Chapter 443: Five Thousand Dollars

"Cressida, Mr. Graham is here, get over here now!"

Maddox shouted, "Don't you want the money for those 2 hectares of land anymore?"

"Money for 2 hectares!"

Cressida's eyes lit up as she jogged over and looked Marcus up and down.

This Marcus was a celebrity in town. She often saw him on TV programs.

Plus, Marcus had a great relationship with the mayor. They frequently attended inspections together and discussed economic development.

Many farmlands in Graves Village had been acquired by Marcus to build brick factories.

Cressida never expected that today Marcus would personally come to give her money.

"Mr. Graham!"

Cressida walked up to Marcus, rubbing her hands together with a fawning smile on her face.

"This is the money for acquiring your 2 hectares."

Marcus pulled out his wallet, took out a stack of US dollars, and handed it to Cressida.

Cressida froze, feeling it was a bit little. She took it and counted - her expression changed:

"Mr. Graham, why is it only a thousand dollars?"

According to the acquisition contract at the time, 2 hectares should be five thousand dollars a year.

But now Marcus was giving her only a thousand dollars, which Cressida hadn't expected.

"A thousand dollars is already plenty. You work yourself to death farming all year and only make three or four thousand dollars," Marcus rolled his eyes.

"Now you get a thousand dollars a year for doing nothing. Isn't that good? Yet you complain it's too little - what a troublemaker!"

"But according to the contract, it really says five thousand dollars!"

Cressida forced a smile.

"The contract? Cressida, look carefully at how much it actually says."

Maddox's face was full of mockery as he took out the contract from his briefcase and handed it to Cressida.

Although Cressida wasn't very literate, she could recognize numbers. It read "2 hectares, $1000"!

"How can this be? When we signed the contract, it said five thousand dollars. How did it become one thousand!"

Cressida stared at the contract in shock, dumbfounded.

"Enough nonsense. The contract clearly says in black and white one thousand dollars, so it's one thousand dollars!" Maddox said impatiently:

"Take the money and get lost. If you don't want to give the land to Mr. Graham, then give the money back!"

Cressida shook her head bitterly. Those 2 hectares were already piled with bricks, the brick factory foundation was laid - she definitely couldn't farm this year.

If she returned the thousand dollars, she wouldn't earn a penny this year!

"Aren't you just bullying people?"

Cressida was so upset tears nearly fell:

"The original contract clearly said five thousand dollars. How did it suddenly become one thousand!"

"Bullying people? So what if I bully you!"

Maddox said directly.

"I forged this contract, but if I say it's real, then it's real!"

"According to the contract, you should get one thousand dollars! If you don't like it, go sue Mr. Graham!"

"Your son didn't know his place and dared to mess with me! Now, either take the money and get lost, or give me back the money and take back your 2 hectares!"

"You're really going too far!"

Cressida couldn't hold back - tears streamed down. Sue Marcus? Where could she sue?

Marcus was a powerful figure in town. The mayor had a great relationship with him, and Marcus knew people in every government office. There was no way to sue!

She could only swallow her anger!

"Maddox, you're being way too overbearing!"

Hugo, who had been listening nearby, had anger burning in his eyes:

"You got beaten at my place yesterday, so today you brought your backer to target the Graves family!"

"Sorry, but that's just how overbearing I am! If you can, find yourself a backer too!" Maddox said smugly:

"Of course, I can give your family five thousand dollars! But only if you give me that one million dollars! After all, that's money Lila deserves."

"You..."

Hugo clenched his fists but didn't know how to respond.

This was too hard!

With Marcus standing there, without saying a word, Hugo already felt enormous pressure.

In front of Marcus, he was just an ant. This man could deal with him with just a lift of his finger.

The gap in their status was just too big.

One was a famous big boss in town, the other a poor village boy.

Just then, Noah got out of the car.

"Noah, this is all your fault! If you hadn't offended Maddox, would today have happened? Would Maddox have brought Mr. Graham to our door?"

Cressida glared viciously at Noah:

"Getting North killed wasn't enough - you had to make enemies for the Graves family too. Now look, 2 hectares for one thousand dollars, and I have nowhere to complain!"

"I'll compensate you for the money - ten times, a hundred times, no problem."

Noah smiled slightly at Cressida, then turned his gaze to Maddox, extremely cold:

"Looks like yesterday's lesson wasn't enough for you."

As he said this, the three men from Respect Noah Pavilion stepped forward, looking coldly at Maddox, ready to act at any moment.

Seeing these three, Maddox trembled all over and quickly hid behind Marcus.

"Marcus, it was this guy's bodyguards who beat up Maddox's men yesterday. Help me teach him a lesson!"

Lila stroked Marcus's chest, speaking sweetly.

"Bodyguards? Who doesn't have bodyguards?"

Marcus sneered, not taking Noah and his men seriously at all.

He raised his hand, and the four bodyguards he'd brought stepped forward.

"Beat them up!"

Marcus said directly.

"Yes, boss!"

The four bodyguards, upon receiving orders, immediately stepped forward and charged at the three men from Respect Noah Pavilion.

The three from Respect Noah Pavilion showed no fear and also charged forward.

Immediately, the sounds of fists and feet colliding rang out.

Marcus looked relaxed, lighting a cigarette, not worried at all.

These four bodyguards were hired with annual salaries of tens of thousands of dollars. They were former military, trained in martial arts and kickboxing.

Four of them could handle forty opponents, no problem.

Marcus naturally didn't take the other side's three bodyguards seriously.

In the blink of an eye, they'd exchanged dozens of moves, but still no winner emerged.

Noah's eyes narrowed slightly. These three were top fighters from Respect Noah Pavilion, yet after nearly a minute, they still hadn't defeated their opponents.

It seemed Marcus's four bodyguards were quite skilled - they'd met their match.

Marcus's expression turned to shock. In his imagination, the other three would be defeated within twenty seconds.

But he hadn't expected them to fight evenly.

By now, two of the three from Respect Noah Pavilion were injured - one hit in the chest, one with a dislocated shoulder.

The four bodyguards weren't doing well either - one had a swollen face, another had been kicked in the knee.

"Damn it, what have I been teaching you! When you fight, fight to kill, use any means necessary!"

Marcus couldn't watch anymore and cursed out loud.

Seeing Marcus angry, the four bodyguards all shuddered, cold gleams appearing in their eyes.

One of them reached to his waist with his right hand.

A sharp dagger was drawn, reflecting cold light, stabbing directly toward the abdomen of the Respect Noah Pavilion member in front of him!
