David couldn't swallow this.
Seeing Claudia today, he felt even more resentful. She didn't look old and haggard as he had imagined. On the contrary, she looked like a budding flower, youthful and beautiful.
David saw her first. His feet moved on their own, and he walked over, calling her name, "Claudia!"
Claudia had just finished her call and was about to go back. She turned around and frowned. "It's you?"
David looked her up and down, his gaze very presumptuous. "You're doing well now, eating at a place like this?"
He knew Claudia's family used to be wealthy but went bankrupt later. He thought even if her family went bankrupt, they would still be richer than most. But Claudia's family really had no assets left, which was one reason he dared to bully her.
Claudia didn't want to deal with him. But she was curious, with David's financial situation, he shouldn't be eating here either.
David read the doubt in her eyes. He raised an eyebrow and adjusted his tie. "Regretting it now? I'm doing very well."
As he spoke, a middle-aged woman walked over, looking about forty or fifty, with an unapproachable face.
"David, everyone's here. What are you doing here?" Lyanna Patel walked over, looking displeased. When she saw Claudia, her face turned even darker, "Who is she?"
"An old friend," David smiled. "Saw her and said hi."
Lyanna snorted, "Not chatting her up because she's pretty, are you?"
David quickly said, "Of course not. She's not pretty and can't compare to you at all, Ms. Patel. You're a blooming rose, she's just a nobody."
Claudia frowned as she watched. The relationship between David and Lyanna seemed abnormal. Lyanna's tone when asking about her had a hint of jealousy. Could David be with her?
Lyanna smiled, "You know how to talk. Stick with me, and you'll benefit. Finish up here, I'll wait in the private room." With that she left.
David watched her leave, his fawning smile disappearing immediately. He looked at Claudia with a threatening gaze. "Don't overthink, she's just my boss."
His explanation made Claudia understand.
Seeing Claudia's expression, David got angry. "I told you not to overthink! Besides, it just proves my charm! What about you, still single? No man would like someone who doesn't know how to have fun!"
"I do." A deep, powerful voice sounded in their ears. Claudia was stunned. David looked over too.
"Why did you come out?" Claudia asked.
Jair walked over and put his arm around her shoulder. "I wondered why you were taking so long, turns out you ran into a lunatic."
"Who are you calling a lunatic?" Seeing Jair and Claudia so close, David got angry. "Who are you? Oh, did you pick up the woman I discarded?"
Claudia's eyes turned red. "David, stop talking nonsense!"
David saw Jair was taller, more handsome, and wearing expensive clothes, and felt even more unbalanced. He said, "Am I wrong? Weren't you my girlfriend? We were about to get engaged, then I dumped you, and now you're with him. So, isn't he picking up the woman I discarded?"
As soon as he finished speaking, there was a loud bang, and a fist landed heavily on his face.
David screamed and fell to the ground.
