Chapter 21 Fifty Million Dollar Protection Fee
"What? We gotta pay protection money, and it's a million bucks?" Jack was floored, "That kid's gotta be nuts. He beats up my guys and now wants protection money? And a million bucks? Can he even swing that?"
"A million bucks? No way he can cover that," Ted shook his head, "Even if he had the cash, would he really fork it over? He's just screwing with us!"
"So, what now, Jack?" Ted asked again.
"Tell that kid to hang tight. I'm heading over there right now!" Jack gritted his teeth, huffing.
"Got it!" Ted turned to Noah. "Kid, Jack says to wait here."
"Fine, I'll wait," Noah replied coolly.
"Mr. Anderson, maybe you should lay low for a bit," Grace said, walking over with a worried look. "The customers are all talking. Jack's the mob boss around here. If he shows up, you will be in deep trouble. If you don't want to hide, we should at least call the cops!"
"No need. I'll wait here," Noah waved her off, unfazed.
"Alright then," Grace said, seeing Noah's resolve. She stood to the side, visibly anxious.
Fifteen minutes later, the sound of engines roared as four cars pulled up.
The car doors swung open, and a group of street thugs piled out. There were over twenty of them. Leading the pack was a middle-aged man with an earring, shirtless and covered in tattoos, looking menacing and intimidating.
The customers' faces changed when they saw the man, their expressions nervous. They turned their gaze to Noah, as if looking at a dead.
Noah had no idea what he was getting into, beating up so many of Jack's men. Jack wouldn't let him off easy.
"Jack!" Ted greeted him with a look of relief and immediately pointed at Noah. "That's the kid who beat up our guys and said we have to pay a million bucks in protection money."
Jack's cold eyes locked onto Noah. "Kid, which gang are you with, daring to mess with my men?"
He wanted to know Noah's background right away. The thugs Jack brought with him surrounded Noah, ready to act on Jack's command.
"I'm not with any gang," Noah said calmly, hands behind his back.
"What?" Jack frowned, taken aback by Noah's response. "You beat up so many of my guys. What do you think we should do about it?"
Normally, Jack would have immediately retaliated, teaching the other party an impressive lesson. But Noah's calm demeanor made him hesitate, unsure if Noah had some powerful backing.
"What should we do? I'll pay you a million bucks in protection money. Isn't that enough to cover your guys' medical bills?" Noah asked, puzzled.
"A million bucks? Fuck, you're done for!" Ted trembled with anger, gritting his teeth.
Jack's face darkened completely, "You better watch your words. Even if you have some backing, you think you can insult us like we're nothing?"
"Insult? Absolutely not. I really want to pay the protection money," Noah said with a smile. "Since you're the boss of Orchard Breeze Avenue, a million bucks is too little. I'll give you some respect and pay five million bucks in protection money!"
"Fuck you!" Ted was livid, ready to lunge at Noah. Five million dollars in protection money? Was he taking them for idiots? No one in their right mind would pay that much. And could he even come up with five million dollars? A young guy like him would be lucky to have fifty grand!
"Ted, hold up!" Jack raised his hand to stop Ted. He turned his gaze to Noah. "You wanna insult us by paying five million dollars in protection money? Fine, here's my card. Transfer the money now!"
Jack handed a card to Noah. "If you don't transfer five million dollars to me tonight, I'll break your legs! You swagger!"
Noah stayed calm, taking the card and starting the transfer.
Some customers whispered, "He's not really gonna transfer the money, is he... No way. That's five million dollars. How could someone so young have that kind of money... Yeah, five million dollars is a crazy amount..."
Ted looked at Noah with disdain. "He's just bluffing."
Suddenly, Jack's phone rang. He looked at it and was stunned.
A message reminded: [Your account ending in 3782 has received a transfer of $5,000,000.00 at 21:47. Your new balance is $5,080,0096.00.]
Jack rubbed his eyes, thinking he was seeing things. Five million dollars! He only made about a hundred grand a year. Five million was what he'd earn in thirty years or even longer!
"It's been transferred?" Ted was also stunned, seeing the notification on Jack's phone.
"Jack, could it be a scam?" Ted asked, unsure. He'd never seen that much money in his life.
"It could be a scam. Maybe he used some fake base station to send the message," Jack nodded, "But the bank balance can't be faked!"
He opened his banking app and saw the balance. This time, he was truly shocked, his mouth agape.
Bank balance: $5,080,0096.00!
Jack exclaimed, "It's really five million dollars!"
He was trembling with excitement. With that money, he wouldn't need to stay in the gang, constantly worried about getting caught by the cops. He could buy a mansion, a luxury car, and live happily ever after!
"It's really five million dollars!" Ted was also staring at the balance, swallowing hard, eyes gleaming with greed.
"The five million dollars in protection money has been transferred, right?" Noah said calmly.
"Yes, I got it," Jack nodded, his gaze on Noah becoming complicated. This kid wasn't insulting him. He really transferred five million dollars.
Suddenly, Jack's eyes widened. This young man, transferring five million dollars and remaining so calm afterward. This calmness wasn't an act. He genuinely didn't care about the five million dollars.
If he didn't care about five million dollars, how terrifying was his background and wealth? Someone who could casually transfer five million dollars must have a family fortune of at least a billion dollars!
So how could Jack afford to mess with someone like that?
In that instant, Jack realized that the five million dollars had become a burden. Because Noah dared to pay him, but he didn't dare to take it!
