Chapter 215 Grace is Sick
"Wow, really?" The little boy's eyes lit up. "Scarlett, you're amazing! You actually know him! I heard he donated the money to build our school!"
"Seriously? Wow, Noah is so cool!" Scarlett's big eyes sparkled with excitement as she clapped her hands. She hadn't known about this.
On stage, the principal of Maplewood Primary School and the district's Superintendent Quentin each gave a speech.
The speeches were straightforward. First, they thanked Noah for his generous donation to build Maplewood Primary School. Then, they encouraged the kids to study hard, become valuable members of society, and learn from Noah's spirit of generosity and helping others.
After the speeches, the children clapped enthusiastically.
Next was the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The long red ribbon was raised, and the emcee handed the scissors to Noah and the others.
The ribbon was cut, and Quentin and the others applauded, as did the children below the stage.
Noah looked down and immediately spotted an incredibly cute little girl in the crowd—it was Scarlett.
Quentin said a few more encouraging words, and the groundbreaking ceremony concluded.
Noah stepped down from the stage and smiled at Scarlett. "Scarlett, did you miss me?"
"Of course I did! I missed you so much!" Scarlett beamed, showing two rows of white teeth, and ran towards Noah.
Noah opened his arms and scooped Scarlett up in a big hug. He gently pinched her adorable cheeks.
"How have you been lately? Are you doing well?" Noah asked gently, he had a soft spot for this adorable little girl.
"I'm fine. Even though we're living in temporary housing, it's much better than our old house!" Scarlett nodded, but then her face turned somber. "But my mom is sick. She's been bedridden for days and can't even eat."
"Your mom's illed?" Noah's brow furrowed, "What kind of sickness?"
"I don't know. I asked her, but she wouldn't tell me," Scarlett shook her head. "She said it's just a minor illness and that she'll get better soon."
Noah's eyes flickered. If it were just a minor illness, there'd be no reason not to tell Scarlett.
"Take me to see her," Noah said immediately.
"Okay!" Scarlett nodded obediently.
Holding Scarlett, Noah headed to the temporary housing area.
About ten minutes later, they arrived at Grace's temporary home.
"Mom! Noah is here to see you!" As soon as they reached the door, Scarlett called out, her voice clear.
Noah, followed behind, pushed the door open and entered.
Grace was lying in bed. Hearing the noise, her eyes lit up with surprise. She propped herself up with difficulty, trying to get out of bed, but Noah was already standing in front of her.
He looked at Grace, his expression turning serious.
Compared to the last time he saw her, Grace had lost a lot of weight. Her cheeks were slightly sunken. Her skin was pale and she looked incredibly weak.
"Grace, Scarlett said you're sick. Are you okay? What kind of illness is it?" Noah put Scarlett down and asked with concern.
"It's just a cold, nothing serious. I'll be fine in a few days," Grace waved her hand, forcing a smile.
Noah's brow furrowed tightly. A common cold and fever wouldn't cause her to be so weak.
Grace's face was gaunt, and her arms looked so thin that her bones stuck out.
"Noah, my mom hasn't eaten much for days. She can't keep any food down," Scarlett said, "I don't think it's just a cold."
"Scarlett, don't talk nonsense. I'm fine!" Grace glared at Scarlett, scaring her into silence.
Noah's eyes scanned the room and suddenly spotted a piece of paper under Grace's pillow.
He reached out and pulled it out.
It was a diagnosis report.
"Noah, give that back to me!" Grace's face changed, and she tried to take the report back, but her hand fell weakly.
Noah's eyes fell on the report: [Diagnosis: Early-stage esophageal cancer.]
Noah's face turned grim. "Grace, why didn't you tell me you were this sick?"
Grace finally broke down, sobbing, "What good would it do to tell you? This isn't just any illness; it's cancer. It can't be cured! The doctor said that with current medical technology, even with surgery and chemotherapy, it would only slow the spread of the cancer cells. In two years, I'll still die. Not to mention, the cost of surgery and chemotherapy is hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. Where would I get that amount?"
By the end, Grace was crying even harder.
As a single mother, supporting the family was already tough. Who knew how much pressure she was bearing?
Now, facing this illness, it felt like a death sentence.
The illness was largely due to her constant hard work.
Hearing this, Scarlett's face turned pale, and tears streamed down her cheeks. "Mom, why didn't you tell me?"
Seeing her daughter cry, Grace's heart ached. She wiped Scarlett's tears.
"This illness is almost impossible to cure. After I die, Scarlett will be left alone in this world. She's so young; how can I rest easy?" Grace's voice choked as she looked at Noah. "Noah, can you do me a favor? After I die, can you take care of Scarlett? I'm begging you! I'll be forever grateful!"
"Mom, no! You... you won't die! God... God will bless you!" Scarlett cried in Grace's arms, clinging to her.
"Don't worry, Grace. You'll be fine." Noah's voice was firm.
After speaking, Noah stepped forward and picked Grace up.
She was so light that it felt like holding nothing. Clearly, she had lost a lot of weight from the ill.
"Noah, where are you taking me?" Grace was stunned.
"To the hospital." Noah looked straight ahead, walking out of the house, with Scarlett following closely.
"It's no use, Noah. This is cancer. It can't be cured," Grace said, her eyes filled with despair.
"Trust me, you'll be fine," Noah said, looking down at Grace with determination.
Seeing Noah's resolute eyes, Grace's mind went blank for a moment, as if Noah convinced her.
But then she shook her head. She knew Noah was rich, but this was cancer. Money couldn't cure it.
