Chapter 73 Are You Disappointed?
"I used to mock you all the time, Noah. Are you happy now that you see I’ve been embarrassed?" Evelyn continued.
"What happened, Evelyn? Did Joshua do something to you?" Lisa asked. "Weren't you still in a passionate relationship a few days ago?"
"That Joshua is just a scumbag!"
Evelyn clenched her teeth in anger. "He deceived me! I thought he genuinely loved me, so I slept with him."
"Ah!" Lisa's eyes widened. "Evelyn, you..."
Lisa was a somewhat conservative woman who believed that such matters should only occur after marriage.
Evelyn's eyes turned red as she picked up the whiskey and took a long sip before sighing deeply. "Sigh, I was tricked."
"That night, Joshua told me that if I gave myself to him, he would take me home to meet his father and we could get engaged.
"That way, I would marry into a wealthy family. Lisa, you know that marrying into a wealthy family has always been my dream, so I agreed.
"The next day, Joshua kept his promise and took me to his home to meet Charles.
"But little did I know..."
As Evelyn reached this point, she began crying again.
Lisa quickly comforted her, patting Evelyn on the back.
"But little did I know, Charles flatly refused to let me into the Lee family, saying that the gap between me and the Lee family was too wide. His son had to marry a lady from a wealthy family."
Evelyn's crying grew louder. "What's even more heartbreaking is that Joshua told me that since his father objected, he was powerless and couldn't marry me... sob!"
"Noah, are you happy now that my dream of marrying into a wealthy family has been shattered?" Evelyn lifted her head and looked at Noah.
"What do I care if you marry into a wealthy family or not?" Noah rolled his eyes.
"Hmph, I know what you're thinking. You think I don't know!" Evelyn sneered. "I used to mock you and look down on you. You secretly hated me, but you never showed it!
"If I had married into a wealthy family and made my dream come true, you would definitely be unhappy and jealous. But now that my dream is shattered, I can only imagine how happy you must be!"
Noah shook his head, not bothering to respond to Evelyn.
"Let's go back, Evelyn. It's windy here by the river, and you might catch a cold!" Lisa tried to pull Evelyn up.
"No, let me cry a little longer!" Evelyn struggled. "You don't know how much pain I'm feeling, Lisa. I thought Joshua was a good person, but I didn't expect him to be a scumbag who deceived me with sweet words!"
Evelyn had truly lost this time.
"It's alright, there are plenty of good men out there, Evelyn. If you're patient and don't rush, you’ll definitely find a good man like Noah." Lisa comforted her.
In her mind, Noah was the epitome of a perfect and good man.
"Are you implying that Noah is a good man?"
Evelyn was taken aback. "Lisa, are you comforting me or cursing me? There's no way I would go for someone like Noah even if all the men in the world were gone!"
"Ah," Lisa sighed softly, knowing that Evelyn had a deep bias against Noah.
At that moment, Evelyn's phone suddenly rang.
"Joshua's calling..."
Evelyn was somewhat surprised when she saw the number, and a look of resentment appeared in her eyes. "Why is this scumbag calling me now?"
Despite her anger, Evelyn answered the call.
If she had contact with Joshua, there was still a glimmer of hope for her to marry into a wealthy family.
"Hello, Evelyn, I'm sorry, I was wrong."
As the phone connected, Joshua immediately started apologizing.
"You are not the one at fault, it was me. I was foolish and fell for your sweet talk," Evelyn responded coldly.
"Evelyn, I'm sorry. I just talked to my father, he agreed to our engagement, but we need to wait another month or two, for further consideration," Joshua explained.
"What?!" Evelyn's face changed, thinking that she had misheard. She asked excitedly, "Really? Joshua, are you saying that Charles has agreed to our engagement?"
"Yes! Or I can let my father speak with you."
"Okay, okay, okay!" Evelyn trembled with excitement. "Hello, Sir, I apologize for what I said earlier. I have a lot of faith in you. Joshua and I have been together for two months. If everything goes well, we’ll get engaged."
"Alright, I understand, child. I have high hopes for you too. If things go well with Joshua during these two months, I’ll agree to your engagement," a middle-aged man said over the phone.
"Okay! I understand, Sir! I’ll definitely do my best!" Evelyn repeatedly assured him.
After hanging up the phone, Evelyn wiped away her tears, feeling as if she was in a dream.
Charles had suddenly agreed to the engagement just as she had been heartbroken and wanted to jump into the river.
She felt as if she had gone from hell to heaven in an instant.
"Noah, I have disappointed you, haven't I?" Evelyn looked at Noah and said, "Charles has agreed to this marriage again. If I behave well, I can marry into a wealthy family! And in a few decades, when Charles dies, all the family fortune will be mine!"
"Noah, are you disappointed? Are you feeling down?"
"If you don't want to jump into the river anymore, hurry back. Otherwise, my wife will have to sit here with you. It's windy, and I don't want her to catch a cold," Noah said expressionlessly.
"Hmph, you must be feeling very annoyed inside!" Evelyn snorted softly.
Noah couldn't be bothered to waste any more words on her and pulled Lisa away, saying, "Let's go home."
...
At the same time, in an office in Oceanbridge City.
"Evelyn hung up, Dad" Joshua said, putting down his cellphone.
A middle-aged man in a suit and gold-rimmed glasses with a receding hairline was sitting in front of him. He exuded a certain charisma.
This man was none other than Joshua's father, one of the real estate tycoons in Oceanbridge City, Charles.
On the other side of the couch sat a beer-bellied man with a bandage wrapped around his wrist. Judging by his appearance, he was Max!
"Tsk tsk, you’re quite sensible," Max chuckled. "I took a liking to Evelyn that day at Disney. Once I bring her into my bed in a couple days, our partnership will be sealed, Charles!"
Charles shook his head. "Max, you’re an important man, why are you bothering with someone like Evelyn? It’s not like you can’t get any woman you want.
"I kicked her out already. How dare that seductive and cheap woman aspire to enter our prestigious family? She's simply delusional! The moment I saw her, I knew what was on her mind!
"If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have lowered myself to apologize to a woman."
Max laughed. "It's unavoidable. I took a liking to her that day! But I have to thank Joshua too. Without Joshua, this woman wouldn't be easy to deal with."
"It wasn’t a problem, Max. Evelyn is nothing more than a plaything to me," Joshua hastily added. "Initially, I thought she was a goddess, but after chasing after her and catching her, I realized she was nothing special."
