Chapter 123 Extorting 2 Million Dollars
Bella snorted and said, "We're the same."
Sterling grinned and ruffled her hair. "Let's head home."
Even though their tender moments were rare, when they did get along, it made Bella feel at ease.
If she and Sterling weren't meant for romantic love, then familial love would do just fine. After all, they'd been living together for over a decade, and maybe they already had that family bond.
No doubt, Sterling was Bella's only family in this world. He'd seen her through childhood, her teenage years, and now as an adult.
Sterling had seen every side of Bella, so how could this not be familial love? If Sterling was willing to get along peacefully with her, Bella thought she would be very happy.
Bella was ready to forget the pains of her childhood. After what happened with Mira yesterday, Bella gave in to Sterling.
She was willing to let go of the past, no longer obsessed with the torment Sterling had inflicted on her. Let those painful memories stay in the past.
On the other side, Anna had been worried about Bella suddenly hanging up on her yesterday, so she planned to visit Bella after work today.
Anna checked the time, and as soon as it hit 5 PM, she quickly packed up her things and got ready to leave.
Anna had been working overtime a lot lately. So today, she wanted to take the chance to sneak out.
But just as Anna reached the elevator, she felt someone grab her collar from behind. She turned around to see it was Colin.
She gave an awkward smile and said, "Mr. Rivera, are you off work too?"
Colin chuckled. "You're not very enthusiastic about work, but you sure run fast when it's time to leave. Ready to sneak off again?"
Anna straightened up and said, "Mr. Rivera, what do you mean by 'sneak off'? I'm just getting off work on time, okay? Look, everyone has been working so hard with all the overtime. Can I apply to leave a bit early today?"
Colin pressed the elevator button. "Are you going to your part-time job again?"
Anna shook her head. Seeing Colin enter the elevator, she stood outside and said, "No, I'm going to see Bella."
Colin saw Anna still standing outside and said, "Not coming in?"
Anna's face lit up with joy, and she quickly entered the elevator. "Mr. Rivera, you're such a good person. I promised to work hard for you, and I will definitely keep my word. But today, I really have something important. I want to check on Bella."
Colin lazily nodded without saying a word. He caught a glimpse of Anna's reflection in the elevator walls and saw her barely concealed joy at being able to see Bella.
Colin suddenly remembered seeing Anna by the river a few days ago. At that time, Anna's eyes were red from crying, and there were clear finger marks on her face.
Colin felt his heart tighten and asked, "What happened to you?"
Anna just shook her head without speaking. Seeing her legs numb from squatting, he bent down and picked her up.
A fleeting look of surprise crossed Anna's face. She really needed someone to comfort her. So he put Anna in the car and fastened her seatbelt.
Colin wanted to take her home, but Anna said, "I don't want to go home right now."
Colin had no choice but to sit quietly in the car with Anna. The redness and swelling on her face clearly indicated she had been hit. When he asked what happened, she only said she had a fight with her mom.
Colin didn't press for more details. He just sat there quietly with Anna. The sadness she felt seemed palpable to Colin.
Now, seeing Anna cheerful again, he felt relieved. The sight of Anna crying had placed an emotional weight on his chest.
But the cheerful and lively Anna made Colin happy. He suddenly smiled.
Anna tilted her head and looked at Colin, saying, "Mr. Rivera, what's so funny?"
Colin said, "Nothing, just suddenly remembered someone owes me 2 million dollars."
Anna was surprised and said, "Someone owes you 2 million dollars, and you can still laugh? Shouldn't you be asking for the money?"
Anna looked at Colin, thinking he was really carefree.
Colin looked at Anna lazily and said, "Yeah, this person owes me 2 million dollars. Should I ask her for it?"
Anna said, "Of course. It's 2 million dollars."
Colin nodded and said, "Alright, I'll go ask for it tomorrow."
Colin remembered that day when he went to see Sterling. After they finished talking, Sterling suddenly threw a bill in front of him. When he picked it up, it was a 2 million dollar transfer.
Colin frowned and said, "Why are you showing me this? Do I owe you money?"
Sterling said expressionlessly, "Look at who the transfer is to."
Colin picked it up and saw it was to Anna's account.
Sterling said emotionlessly, "Give me back the 2 million dollars."
Colin laughed and said, "What does this mean? Why should I give you money?"
Sterling indicated for Colin to look closely at the bill.
Bella had never made such a large transfer before, so when the bank transfer email came, Sterling was curious and immediately had someone check who Bella had transferred the money to.
Then he found out about Anna's blind date. He was speechless, but Bella had already transferred the money to Anna to solve her problem.
And Sterling was no philanthropist. He might not be able to go after Anna for the debt, but he could certainly go after Anna's boss, Colin.
Besides, Colin would probably be happy to be Anna's creditor.
Colin looked closely at the bill again. It was indeed transferred from Sterling's account to Anna's account.
Colin immediately frowned and said, "Why did you give Anna 2 million dollars?"
Sterling coldly laughed and said, "Do you think I gave it to her?"
Colin thought for a moment and realized it must have been Bella who transferred the money to Anna.
Colin thought for a moment and asked, "Why did Bella transfer money to Anna? And 2 million dollars at that."
Sterling retorted, "Can't you find out for yourself? Anyway, now you owe me 2 million dollars."
Sterling had a look that said, "If you don't pay up, you won't leave today."
Colin protested, "Anna owes you money, why are you coming to me?"
Sterling replied with a steely gaze. "Fine, I'll have the debt collectors go after Anna tomorrow."
Grinding his teeth, Colin conceded, "Fine, I'll transfer it to you, okay?"
Colin then transferred 2 million dollars to Sterling. And so, Anna's creditor changed from Sterling to Colin.
After receiving the money, Sterling kicked Colin out of the company.
